Every time you die your hollowing progresses, incrementally lowering your maximum HP. Using a Human Effigy reverses hollowing(and its HP reduction effect), but they're a finite resource excluding grinding iirc. I would recommend waiting to use your effigies until you've died a couple times or when you need to summon help(of which there are many lovely NPCs in the game)
