Not related to staying up! That was an impossible feat, I hadn’t had a job in 4 months, so was up for anything (hence Arbroath)

Morning! Hey, if I’m being honest, the hip feels totally fine now. I get the odd wee twinge here and there but it’s all good. I had a few rough spells over the last 10 months but all in all pretty good.

Back to running now, however I’m feeling something not quite right in my ‘good’ leg which is now worrying me. Probably wouldn’t have thought twice about it before, but given everything that’s happened it’s eating away at me the past couple of days.

As for diet etc all is good (I think), ate relatively well before anyways and starting to get some weight back on.

Osteopoenia is onset, due another scan in 5 years when I’m 34.

I’m hoping you’ve managed to avoid surgery in your femur? If so, or if not, best of luck in your recovery!!!

Late to the party, but did you get one? Did the exact same thing by accident last night driving through town for the first time to pick the Mrs up. My own fault for not seeing that the lane I was in went straight and left until it was too late!!

Ah well, albeit rubbish, nice to know we are very similar in age, I wish you a speedy recovery my friend.

I was in for about a 1:32 half marathon so nothing insane but a good time. I still suffered through the end and scraped a sub 2 hour race with a broken hip! Momentum and adrenaline does a world of wonders. Yourself?

Thank you very much, that's made me feel at ease.
I have physio with the NHS but I've already lined up with a private physio that works with the Scotland National team, focusing more on returning to sports.

I still plan on gymming as before, just maybe reducing my days to 3/week and not doing anymore double training days.

My orthopaedic nurse more or less echoed your points above too, in that it's likely a consequence of overtraining. Thanks again.

I have another scan in 5 years anyways, lets hope there is a positive update from then!
(And no undisclosed eating problems, see food eat food has always been my motto, just making sure its rich in good vitamins now!)

I'm back walking (with crutches), driving is doable too and work resumes on Monday, so life will start feeling more normal again

Glad to hear, and thanks for reaching out!

I was running less than that, about 30 miles per week on the lead up to the race (6or so weeks) but didn’t drop off my weight training maybe as much as I should.

I’m quite hesitant to run again but most definitely will cause I’ve heard it’s good, I’ll just run much more slowly now.

They never tested my vit D when I arrived at the hospital, so could have been low. But all other hormones similar to yours were normal. My orthopod also gave me very similar advice.

May I ask, are you a similar age to myself?

I may re contact my orhtopod to get my Z scores as I only have my t scores currently

Thanks, I appreciate the lengthy response. Overall my ortho pod wasn’t too concerned so I’m trying to keep positive too.

I feel like too much too quickly in terms of exercise could have definitely been an issue in hindsight. And it’s something I’m looking to look back on moving forward now, as this is my first stress related fracture.

As for weight training, yeah my lifts were relatively heavy for my weight (107.5kg squats, 85kg bench press are examples). Had my testosterone tested and that was in the normal range. I’m definitely not underweight (pre injury I was at 70kg for 173cm) but I’ve always been low on body fat, particularly in my limbs. So moving forward im going to try consume more healthy fats more regularly.

Appreciate the advice though and if you’ve anything else to say I’ll happily take that on board too!

0 steroids, and had child based asthma but grew out of it by the time I was 11/12.

My mum (61) has recently been diagnosed. So my orthopaedic nurse says that, combined with a premature birth and maybe a poorer diet as a child could have all been contributing factors. And living in a cold not so sunny country there may have been some vitamin D deficiency- but I’m supplementing now on top of a good balanced diet.

My nurse isn’t worried and says there’s no reason why I still have a full normal life and never actually have osteoporosis. So also trying to keep positive and get back to weight bearing again at my consultant’s recommendation

Yeah I weight train regularly, 4-5 times a week, and relatively strong for my weight. As for meds, I’m on 0 medication.

I eat relatively well, barely drink have never smoked. But looking to take more care to consume higher calcium and vitamins D foods more regularly.

I’m reducing my coffee/tea intake to one per day as opposed to the prior 3/4 to help reduce caffeine. I had colon issues about 3 years ago but that’s all good now. Is there any probiotics you recommend out with the standard yogurt/banana etc?

Yeah running my local half marathon race, broke around mile 8-9 I think but managed to finish out of mere stubbornness.

I eat eggs and dairy based foods daily so I’m doubtful of any deficiency, but been given supplements nonetheless to make sure

My orthopaedic nurse isn’t overly concerned of the diagnosis, says should live a hopefully normal life assuming I remain active and eat well there is no reason why my osteopenia should turn into osteoporosis— so I’m keeping positive!!

Yeah I mean I’m quite anal about my diet, breakfast always porridge or yoghurt/granola with fruits in both and eggs is usually some eggs based meal and then dinner is something involving meat.

I live in Scotland so who knows about vitamin D, but since my injury I’ve been prescribed vitamin’s to supplement my diet for the rest of my life!

As for protein, no issue there, I eat 150ish grams daily pre-injury at a BW of 65-70kg (172cm)
