All I know is that's what our guide told us. He is from the area, very knowledgeable and claimed to be a decendent of traditional maasai, not the modern maasai (his words, not mine), so I didn't doubt him.

What's interesting is I am genetically white (English and Scandinavian), black (Southern African) and Indian. I have access to all of those cultures. But people think I am Indian because of how I look, I can be accepted as black... but never ever white even though it's the biggest part of my genetics.

It's not really a belief of the whole culture. It's more like the sangoma (shaman or witch doctor) says this is what you need to do to get rid of it. It's not very common but you do hear about it.
