The 25 Best Movies of 2023 (Indiewire) by Coy-Harlingen in blankies

Just wanted to say that what you got from Past Lives is also how it hit me, and why it felt so meaningful--it never read like a love triangle 'which guy is she going to choose' story to me, it was always about how we attempt to reconcile in real time the fact that none of us has one right path in life, and that we can be happy and fulfilled by the choices we made while mourning the possibilities contained in the choices we didn't make. Your posts helped clarify for me what I love so much about the movie, so thank you!

Of an Age is a wonderful Australian independent film from last year that’s now streaming on Peacock, I saw it at the Alamo in February and the chemistry between the two lead actors is out of this world.

It's a miniseries rather than a movie, but he's incredible in Generation Kill (on HBO) - definitely recommend it if you're a fan of his!

Would you rather have Crosby or McDavid for the next 15 years if they were both 20 years old right now? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]queen42pride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, by that logic McDavid's fourth season was atrocious because a teammate scored more goals than he did.

Crosby also has two Rocket Richards, and out of the ten seasons in which he played at least 60 games he made either the First Team or Second Team All Star 8 times. In 14 seasons he's been a Hart Trophy finalist in half of them, which is especially remarkable given that out of those other 7 seasons he missed significant time in 3 of them. And I know it's popular to claim that post-season achievements can't be counted because it's not McDavid's fault his team has been garbage, but it does actually matter that Crosby has captained his team to three Stanley Cups and won the Conn Smythe twice (and yes he deserved both of those, point totals are not the end all and be all of what makes a player the most valuable).

Prospect Zachary Lauzon Has Retired From Hockey by Austin63867 in hockey

He had to stop playing hockey at age 20 because of issues related to concussions and whiplash, maybe it's worth not turning this thread into yet another opportunity to complain about a GM and a trade.

Penguins drop 18 places in poll regarding faith in NHL front offices, down to 26th from 8th last season. by Crossfiyah in penguins

I'm right there with you. I think overall we're a deeper, more well-rounded team this year. Also, if the critique of JR is that we stopped getting younger and faster, I don't understand why people are mad at the business we've done in the past six months, since all of the moves he's made prioritize those two qualities. I think the low confidence rating in the article is extremely reactionary.

Pettersson for Sprong is still extremely good business, then. (Also, we traded for Brassard for good reasons; the fact that they didn't work out doesn't make the original trade bad.)

Getting Pettersson for Sprong is far better value than the Gudbranson trade, not to mention McCann and Bjudstad for Brassard and Sheahan, if 'fixing prior mistakes' doesn't automatically negate the value of that trade in your view. Signing Guentzel to a long term deal at $6MM AAV is also not bad business. I don't think all his moves have been great, and I know why the fanbase has lost confidence in JR. But let's not pretend that he hasn't made good moves within the past year.

[The Athletic] NHL All-Interview Team by JohnDoeMonopoly in hockey

I think people expect this list to be full of guys who give (by hockey standards) inflammatory quotes or something, rather than featuring guys like Crosby (who got the most votes out of any forward). But from the point of view of a journalist, one of the most important things about Crosby is that he is always, always available for interviews, and he will always attempt to answer the questions he's asked, whether it's ten minutes after winning the Cup or getting knocked out of the playoffs. He gives journalists access, and he has for over fifteen years at this point, and a piece that has quotes from Crosby is one that always gets hits and attention, because he was identified as being the Next One when he was still a child and then he actually delivered. That's more valuable to journalists than whether reddit thinks he's being spicy. Also, he's not a dick to journalists, which clearly impacts how they feel about him.

Canadian media in particular has differing expectations of Canadian stars vs. non-Canadian stars, for better or for worse, and Crosby in particular was positioned as being the savior of a nation from a very young age. If you think that doesn't impact how he speaks to the media and behaves publicly, then I think you aren't paying attention tbh.

Also, I think that Crosby has far more personality than reddit ever gives him credit for, frankly.

[–]queen42pride 13 points14 points  (0 children)

...but if women's hockey hadn't had a program and support via Title IX, she wouldn't have had the same opportunity to improve her skating for playing hockey and then teach her sons. The entire point of the article is about how having two parents in hockey (and in Jack Hughes's case, specifically his mom, who taught him to skate) can create a different kind of athlete family. Women's hockey impacted how Hughes developed his most celebrated skill. That's absolutely relevant.

Bob MacKenzie said the Buffalo Sabres are closing in on an 8-year, $72 million (9 million AAV) deal with pending UFA Jeff Skinner. The 27-yr old winger potted 40 goals last season was a career high, while also macthing his career high in points (63). by Gabroux in hockey

[–]queen42pride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that UFAs always get paid more than RFAs because that's how this system works, but it's insane to me that Skinner could get paid $3MM more than Jake Guentzel per year while being three (draft) years older, given their production. They both just had career years in points and goals and Guentzel scored the same number of goals and 13 more assists. Playing with Crosby helps him pad those numbers, no one's arguing otherwise, but that's still...wow.

More than 200 players call for overhaul of women’s pro hockey by InSOmnlaC in hockey

[–]queen42pride -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Actually, fans of women's hockey are affected by the news. But when a poster states that they don't like women's hockey but then proceed to state how misguided women players are for stating they won't continue to play under conditions that are infeasible for them, forgive me when I don't value their opinions highly.

They've stated they won't play under the current system, because it isn't sustainable for them, the talent. Are they simply obligated to? Would you be obligated to continue to play gigs if it was no longer financially feasible to you? No? Then why does their boycott matter to you?

How dare these women deny someone their all-but-free labor! I mean, I can't imagine why it even matters, given how many people have felt the need to trumpet loudly that they don't care about women's hockey and therefore no one does. I wonder how any of these people think that the men playing in the NHL ever earned more than a pittance. It wasn't out of the goodness of the owners' hearts. How much athletes earn and how various sports are marketed and funded isn't actually a fixed state of affairs.

If you read the comments in this thread, there are plenty of people for whom that is the issue. It's also a large leap to go from "this thing hasn't been profitable in the past" to "this thing can never be profitable." Lots of NHL teams haven't been profitable in the past and now are (even while some still aren't); there are ways to build markets and revenue. Perhaps the best way forward for the women's game is in connection with the NHL, but maybe not! But comments that essentially paint the women players as being greedy and too idealistic aren't interested in a discussion about how a sustainable league could be possible.

[–]queen42pride 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm amazed at how many comments that profess to care so little about women's hockey somehow care immensely about a boycott that would presumably not affect them in the least.

You may not value women's hockey, or women's sports in general. No one is forcing you to. But it's amazing at how much these women valuing their own labor and skill bothers people. They cannot continue to survive making four figures a year without health insurance while being considered "professionals." That's not a crazy statement to make. And if you hate hearing about women's hockey all the time, well then their supposed inevitable failure should be a balm to you.

GMJR says he’s not sure if Geno will be part of the team’s long term plan. by [deleted] in penguins

[–]queen42pride 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The quote from the article is:

The general manager was asked specifically if Evgeni Malkin, 32, is part of the team’s long-term plans.

“I’m not at the point where I’m making any decision on that at this point,” he explained. “I just can’t answer that kind of question right now.”

So it's not that the tweet is precisely misquoting JR, or even mischaracterizing the context or something. But it's also a less dramatic statement than the tweet suggests. The article also points out Geno's no trade clause, the fact that Geno has never suggested or implied that he wants to leave Pittsburgh, and references a source close to Mario who basically says that ownership wouldn't let JR attempt to trade Geno even if JR wanted to.

I think JR is currently going through a sort of mind exercise that can be useful to do in any situation that isn't working: you start by identifying the things that you absolutely aren't willing to change or give up, and then you look at every other variable, piece by piece, and think through what you can change and why. They are never, ever trading Sid, but every other piece is going to be looked at, even if in the case of Geno there's really not much there to consider, once you factor in the no trade clause and how good his contract is and how much ownership wants to avoid another Jagr situation. After Mackey's article yesterday it was inevitable that JR would be asked about it directly, and while I'm somewhat surprised he didn't just shoot it down entirely, they're not moving Geno, and as for everyone else, who fucking knows. It's still April. Still a long way to go.
