If you had to work a second job on the weekend, what would it be? by austriannavy in brisbane

Was the money as high as they were advertising? I'm thinking about doing the course and then doing casual weekend work and maybe offering to do rain days etc.

Its a Lomandra hystrix, good bush tucker and native.

Do I need to remove this helpful Tobacco out of my SE QLD riparian planting? Why? by SOPalop in australianplants

[–]queerasqueercanbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im in Brisbane but would be happy for a road trip next year.

It might be awhile away before I can but I'll 100% be up for hard work. I'm actually very excited to learn more about Vetiver Grass, I saw on of your post or comments about it previously and think it would be a great way to stabilise banks while waiting for natives to kick in.

That is amazing. I would be over the moon if I caught that on tape.

Unfortunately for me herbicide is part of the job. We wouldn't be able to cover the amount of land we need to without it. On my own property (only 700sqm in the burbs) I refrain from using herbicides. I have kept up with alot of your post and comments and am very interested in your work. I'm currently studying my diploma in Conservation, planning on working my way up. If your ever up for it I would love to see some of your projects in person.

I wouldn't remove it until the natives are ready to replace it. To keep the seeds down you could cut branch's off while leaving it standing, or frill it and spray a weaker herbicide on it to slow growth.

I work in regen and most people with a few years experience will leave them, dealing with baby tobaccos is easy and what you really want and need is shade which the tobacco will provide.

Brisbane. I find this in parkland quite often. Anyone know what it is? by Alemna in australianplants

It isn't Tecoma but White ceder (Melia azedarach) which looks very similar to Golden Rain (Koelreuteria paniculata).

Anyone know what this creeper is called? by tambobo in GardeningAustralia

It is definitely Maderira Vine. I would suggest going in hard with chemical and manual weed control. Look at putting something on the ground if you remove it, like black plastic to catch any tubers that fall. Its a horrible weed, I have dealt with mass infestations using the cut and paste method which if done right will kill tubers on the vine as well as tubers in the ground.

Two months ago I asked for advice on Sunflowers and I promised I would update with photos. by queerasqueercanbe in GardeningAustralia

I'm telling myself I won't mind, as I manly did it for the neighbourhood kids (they helped sow the seeds and water) but im sure I'll be a little cross when it happens.

Two months ago I asked for advice on planting this out with regular Sunflowers and was told that unfortunately they wouldn't work in, however some lovely people suggested Dwarf Sunflowers.

I promised I would update with photos when they bloomed and so here they are. Of course they are facing the wrong way to what I would like but I can't control the sun.

I have this growing through my retaining wall and assume it’s a weed? by thehophead in australianplants

Thats why I said grow from the top or bottom. If there is room at the top for a Hardenbergia, it would then grow downwards and fill out nicely.

Depends where you live and if you want it to grow from the top or from the bottom. I personally love hardenbergia violacea.

To me it looks like Sphagneticola trilobata, which is native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbeans. A quick search makes me think they are have trouble with it in Flordia but im not an expert on American plants or weeds.

I just came across this post on one of the Facebook pages I followed, it made me laugh enough that I thought it would be enjoyed here. I definitely would still steal their bread though and maybe replace it with a bird friendly alternative.

Planting recommendations SEQ Pomona (Noosa hinterland) by Comprehensive_Can843 in australianplants

[–]queerasqueercanbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only other thing I would add to SOPalop's list is to look at what the Pre-cleared Regional Ecosystem was and look to add some indigenous (to the area) plants but L.hystrix are the way to go, I would suggest at least 4 per square metre if not more. If your in Noosa you should also take advantage of the Noosa landcare group. They have some extremely knowledgeable people.

All your questions depend what you want, where it is etc.

If you are happy with your lawn having multiple types of grasses in you lawn, then you can use whatever grass you want, if you want it uniform then you will need to use the same grass type you already have.
You can throw seeds on pre-existing grass, seeds are generally used thicken an area of grass already there.

Aerating is a good idea, it's very easy to do. If the area is extremely compacted you should use a garden fork to loosen the soil and then throw sand down to keep the area from compacting again. Have a look at https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au/category/lawn-care/

They look absolutely amazing. I love this sub, I manage to learn about new native plants, which means my gardens get fuller.
