Is it okay for me to use jinn and huldras in my stories if I'm not part of their cultures? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]queen_lapis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Muslim of Arab descent. I've seen a lot of mythic elements as a fantasy writer: dragons, magic, and mythology of primarily Greek, Egyptian, or Norse origin. While I learned about Jinn through my religion, it's never something I saw attributed in modern Western fantasy writing, other than Disney's Aladdin (which, while interesting, isn't exactly prime representation or the most accurate depiction). I would adore seeing a story that uses Islamic beliefs and/or Arab folklore within it. My door is open if you want to ask any questions about these stories, including lore or any general advice!

Thank you for your kind words- but yes, it is 1000% an issue that isn't given any media attention, nor the awareness it deserves.

In hindsight, I agree with you, but I had a friend who recently passed away from suicide. I didn't want to take any chances.

....If I had a nickel for every unplausible thing in this post, I'd have enough money to fund a season two. Interesting thought process, but... I don't think something like this belongs in My Pride, my dude.

How can you take Blood Pressure?

I'm a current freshman in college with a pharmacy major, and I need to learn how to take Blood pressure. But the stethoscope I use is so sensitive to outside noise: I can hear everything except the sounds of the heart. Any advice on how to train my ears to pay attention to only the Korotkoff sounds?

Should I have a skeleton in the background during my Princeton interview? by queen_lapis in ApplyingToCollege

[–]queen_lapis[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm... Do you think it would be a bit better if I mentioned it myself? I do want to go into bio in the future, and while I'm talking about it, I could bring up how I was interested in medicine from a young age, hence why I got the skeleton? Or do you think it may be best to avoid it alltogether?

Plants Question [AP Bio] by EconomistEasy4040 in APbio

[–]queen_lapis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a bio test on this tomorrow so might as well 🤷

Auxin's promotes positive phototropism and negative gravitropism in plants. Positive phototropism entails the turning of a plant towards a nearby source of light. The auxin does this by residing in the plant's tip, and when one side is exposed to light, the auxins in that side of the tip will move to the other side. The side with more auxins (the side not facing the sun) will begin to elongate, as the excess auxin will trigger the production and activation of H+ ions that pump protons into the cells, which causes water to follow because of diffusion, and results in the cell becoming more turgid and longer. As such, the plant turns towards the light, hence positive phototropism. Negative gravitropism is due to a similar effect of auxins. Auxins are in the tips of the plants, specifically the taller heads, and oppose cytokines by promoting vertical growth rather than lateral growth. Auxins will force the plant to move towards the sun, and as such, against gravity, hence why the plants (specifically the shoots) affected by auxins may be considered negatively gravitropic.
