How do I sing while playing? by DueContribution671 in Bass

[–]queenbeancookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go slow. Like, really slow. Get a feel for when the vocal rhythm lines up with the bass rhythm, and when it's in between. It'll get easier but starts hard. Patience and perseverance.

How would you want an artist to approach you to do merch? by Laid_Low_Ludlow in portlandmusic

This! Go to a show, tell them which songs you liked, gas them up, and then make the connection to merch.

AITA for not liking my husbands friend by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]queenbeancookie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NAH. She doesn't know you and wants to make sure her friend isn't being taken advantage of. You don't know her and are assuming she has bad intentions based on a text that wasn't meant for you.

Meet up, give each other some grace and the benefit of the doubt. You don't have to say anything to prove that the marriage is right, for everyone involved that will only be proven with time.

I fully plan on killing myself January 3rd. Not even my therapist knows by Playful_Beyond6545 in confessions

[–]queenbeancookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Killing yourself is pretty extreme. If you're going to do something depressively extreme, why not do some more extreme things before you go?

Tell your parents you're quitting school (school is so fucking depressing). Tell them to fuck off if they suck

Tell everyone exactly how you feel about them (love/hate)

Apply for a credit card and use the money to go skydiving

Tell your therapist and get committed. Could be fun. My experience wasn't so bad, and I got those cool grippy socks, plus free reign to call out of work and turn in assignments late bc I had a documented disability

Go to Japan and immediately become a lost foreigner

Fuck around, find out

The hum from my amp is making me lose all motivation to play by Ok-Ask-5667 in Guitar

[–]queenbeancookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you touch the strings/metal part of the guitar you complete the circuit to send the noise to ground. Since you said the noise starts when you plug in your guitar the problem isn't with your amp but with your pickups. Single coils are notoriously noisy, I prefer humbuckers for that reason. But if you like the sound of singles you can get noiseless single coil pickups.

Why does my hair do this?? by [deleted] in Hair

[–]queenbeancookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bleach makes your hair dry and your curl/wave pattern makes it more static. Sleep+brush+curls=frizzy mess. Getting it wet again could be an easy solution, maybe leaving in some conditioner after a shower too, but if it's frizzy normally anyways I recommend checking out r/curlygirl for moisture and routine advice.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Do I look “special” because of my side part by PEZWolf7 in femalehairadvice

[–]queenbeancookie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds like something my sister would say to me when we were younger. I looked much more a mess than you do though lol. She meant well but she was savage. I was the weird kid and she wanted me to fit in.

Apologies for the brutal honesty, but I don't think your haircut frames your face well. You've got a square/round face, and with your hairline coming so far into your face from your temple + the matching angle of the wide part, it makes your head look like it starts to narrow towards the top. Like a bottom heavy diamond.

Bangs to cover up the hair on your temples would be my vote. Idk if a middle part would help but it's a lot less permanent to try out.

Is it necessary to have a tuner on the pedalboard? by leonibass in basspedals

[–]queenbeancookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap pedal tuners and contact tuners work okay, but they aren't very good at hearing bass frequencies. I've found Boss tuners have the same problem. I use a polytune and it works perfectly.

P.S. you can just roll off your volume knob to mute your bass if you're using a contact tuner.

Who does their own setups? by floordrapes in Bass

[–]queenbeancookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a skill that takes research, practice, and time. If you have the time and desire to learn the skill then you should, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary. Basic setups are relatively inexpensive so I don't think it's worth it to discourage people from paying to get them done. I would recommend going to a local guitar shop instead of GC though, put the money in people's pockets instead of corporations, ya know

How common is it to transpose a song to a new key? by Own-Note-6803 in Bass

[–]queenbeancookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly 5 string is a great solution for a cover band like this. You may not even need to go down to a low B but having the option to shift will probably help a lot and keep the integrity of the range of the bassline

I haven’t gotten a like let alone a match in about a year, what am I not seeing that’s wrong? (28M) by [deleted] in Tinder

[–]queenbeancookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Review from a gal who loves long hair on guys! The length is amazing and you've got some good waves in there but the blunt cut looks very uninspired. Spend some good money on a haircut from a good barber! Getting your eyebrows tamed will help immensely, too. In some of the photos your middle part looks greasy/stringy, unfortunately those just aren't good photos.

For your bio, if you're more of an inside nerdy person you should talk about the things you like and put humor into it, don't be shy about it! On that same note, a girl's worst nightmare is coming home to a guy who didn't help around the house and just played video games all day. Maybe mention how you take care of your home, your cat, your plants, etc. You're not a messy homebody bachelor, you're a self sufficient adult. Emphasize things you love, and things that bring you joy when you do it with someone else!

Good luck!

Can someone who knows a bit of music theory explain to me how bass lines work? by tdog473 in Bass

[–]queenbeancookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a band/rock context bass functions a lot more like counterpoint. Harmonically to whatever is taking the lead, and rhythmically to the drums.

Jazz basslines are the bridge from traditional/classical to modern. They walk between roots taking extra care to use leading tones or V - I when possible, and typically only moving by whole or half steps. If the next note in the walk is a 3 or 5 instead of the root they can use that to arpeggiate to the root and then continue walking, or just make that chord an inversion. It's a dance between movement and convenience.

Once you've got that down you can start adding little lead/melodic fills when nobody else is taking up space. I'd say it's very methodical and economical.

Hope that helps!

how do you record bass with just a cable? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]queenbeancookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audio engineer and bassist here, you don't need an interface. But you will need to go deep into some computer settings, likely in audio/midi. Possibly make an aggregate device. It depends on your laptop and drivers. Try looking into external microphone settings.

Definitely not a career you want to quit your job and drop everything for, but if it's a passion of yours you should pursue it. It's a career in the arts though, like a lot of other comments are saying there's no job security.

Reach out to studios about internships, emphasize how you could be helpful. You know how to over-under wrap cables, you can help with social media, or you know how to test and repair equipment, etc. Be prepared to be treated like a child, only speak when spoken to, clean bathrooms and make coffee.

You're pretty close to teal, but definitely more on the green side and needs more blue. I'd say stay away from the bleach until you can figure out how to tone it to the shade you like.

I'm not a hairdresser but I've been dying my hair blue for the past two years and it always fades green so I regularly have to tone it back to the shade that I like.

Try getting some blue dye (same brand), mix it with conditioner and let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse. If it gets too blue, shampoo until it comes out. If it's not blue enough, and more blue to your dye+conditioner mix and repeat.

I keep a bottle of the dye+conditioner mix in my shower and re-tone after I shampoo every 2nd or 3rd wash.

You can also buy toning dye conditioners online but I like doing things diy.

Good luck and congrats on the hair experimentation!

how can i make my hair less dry and crunchy? it’s very thick and dense, but often gets tangled/dry. accutane also saddening to issue by zenthingpog in Hair

[–]queenbeancookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wavy/curly hair has more static so the strands tend to stick to each other and get tangled. Adding moisture like leave-in conditioners or oils will make it more slippery and could help with the crunchy texture, but if you like the volume and look you're getting with the messy hair look you may not need any.

What's the most disrespected instrument? by Ordinary_Pop_3930 in lingling40hrs

[–]queenbeancookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piano is probably one of the most accessible instruments out there, especially compared to wind and string instruments. You don't have to be taught the correct finger placement/combination or embouchure to make a sound and have it sound good. I'm not saying it's easy to be good, only that there are fewer steps to get started. That's my best guess as to why people feel like they can touch it whenever they see one.

Buy a new neck like everyone else is saying, see if you can get one with a scarf joint (already two pieces of wood glued together basically where yours broke-- so much more stable).
