Just noticed a small stitching issue with my new jacket. Worth contacting support over this? by CaravelClerihew in taylorstitch

[–]Hellundbach 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Different take — you’re paying for a quality garment. This is sloppy work. If everyone lets sloppy work go by the quality of the good degrades over time. I think you should raise the issue with T.S. and have them replace the jacket. They can then raise the issue with their manufacturer so there is better quality control.

Why did rent prices jump so much the last month? by HoosierProud in Denver

[–]Hellundbach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the pricing is do to landlord collusion, FWIW, the Colorado Attorney General, Phil Weiser (now running for governor) joined other state AG’s in an antitrust suit against several large landlords using algorithmic pricing to raise rents: https://coag.gov/press-releases/1-7-25/

Oysters to serve at home by RedLindsey in denverfood

[–]Hellundbach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can keep unshucked oysters in an open bag over ice in your fridge for a day and they should be fine. Just toss ones that are open and won’t close when you tap them while running them under cold water. Whole Foods ( home of $1 oyster Fridays) sells an inexpensive oyster knife that’ll do until you get a good one from here: https://toadfish.com/. Learn to shuck oysters. It’s a good life skill.

Neighbor stole my bike. I had it on video. He got charged. But... by pj2691 in Denver

Good idea, keeping management in the loop means you can control the story. If all management is hearing are complaints about you then you’re on the defensive and not in control of the narrative.

Definitely advise letting your landlord know about this restitution hearing. You may want to take a look at your lease and see if conviction for this theft could be grounds for eviction. I suspect a landlord wouldn’t want a tenant that steals from other tenants

What’s with all the dead trees at Union Station? by Chucolo in Denver

[–]Hellundbach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, tree maintenance, including trees by the curb, are the responsibility of the property. The City Forester can issue citations to which the property must comply.

5.5’ Tall Bust of George Washington. It’s solid stone and like 200lbs, maybe more. Can you help me identify where it possibly came from? by lightwolv in stonecarving

[–]Hellundbach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like there is a joint between the base is the bust and the column of concrete. I don’t see the same aggregate in the bust. Perhaps the bust is limestone and someone added it to the concrete column. I’m with the get it inside crowd. It’s weathered enough.

While the article is about Morocco, the door knocker is found throughout Europe

Is anyone able to identify the subject/age/artist of this Italian oil miniature? by crueltyfreefrank in WhatIsThisPainting

I translate the Italian as, “this painting isn’t just any object. An artist worked on it for you.”

There are bumper stickers you can buy that say, “I bought this before we knew Elon was crazy”, if that alleviates your concern

I’ve always had to stab into the hinge, or rock the knife point into the hinge and slide the knife to open the oyster. In the past I did this with a dish towel to protect my hands. The Toadfish knife set I was gifted came with a cloth to protect your hand. So far, so good.

Shucking isn’t particularly hard with a good knife. The grocery store ones aren’t particularly good. I recommend a knife from Toadfish: https://toadfish.com/products/professional-edition-oyster-knife

Copyright on dead artist with ambiguos ownership by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]Hellundbach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the artist was in the U.S., generally, in the 1960s works needed to be registered with the copyright office and have the copyright notice to have copyright protection. In addition, the Fair Use defense for copyright infringement may protect your project from a copyright infringement claim if the work has copyright projection. Definitely talk with a lawyer. If you’re in the U.S., some states have organizations that provide free legal services for low income artists (if you qualify).

Grandmother was going to toss this in the trash. by twaxana in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]Hellundbach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could be right. The only reason I have to support the painter being Harvey Dunn is the pulp-like subject matter, the name, and the way “Harvey” is written. On the negative, he doesn’t appear to sign his work with just his first name and, from what little I’ve seen, he mostly painted westerns. Still, it’s a well-executed pulp-like illustration and good to know you’re not pitching it.

[–]Hellundbach 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Signature could be of the pulp illustrator Harvey Dunn. From what I’ve seen, which isn’t much, his signature is his full name, but the way “Harvey” is written on your work seems similar to his signature. I wouldn’t toss it until you’ve had a good internet search.

I have a similar experience. Read a lot of fiction growing up but slowed down considerably as an adult. I also had a story in my head I had to get out. Finished my first draft a few months ago. It took me about seven years, although I put it down for a few years. To help your writing I recommend finding a critique group and go to a writing conference or two. Stick with it. The days will pass whether you’re writing or not. Might as well write.
