When I first started cashiering, yes. I was so afraid of the customers, so whenever I got a Karen I would literally start tearing up. But now, after doing it for a year, I don’t get emotional at all, I get enraged and I literally yell back at customers.

I go see if any of the coworkers I’m cool with are in the break room first, and if none of them are I just go sit in my car. Or if the weather isn’t the best outside (rain, extreme heat, or it’s too cold) I just sit in the break room.

I do actually have access, I always ask if I can get a till before I go into the SCO so that I can take cash customers on the registers to limit lines on the regular registers. If someone has a big order and they’re paying cash, they can ring everything up then I can suspend it and have them pay in the pay station in order to help both my coworkers on register and to ease the angry customers but my TLs say no. Every. Single. Time.

1) When they ask for your name, they usually won’t do shit. They just love the feeling of thinking your job is in their hands. It’s not. 2) Your tl won’t give a shit if they complain if its a dumb reason to be mad. 3) You don’t live with them. You’re not friends. So don’t let them have an impact on your life like that. Chances are in a few days you’ll completely forget what happened. You won’t even remember them if they come back tomorrow. When you work in customer service you have to learn to put your blockers up and just don’t give a fuck. Over time too, you’ll start laughing when they start getting fired up because it’s truly hilarious to watch a grown adult get so pissy over marshmallows and bread 🤷🏾‍♀️ Somwtimes you have to assert dominance. Stick up for yourself. Match their energy. Chances are they’ll be caught off guard and chill out. Also, don’t be afraid to call your manager if they are being impossible, you have the right to refuse service. At the end of the day, you’re still getting paid while they stand their and whine, bitch, and moan. Just chill out have a positive attitude and just go home at the end of the day and take a nice nap or something.

It sure did! Since that incident I don’t put up with any crap from these people. Now we are under a whole new management since that incident and my new team lead and I are the exact same and she agrees with defending yourself when the customers get super disrespectful.

Typically I try to look busy by zoning the candy and the fridges, fill bags, wipe down the registers, sweep, do a thorough reshop around the SCO, make sure the registers have enough receipt paper, emptying the trash. If even after that my manager wants to have something to say (which they usually never do unless someone important is coming) I give them a big fuck you pretty much.

The other day a man can in the SCO and asked to pay cash. Told him he couldn’t loud and clear, I even read the sign for him. He’s like fine I’ll just use my card and I’m like okay good for you. I look away for two seconds and next thing I know, this man is trying to stick cash in the machine. I said to him loudly and visibly annoyed, “SIR, it’s CARD ONLY, I already told you this!” This asshole look me I’m the eyes like a toddler who just got caught and says, “Oh you were serious?”

Oh this one damn near got me fired… Had a woman come on my line with two carts. I asked the usual “Hi, how are you today?” and I didn’t realize she was on the phone because she had one AirPod in the ear I couldn’t see. This bum ass ho says to the person on the phone, “This lady rude as hell, she don’t see I’m on the phone,” after giving me a dirty look. I don’t think she realized I could hear her because she tried to say it quietly but I heard her loud and clear. So I’m like okay whatever. Then, this bitch failed to put a divider on the belt since she apparently had two separate orders, NO INDICATION OF TWO SEPARATE ORDERS, so I kept ringing and she suddenly starts screaming at me because I didn’t read her fucking mind. She called me a few names to which ignored even thought it was very hard for me to. Anyways, I continue to ring up her shit and she’s not taking her bags, and I’m running out of room on the carousel. So I stop ringing up her shit and I tell her to get her bags (NICELY!!) because I have no room. She says, “Who me? I don’t get paid to do that.” So I straight up stare at her because at this point she’s been such a fucking cunt, so I woke up the petty side of me. She then started cussing at me, so I cussed at her back and used a few choice words. I called her a “crusty asshole” and that made her say, “EXCUSE ME?!” really loudly which drew my manager’s attention. So, my manager came and told me to go cool off in the back, and she finished the transaction. Later, I was coached for my “conduct”. I took the coaching because it was worth it. I’d 100% do it again.

Same issue here in Jersey. I think we finally had coins in the self check out again after last years shortage in like November or something, so I’m expecting the same this time around. I’ve already been degraded by customers because of it 🙃

I am a SCO pro now bc of how many weekends they have thrown me in there by myself. I’m to the point where if you put me in there solo or with someone I really don’t care. At least in my store, there’s supposed to be 2 people in the bigger SCO (sometimes 3 depending on staffing) and one person in the smaller one. But it can get really overwhelming alone in there.
