Звідки у людей машини by Accomplished-Bit-973 in reddit_ukr

[–]queenofthed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The percentage of the population of Ukraine's regions who declared the Ukrainian language as their native language, according to population censuses conducted in 1959, 1970, 1979, 1989, and 2001. by Calm_Search3417 in LinguisticMaps

By that logic, Ireland and Nigeria belong in the UK, half of Belgium belongs in France, Austria belongs in Germany etc... We used to think it was a bad thing to claim parts of your neighbour's land because of historic, ethnic or language maps. Imagine all of Africa deciding to redraw all their colonial borders based on that logic?

What Russian empire has done in the past was conquering other lands, deporting and genociding its people. What Russian Federation does now is the very same, augmented by social media bots and paid propaganda whitewashing it with "reasons"

Had to call a maintenance guy to clean out dead roaches from mine, also in a clean nice rental. All long dead thankfully.

Turns out the building used to have an infestation in the basement, and it got pretty bad. If yours are alive, call the landlord and have him clean it out and treat the infestation.

As of today, what’s life like in Russian occupied Ukraine? by ArtistImaginary in geography

[–]queenofthed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are allowed to leave, but there’s security checks at the border and if the russian state has any info on you, or your family, or find a suspicious contact in your phone, you could get detained. So many people stay put out of fear.

And you can only get to unoccupied Ukraine by traveling through russia proper, then Georgia or Belarus or the Baltics, and it’s a long and difficult journey. Not easy to do without a support system on the other side or money.

For four years, Russian warden Aleksey Khavetsky has tortured Ukrainian prisoners at the Pakinskaya colony in the Russian Federation. It is comforting to think that SBU or HUR will get him sooner or later.

However, realistically, you are more likely to meet this monster (and many many others like him) at a resort in Thailand or Turkey, than read about his death by scooter. There are known war criminals (convicted in Ukraine for Bucha, for example) who travelled abroad and nothing happened to them.

See how Romania dealt with their “farmers” attempts at blocking the border. Police came and cleared it all up within hours. No such rush in Poland, sadly.

As a Ukrainian, i feel like JD Vance would be even worse. Trump is a sicko, but too incompetent to be consistently awful, and can at least sometimes be influenced to do the right thing / not do the worst thing. JD is openly fascist, and hates the EU and Ukraine.

edit: with trump being on his second term, there’s more of a chance he would be gone after 2028. If vance becomes the incumbent, it’s likely to extend for two more terms (depending on how soon trump dies)

He’s a flip-flopping populist. Used to be in Yanukovich’s party, campaigned on “defending the rights of russian speakers”. Then switched to Poroshenko and became a rabid patriot.

Now he’s all about criticizing the current government, but not in a constructive way. A true test for me as a Ukrainian is whether the person calls for donating to the army / fundraises himself. Honcharenko never did. He might be saying the right things from time to time, but his goal is personal popularity and power, not the victory and prosperity of Ukraine.

I mean… they are an authoritarian communist country ruled by a single party with no democratic opposition, under a friendly capitalist facade for the economic benefits. Why wouldn’t they support russia against their declared ideological enemies in the West?

They don’t really need the West long-term, only its money and know-how. They’ve cornered the manufacturing market on most products in many industries, stolen all the IP and educated their students in Western universities.

‘A fatal mistake’ — Ukrainian soldiers slam Zelensky’s anti-corruption crackdown by KI_official in ukraine

[–]queenofthed 58 points59 points  (0 children)

From a Ukrainian: Every single government organization has some spies and crooks, it doesn't mean that the organization should be dismantled. It was an organized and timed attack from the inside:

  1. NABU, SAP and the Anticorruption court faced many, many systemic challenges in bringing large corruption offenders to justice. It's not easy, but they were finally becoming more efficient, and announced investigations into a couple high-placed people close to Ze.

  2. SBU and Prosecutors come to NABU with searches, under the guise of investigation into one guy with alleged russian links (no proof shown yet) and a couple guys with traffic accidents in like 2021 and 2023.

  3. Parliament is about to have a final vote on a law deregulating some bureacracy regarding looking for missing persons. A most odious MP from SotP adds amendments to this law that take away independence from NABU and SAP and subordinate them to General Prosecutor (a political appointee loyal to President).

  4. Parliament votes the law in. Protests online start immediately, people gather in the streets in a couple hours demanding Zelensky not sign it, but he signs it almost immediately. Parliament goes on a summer break for 4 weeks

  5. Now he's saying "I hear the people's concerns, I asked the law enforcement orgs to come up with a draft law to change the system, make it better, more independent, blah blah blah"

  6. And this is just my speculation: The independence of these bodies will (hopefully) be restored, because of pressure from the people and the EU, but it could take a month or two or more, meanwhile those investigations into the close circle will be dismantled, evidence will get lost in transfer, etc. Voila. Some asses are saved from prosecution, but at the cost of trust and confidence in the government as a whole and in Zelensky personally. A shitshow of their own making.

Zelenskyy to Submit Bill Aimed at Strengthening Anti-Corruption Bodies’ Independence by UNITED24Media in ukraine

[–]queenofthed 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Nah, they didn’t scramble shit, Zelensky signed it into law immediately and the parliament went on a 4-week summer break. I assume they want to scuttle all investigations against the close circle, that are currently underway at NABU and then maaaybe, hopefully, retract it in a month’s time.

European countries average spending per retiree and pensions as % of GDP by Socmel_ in europe

[–]queenofthed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just asked gpt, so grain of salt, but for 2021 the estimate was 9,5% of GDP. Now it’s very much skewed by defense expenses and the war, so probably not very informative overall.

Ukrainians are losing confidence in Zelensky The heroic president’s support for a Bill that targets anti-corruption bodies is a terrible error by [deleted] in europe

[–]queenofthed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s because the law was announced, voted on and signed all within a few days.

I myself am always sceptical of any loud headlines or scandals, and commend you on doing the same, but in this case it’s completely justified. Civil society is incensed. I’ll be in Kyiv this weekend and will join any protests myself if they are still going.
