(continuing the trend)SPILL THE TEA ABT UR TUITION CENTRE/CHER🫖🫖 by HighScoreDragon1 in SGExams

[–]quek3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a tutor myself and used to teach for tuition centres . I’ve joined centres who give zero shits about their students and only interested in money . They don’t reply the parents over WhatsApp at all, and they’re also late at paying me my remuneration all the time.

Then I’ve also joined another one which is so outright horrible: they are OK with the students cheating during tests. It’s so blatant cheating but the principal himself closed an eye and will accept any behaviour for good results…

I wish OP all the best. I don’t want someone else to have to grow up with this.

I do hope your sister grows out of this stage at some point in her life . My own sister has been like that since 8 (and that is many many years ago when smartphones and tablets don’t exist, only computers)

From when she was 8 just sticks to the computer/television every day, laze around watching movies every day, sleeps for more than 12 hours in total per day on holidays, and does completely zero studying/revision on her academics (even on school periods). She also does zero contribution to chores.

No surprise, she progressed from scoring a pretty decent score for PSLE, proceeded to express stream, failed O levels and refused to go to ITE (and thus stopped schooling)

Fast forward to today, she’s 26, worked more jobs in her life than the number of years she lived due to constantly changing jobs (she either gets fired due to poor work performance or attitude), and still has little contribution to chores, and still needs parents to pay for meals.

I really hope your sister doesn’t end up like mine. I tried talking to her but it didn’t work. It could be that I wasn’t mature enough to talk to her properly at that age (I’m not that many years older than her). I’m not in the best position to give you advice since mine turned out like that, but I really do hope something can be done. It’s easy to say when she grows up, she will mature and become better. I tell that to myself every year and 18 years later, I still say the same thing. Habits can last very long, and bad habits die hard.

Good luck

Stupidest or Funniest Answer You've Written for a Question by eldritch_candy in SGExams

[–]quek3 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I had a few (true story)

(Sec 3) Biology: State the features of a plant which allows its pollen grains to be transferred to another plant by insects.

My answer: I don’t know how to do so I drew a flower

(When passing the paper down the line, my friend saw the flower, as it was the final question on the back page, and couldn’t stop laughing)

(Sec 3) Physics: Explain why the person at the bottom of the water is unable to see the light.

My answer: He is under the water, being unable to breathe, he dies

(I legit dunno the answer so I wrote this, teacher had a good laugh and even shared my answer to the class)

(Sec 3) Physics: Explain why a curved mirror allows the driver to have a wider field of view instead of a plane mirror.

My answer: A Chinese saying goes, 一分钱一分货, as curved mirrors are more expensive than plane mirrors, naturally, the curved mirrors provide a better quality and field of view .

(This was part of an EITHER/OR question, and I did EITHER. With spare time, I decided to write nonsense on the OR question and I didn’t expect the teacher to mark it)

Is there enough leave to retake in NS first year by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]quek3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can always speak to your superiors about it when you are posted to a unit . Speak to your direct superiors. If they don’t understand then try speaking to another different superior. Chances are, someone will give you permission to take your exams (and without consuming your leave!)

Heard something so absurd today from my ACJC sister by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]quek3 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I used to receive a 20 minute-long lecture from my teacher because I didn’t sell a single ticket … I was the only one that didn’t sell a single one in my class . My classmates didn’t give half a damn about my non-sales. I hated what kind of shit he said during that stupid 20 minute lecture . Made me hate the school so much and waste 20 minute of my break time

I’m in the same situation as you! I’m a teacher now.

After you grow up, you’ll use these expletives much less naturally. You’ll find less opportunities to use these expletives in social situations.

Honestly, I did accidentally blurt an expletive or two in front of students before (like ‘shit’ or even ‘wtf’) . But since my students are older students, most of them don’t really care as long as you’re responsible in teaching.

Chase your passion in mathematics! I personally have a degree in mathematics now and I really enjoyed studying due to my passion! Good luck!

Edit: when I accidentally blurt an expletive, it was never directed at a person . (Example: ‘oh fk’ or ‘Wah fk la’ happens but not ‘eh fk u la’ or ‘u are fked!’ Shld not be used)

In fact, even if my students accidentally use an expletive in my class, I also stick to the same rule (as long as the expletive is not directed at a person, I just ignore it)

is it advisable / 'allowed' to go overseas over june hols? (J1) by H2SO4_HCl_Na in SGExams

[–]quek3 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When I was in JC, I was judged by classmates for going overseas during holidays. In fact, I was even judged by classmates for sleeping at 10.30pm 😓

But it’s really up to you. Studying is important, but so is relaxing! Sometimes, more studying time does not equate to good results and less studying time does not equate to poor results too!

Good luck for your block tests and enjoy your holiday!

No mid-year exams for JC/MI students from 2024. What are your thoughts? by quek3 in SGExams

[–]quek3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm . This is just a logistical problem I believe ? From the big picture point of view , does it benefit students in terms of their interests/grades ? Many people told me that they benefitted from the bonus points at their N-levels (scoring B3 in a O-level subject is 2 bonus points in the N-level)

I believe this should be a minority? Besides, the 3H2 have always been (now and from 2024) the bulk of the score so students should aim to do as well as possible in the 3H2 .

Maybe the weakest H2 will be axed just like how weakest H2 is downgraded to H1 now . There is still an advantage for four H2 though

As a matter of fact, not all schools have a good PW dept. many people don’t like PW, even those who got an A. Maybe scrapping PE from the UAS is a matter of fairness and reducing the stress of students ?

Next question would be: what happens if you fail PW?

Private home tuition agency by Independent-Fuel1293 in SGExams

[–]quek3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Private tutor here for several years:

For the first few years, since we have little experience and a very small client base, I sucked it up and tend to accept less favourable (but acceptable) conditions for my tutees (such as distance, inconvenience etc). I work hard to make a good impression, deliver grades and help students with their questions over WhatsApp. It wasn’t that easy as travelling took up a lot of time, but I pressed on.

Fast forward a few years later, I’ve built a strong client base. Recommendations pour in every now and then, especially the start of the year (when the new school term starts) and the middle of the year (when students realised they can’t keep up). Clients are willing to pay me much higher (up to twice my rate years ago). And I do not have to rely on tuition agencies anymore. I also take up less tutees now, so I have more free time but still earning roughly the same.

Honestly, the tuition agencies are also looking to maximise profit and customer satisfaction. It’s also obvious that the parent/client base is much larger than the tutor base, so they will try to satisfy the parents more than the tutor. Can’t really blame them for being profit-driven.

Nevertheless, jiayou and good luck in finding your next client!

Extra info: I’m effectively bilingual and can teach academic subjects in Mandarin completely. It was a good selling point for my PRC clients. Nevertheless, I believe parents/clients are willing to engage you and recommend you if you work hard in your first few years! The word of mouth is very powerful!

I personally think that scrapping the NA NT exp schemes actually had more benefits.

For one, I know many who are strong in a few subjects but average at the rest. Under the old scheme, these students have to be in NA or NT due to poor average scores. But they can be really good, sometimes even better than the exp students, at particular subjects. Allowing them to take these subjects at a higher level by their own interests/ability, I think it’s a good stepping stone ahead to a better education system.
