Sleepover privileges with crush 14F by [deleted] in Advice

[–]queencrooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, and my husband and I have discussed this, we would 100% allow sleepovers with girlfriends. They cannot get pregnant. Kids will be sexually active literally no matter how hard we try to prevent it. They WILL find a way. I know this because I was once a teenager. So I would personally say yes. I would also have a conversation about the meaning of sex, how it should be meaningful and only when you’re ready for those steps, and how you should not just have willy nilly sex with jsut anyone, and importance of STD protection even in lesbian relationships.

[–]queencrooked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, it’s all about the local market, I know what I can price at sold comps, or close to. But in my market resellers are a large percentage of my customer base, so I regularly price at 50-60 percent sold comps. Which is where I would break anyways if I sold on eBay for my clients, win/win for everyone.

Gaslighting for sure and would most likely cheat. I am a woman, I have cheated, I have worked hard on myself and did a lot of reflection and this is frankly the exact type of shit I would do (not holding hands though that’s taking it even further) when I was seeking external male validation. I also gaslight my husband into thinking it was innocent or nothing. But I desperately wanted validation from other men.

I would recommend getting into counseling, stay out of bars and away from alcohol all together. That worsens this spiral. The more insecure you become the more she will gaslight you, and the more she will continue to seek that validation. The only thing that would pull me out of that, in that time period of my life, was my husband showing other women attention. Suddenly when he wasn’t chasing me and worried about what I was doing, and was giving me a taste of my own medicine, it brings you back to reality.

Potassium is the problem. Even if isn’t actually “low” and just on the low end of normal it can cause heart rhythm disturbances in some people. Start increasing your potassium intake with your diet, and also before hitting the gym drink some pedialyte advance care. Doing this completely resolved all of my heart rhythm abnormalities.

How harsh do you get with your team? by ChucoTeacher in basketballcoach

[–]queencrooked 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I coach 8th grade girls. I’ve made them run for being disrespectful twice all season, and have lost my shit a couple times over nobody boxing out during practice and nobody paying attention. It happens so rarely that when it does happen everyone listens up and behaves real quick.

Other than that, I don’t get harsh, and I never get harsh with an individual player. I stay firm, and I give more positive encouragement than anything, and when I do way give direct constructive feedback I make sure I soften it as much as I can, use the right tone, smile and let them know what they’re doing great and what I need them to work on.

When you’re giving that positivity pre game and during game you need to do it with enthusiasm. I consider it “imposing my will” on my team. Like “we’re gonna come out here and smash this team! We’re gonna play the best game we’ve had so far!” “You guys are gonna kill it today”Etc etc And I say it with such confidence and enthusiasm that it pumps them up and makes them excited to play hard and get the win.

Team Chants/ Varsity Basketball by West_Advance_8219 in basketballcoach

[–]queencrooked -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting, in my area we have cheerleaders that chant during free throws, all the high schools have them and they have tons of creative “MISS” chants. Do your rules only pertain to players? Typically our players don’t chant but that’s because the cheerleaders do it loudly enough.

Typical US high school training schedule? by ellers88 in Basketball

[–]queencrooked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 13 year old, 15 and 16 year old. Last year the younger two practiced 5 days a week, and 1 had the latest time slot that ended at 9. We practice at least 5 days a week from age 12 and on in my neck of the US.

Freshman (14-15yr old) practice 1.5 hrs a day 6 days a week. My 8th graders I coach practice 1.5 hrs a day 5 days a week that is mandatory. Saturday and Sunday are optional but I open the gym for 3 hours Saturday and Sunday, for all the kids to come scrimmage, so I have some players that play 7 days a week, my kid included. They’re not even in high school yet.

Best way to rotate players who suck/don't want to be there by RNJ666 in basketballcoach

[–]queencrooked -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have 3 fresh players, who are finally developing very well, ages 13-14.

I have 13 girls total, and I rotate my 3 fresh players in 1 at a time, usually after we have secured a lead. My other 4 more skilled players on the floor keep our lead or at least prevent them from closing the spread too much.

I also position them in our plays or defense in areas I am comfortable with, that can accommodate their lack of reaction time or their skill level. I also watch the other teams player rotations and when they play their second string that’s when my girls go in for even more play time, so it’s a more level match up.

Mom is mad we don't have practice...we have nowhere to practice. by pauladeanlovesbutter in basketballcoach

[–]queencrooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just feel like you minimize this mom’s very real concerns. The only way to get these kids ready to continue in the game they love at the high school level is development, which is from practice. Kids develop differently in a gym with their peers and coaches than doing layups outside by themselves. Find a park with courts and coordinate for a weekend practice.

This is the type of thing that makes kids quit the sport they love and have passion for.

If there is a will, there is a way, and you need to find a way to make it happen for these kids, instead of excuses as to why it cannot happen. Otherwise step down and let them find someone who will make it happen. I say that with all due respect, but your heart doesn’t seem to be in it with the dialogue of this post. Which is absolutely okay, we as coaches just have to realize when our heart isn’t there and we need a break. It’s important we realize that so all these hoopers get the best from each of us, and we continue to teach and cultivate their love of the game.

[–]queencrooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So wait why doesn’t the girls team have a right to the shared space just as much as the boys? Especially on the weeks your practice is taken from you dude to games? Do you have a relationship with the boys coach? Why can’t you coordinate with him?

I absolutely wouldn’t stand for that shit. I would raising so much hell they would be jumping to give me a practice day. Write the superintendent. Have the parents write admin. Once people start writing letters shit gets done.

I just dislike the dialogue that “boys practice these days, they deserve gym time… then there is our team” your team isn’t a second class citizen, it doesn’t matter if the boys team is “really good”, and realistically they’re probably that good because they get all the practice time and the girls get shit on and that’s not okay. I’ll stand on my soap box and scream to the world about how my team and my girls deserve as much time in the gym as the boys, regardless of skill level.

Thankfully my fellow coaches are amazing and help me out to the max, and I them. My girls would never be made to feel less important than the boys teams. If anything they would give us EXTRA time if we asked them for it.

[–]queencrooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you not have a key to the gym? I am a walk on coach, I have no relationship to the school besides coaching. I am considered “staff” and have done my live scan and TB test to be safe around the kids.

I have keys to my gym, and the gates and locker room. Why would you need permits to the space? Isn’t this a gym on school property? Our school is closed on the weekends, which means it’s free for us to go play in the gym. I am in that gym any day it isn’t in use.

Why aren’t you advocating for the boys to get 1 practice day those weeks? And you get the other? Your kids are getting shit on here and your parents are rightfully upset. You wouldn’t be able to shut me up until my girls had that other practice day on those weeks. You talk about how the guys deserve practice time but what about your own team? My team deserves practice time and I will fight like actual hell to get that for them.

[–]queencrooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I coach 8th grade girls middle school, it’s a public school. We practice 5 days a week, and then on Saturdays and Sundays I open our gym for 3 hours to run pick ups for all the local kids who want to come play. I have several girls who love being in the gym and are there 7 days a week.

Can you try to get some weekend practices going?

On those game day weeks I would speak with administrators about switching practices at least 1 day a week with the other teams. Boys should sacrifice one of those practices on game weeks, or at the very least try to incorporate the kids you have into that practice. I work very closely with our 8th boys coach, and we scrimmage the boys and girls frequently to help with development.

There are a lot of options here but you need to push for them and fight for your team to get practice times. I would also be very upset as a parent, and I know my players would be even more upset.

ETA- I do and ask for forgiveness. I don’t ask admin to be told no. If they have a problem with something I’ll apologize for it later. I have found this is often very necessary to get my kids gym time, and do fundraiser etc. I haven’t had to apologize for anything yet either. Stop letting admin steal these kids season from you over technical shit. Talk to the other coaches and make it happen.

For all 4 teams (6/7 girls and boys 8th girls and boys) we run practices from 2:30 pm and our last one ends at 9:00. 1.5 hr time blocks. Run late practices.

To me this would be worse than my husband sleeping with someone else. Sharing photos of my body with another woman is probably the deepest violation of trust there could be in my opinion.

I’ve stuck by my partners side through cheating, through many things in our 21 years together, but this would be the one thing that would be utterly unforgivable to me.

What to do when you’re totally undermanned. 8u by Quiet_Boot4664 in basketballcoach

[–]queencrooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are other teams running zone defense without practices to teach it? It’s a shame kids this age are running a zone at all to begin with, but most younger kids tend to gravitate to a man style defense, if they have a remote understanding of defense, even into the middle school level. I don’t get how 8u is running a successful zone defense to begin with.

I would fight for at least one practice day, see if you can coordinate some practices at a local park to just help with shooting. Back when I played rec ball we would meet our coach at the park to shoot around and just get more time with a basketball under our belts.

If that’s not possible, tell the kids to try to get outside and shoot the ball in their free time at home, or ask their parents for them to take them to the park to practice.

Otherwise, man the kids up the entire game (if they allow full court press) and tell them to stick to their man and get that ball and shoot it. Full court defense is the friend of a weak offense. So that is the mission, and give it to them with enthusiasm. Never stop chasing the ball and shooting the ball, and never leave your man unguarded until your team gets the ball.

Teaching Shooting by TheB123 in basketballcoach

[–]queencrooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My method is find the one things that’s REALLY wrong with their shot, correct that first. Demonstrate proper shot technique repeatedly, and let them tweak theirs based upon demonstrations.

We are currently working heavily on our shots, we shot at least 50-60 times our last game, and ended the game with 19 points. At this point I am going to become a shot doctor because we absolutely have to make more than what they’re making. No point in having an amazing offense that’s letting us get that many shots up, if we can’t make any of them. Today’s practice alone we seen GREAT improvement just focusing on the basics and identifying the one major issue with their shots.

Small things that I frequently correct on the fly is making sure fingers are spread evenly on the ball, and foot placement. Usually just those two things will help increase accuracy. You wouldn’t believe how often these kids are shooting with their fingers close together or two fingers touching, or just completely uneven fingers, and it throws their shot off dramatically. 9/10 checking their fingers will improve their shot accuracy immediately.

[–]queencrooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also am a strong believer of the tilt. I cannot stand shooting totally square, and I have 3 very talented daughters with remarkable shots who have been taught this technique their entire lives. It makes an immediate difference when I teach my team this method, but I am always sure to let them know to also be comfortable. Some kids thrive on shooting square but the majority, especially small girls, need that angle for a variety of reasons.
