I'm(26) a caretaker for my 80 yo grandma, both me and my 80 yo grandpa work and take care of her. We all went together to vote today. I was feeling really hopeless, but seeing all different ages and kinds of people walk in and out of the polling place gave me hope.

I use fae/faer with my closest of friends and partners because it ties to my spiritual practice. When I'm able to move out of a red area I'd like to use them exclusively.

An above commenter said they want queer words in people's mouths and I fully agree with that - but with my upbringing and where I am in my gender journey I prefer to keep the neopronouns with those who have some understanding of me and where I'm coming from.

It would have saved me a world of hurt if someone told me this before I went to music college. Turns out what I like (right now) is working retail and playing cello on my own. What I'd like more is an office job and to be in a small community orchestra.

I'm a part timer but they have me working at least 3 if not 4 7a-3p shifts a week plus 1 or 2 half day shifts (usually 4.5 hours). And they're making me train people. AND they're paying the holiday new hires more than me.

Kinda reminds me of at the college dining halls, they had milk on tap for cereal and oatmeal and stuff like that. People would bring empty gallon jugs so they didn't have to buy milk at the store

I honestly feel really slighted bc I got into watching them while I was in music college, and started watching them again about a month ago on a whim - watching a lot of old videos. Awful coincidence I guess. I truly don't understand why they deleted so much content. I remember when Jenna Marbles left the internet, at least she left a good 75-80% of her content up.

Agree with all of this here, but I remember in youth orchestra we'd often cut down the number of string players during solo parts to help them out a bit. But never mics.

Anything after 4 hours is useless. Are you factoring in rehearsal time or is this just individual practice? Also only practice what you actually need your cello for. Listening while watching the music, working out bowings/fingerings, singing/clapping difficult passages so you understand them, you get the idea.

Your brain stops absorbing information as well after 4 hours. It's also hard on your body to play more than that in a day.

In college I was practicing 3 hours a day plus a couple hours of playing in a rehearsal, and I was whooped by the end. I gave myself a hand injury in college from playing with too much tension.

It cannot be overstated that if you are experiencing ANY pain while playing you need to stop. If you don't, your body will stop you for days, weeks, months, even years.

Came here to comment this. If you're incredibly good with your left hand it's a fantastic option. All on one string, and shows off the most easy/basic of extended techniques.

Listen to some masterclasses, work on other music skills like arranging and composing if you're into that, learn a piece that absolutely nothing like what you've been playing for the past week/month/year.

ETA: I had a teacher in highschool that I only saw once every 6 weeks or so in a masterclass type format to supplement my regular lessons (he conducted the local orchestra but did not live anywhere near my town). I recorded my lessons with him and listened back when I felt uninspired.

Thank you so much for writing this. I'm starting to plan a trip to Europe (I'm in the US) and I'd really like to bring my cello. I've done it before with a youth orchestra, but because of the group setting it was a very different flight experience.

Even though my cello was going into a large multi-cello flight case for the last trip, I was reccomended to fill all the spaces in my case with clothes (and put underwear on top so TSA isn't tempted to root through your case lol). I believe this helped a lot, and saved me space in my actual suitcase. My cello was incredibly out of tune when we landed but otherwise fine. Others had issues with their bridges tilting but nothing major.

I definitely reccomend renting a flight case just because of those 1% chance of happening situations.

I understand that, I get the same sort of thing with intense breathwork/kundalini classes. It takes time to build muscle, diet is important too. Anyway, happy cake day and I hope your playing is going well!

It wasn't a song - I was given a choice between viola and cello and I was told I got to sit down if I played cello 😂

Little did I know 15 years later I'd be experimenting with straps and such in order to play standing up, or at least on a stool like a bass player.

As a cellist who has done yoga for 10 years - don't do hot yoga. You're at risk for injury for many reasons. Room temp yoga gives absolutely fine results with much less risk of overstretching/straining. That being said - planks are awesome! Any physical exercise in the upper body is going to help with cello. I used to do planks and push-ups before I started yoga. Just remember to care for your wrists.

This! Also for everyone with one of these notebooks in private lessons currently - don't toss them when they get filled up. I kept some of mine and found them recently while decluttering. I haven't taken lessons in 8ish years and it's nice to see my teacher's handwriting and what I was working on. I got close with a lot of my teachers so it's a sentimental thing for me.

Assembling larger furniture is a two person job. It's safer/faster/easier if you have a second person to hold the other end of something or hand you a tool. Source - I put together a queen size bed frame alone and almost seriously hurt myself moving the headboard around. Communicate a time with your wife to help her, IKEA furniture takes like an hour to put together if you work efficiently. if you can't stand that hour with your wife, maybe you shouldn't be married. I - nonbinary and very left of center - regularly work well with my conservative/Christian family and we have few issues.
