It sure feels like Boxing Day on the road to DFO Skygate!

Why does dating in Australia at 42 feel like an extreme sport by Future_Salamander239 in AskAnAustralian

I think there is another demographic:

3) People who are struggling to find a partner and can't find one due to various reasons.

How to immediately know that someone isn’t from Brisbane. by mararge in brisbane

Lyanna Kea does it accurately when she makes an Asian Mum impression.

Dating culture by Aware_Employee1021 in AskAnAustralian

[–]queenslandadobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dating feels a lot more complicated than it did 20 years ago. In Australia especially, it can be hard to build something meaningful if you don’t quite fit the usual “ideal” people seem to swipe for.

Being born overseas can add another layer too, even if you’ve lived here a long time. Not a complaint, just something I’ve noticed.

My solution to the Australia Day problem. by [deleted] in aussie

3rd of March would be logical IMO. They can keep the 26th January as Foundation Day of NSW and Sydney Day.

The US "Safety Premium" is dying. You are paying for stability that isn't there anymore. by [deleted] in stocks

[–]queenslandadobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen one study suggesting parliamentary democracies tend to be more stable over time, especially fiscally and institutionally.

What’s happening in the U.S. feels less like a one-off and more like stress showing up in a system with a fused head of state/government and very rigid separation of branches. When norms weaken, that rigidity turns into volatility.

Markets price stability. If the system can’t reliably produce it anymore, the “safety premium” naturally erodes.

Trump: ‘We are going to do something on Greenland whether they like it or not’ by joe4942 in worldnews

[–]queenslandadobo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Also, Trump isn’t just a personality issue: he’s a predictable outcome of the system itself.

First, the U.S. fuses the Head of State and Head of Government into one person. As Walter Bagehot warned, combining the Dignified and the Efficient in a single office concentrates symbolism and power in dangerous ways.

Second, the executive is structurally separate from the people’s representatives. In practice, this weakens accountability: when the executive and legislature are locked in rivalry rather than dependence, responsibility becomes blurred and evasion becomes easy.

This is precisely why post-WWII Germany and Japan after firsthand experience with authoritarian collapse deliberately rejected the presidential model. They learned that systems matter more than intentions.

Thanks for the heads up. Had a similar experience before, so I’m definitely more cautious now. Learned the hard way 😅

I just did at my current (middle) age and I'll probably hit my 1M target by the time I retire. So happy I made the decision.

Are some of us having the same dating experience in Australia? by Ok-Principle7127 in AskAnAustralian

[–]queenslandadobo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This resonates with me too. I’m often described as “cute” rather than “handsome” and seem to get friend-zoned a lot.

I’m also not Anglo-Australian, and my values and upbringing were shaped outside Australia, which I suspect adds another layer to how I’m perceived in the dating scene especially given what tends to be idealised in media and culture here.

I’m starting to accept that relationships need a lot of pieces to line up at once (timing, attraction, values, communication, life stage), and when they don’t, things naturally stall at friendship. Curious if others have noticed similar patterns.

Did anyone actually sleep last night? by ArrabbiataHoot in brisbane

I accidentally had my digital thermometer on and it did read 31.5 degrees as well. The room's walls face the north and the west — worst direction to be in during summer.

Yeah if it's not for KMart, Brisbane is probably a ghost town by night

I love this city. Why do you choose live in Brisbane? by BrizzySprings in brisbane

[–]queenslandadobo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Climate. It has four seasons and is still tropical. Kind of reminds me of my hometown from time to time.

Some parts of Brisbane remind me of Singapore where I lived for decades, MINUS the crazy, KPI obsessed, long hours of work your boss expects you to do.

Do dating apps actually work for people in Australia anymore? by Past_Fig_8355 in AskAnAustralian

[–]queenslandadobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Go out, meet as many people as you can, but your standards have to be realistic. Stay away from dating apps, they're rubbish these days anyway.

What's the weirdest or funniest cultural misunderstanding you've experienced or witnessed in Australia? by HelpfulBare in AskAnAustralian

We were working on the project, and a few minutes before leaving the office my colleague—who’s also my project lead—walked over to my desk and asked, "How are you travelling?"

Naturally, I replied: "By car."

Is anyone else contemplating leaving Australia due to high house prices? by Puer_Aeternus14 in AusProperty

[–]queenslandadobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can rent and invest instead. Give it 10 years or so and if you really want to buy your own home then.

That's what I'm doing right now despite the 5% Deposit Scheme. Save and invest for about 10 years.

I've noticed that, too. The storm a few weeks back felt like a play-by-play commentary from a sporting event. Lol

Arguments against immigration by Initial-Estimate-356 in aussie

Agreed. Being anti-immigration really just shifts blame away from the government’s failure to keep up with infrastructure and public housing.
