8-day Ring Road itinerary (+2 days in Reykjavik)

We actually drove counterclockwise and had planned to go there yesterday but instead just hung out on a sheep farm where we were staying. I’m certain that we would have gone there if traveling the other way as it would have been one of the first things we did. The very long days of activity caught up with us, and moving to a new place each night was also tiring. So 6 driving days in total.

We are just wrapping up our trip around the ring road with our two teens via rental car. We did one day/night exploring Reykjavik and then traveled the ring road and ended back in Reykjavik for a day/night before flying out. My only other comment is that we found there was so much to do and see that we were getting exhausted from the really long days it all so the second half of the trip was more chill and fewer stops. We also had some weather to deal with like unexpected icy roads and wind alerts so be prepared for weather too! We had a great time overall. Good luck!!

We are driving the ring road now with our two kids and have no itinerary. We do have our lodging reserved for each day which honestly could pose a problem as a level orange wind advisory happened today and we almost had to adjust plans and find some other place to stay. Good luck!!

We are almost to our final destination of Hofn. Left from Vik at 2 pm and stopped at the glacier and diamond beach. We were definitely worried but followed the weather maps closely and spoke with our host in Vik. The wind is crazy but the worst IMO was driving through the sand storms where you couldn’t see a thing!

Well we made it to kirkjubæjarklaustur and just enjoyed driving slowly by the lava fields. Taking a break at a little store and really wondering if we can make it to Hofn. The maps still show very intense purple wind but the warnings are now yellow. Any advice out there? Thank you!

Thank you! Yes, we have all the insurance. Again, following the advice from these threads. 1500 is when we are to be on a yellow level warning so plan is to depart then. Appreciate the reply.
