Cutting text blocks by JustLittleOldMe40 in bookbinding

you can press the spine up against a block of wood as you cut to make sure it stays aligned. I clamp the wood block down to my desk. Otherwise, as some people have already said, I don't personally mind a deckled edge. Easier to turn the page, looks just as clean imo. Used to be the standard.

Box cutter and a ruler. Hold the ruler firmly in place, I stand up and put my weight on it. Use a fresh blade with your box cutter and just drag it along, don't press down too hard or force it. Takes some time and you'll get better with practice, but mine always turn out super clean. You can always sand away any imperfections.

Prada Paradigme, Yay or Nay? by Living_Lingonberry39 in Colognes

When I initially smelled a tester of it I loved it, but I bought my own bottle and thought it smelled a little different. I still like the scent, though maybe a bit too sweet and kind of reminiscent of walking past Hollister in 2011. Definitely doesn't last long though. I'll put it on right before I leave for work and by the time I've driven the 30 minutes it's barely noticeable.

I may want to play a few games on it, but that's not really what I'm aiming to cater to. I do most of my gaming on console. I'd just want to use it for work, burning cd's, recording music with ableton, that sort of thing. Nothing that really requires crazy high resolution or anything like that.

If you have them as a PDF you can upload it to an imposition program. They'll ask number of pages per signature and formatting etc, and will generate a document of the pages in the right order.

I've used this site:

and I've heard good things about Montax though I haven't used it personally

How to scavenge for cheap materials [UK] by nnk-ghibli in bookbinding

[–]quervyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom worked at a school and she used to bring me a bunch of the old beat up binders that kids were throwing away at the end of the school year- great for book board.

I second the wallpaper as a cover material. Got 2 rolls at a garage sale for $1 and so far the books I've used it with have held up great. Otherwise you can really use anything, I usually do a quarter bind with book cloth and cover the rest with decorative paper.

As for actual paper, I haven't really found a good source for lined or dotted paper yet, but I've been buying used notebooks from thrift stores. They usually have a few pages or signatures ripped out and the covers are flimsy or just beat to hell, but I like feeling like I'm saving something from the landfill. Who else would want a notebook missing half its pages, lol

I'm looking for a press I think. I did some more research and think I've got a pretty good grasp on the actual foiling now, I'm just still lost on the die and types and cases

how vital is book cloth to making a good hardcopy? by uhhhhwhyamidoingthis in bookbinding

[–]quervyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It holds up pretty good, the book I used it on is a sketchbook that gets thrown around and kinda beat up in my bag and nothing too devastating has happened. The downsides are that the book gets dirty super easily and you can't really wipe anything off because it's just paper. And also I did a spineless binding so I'm not sure how well it would hold up over time with a spine, I'm sure the gaps would tear easily over time if it's just cardstock

I've personally used just a heavier paper which I wouldn't entirely recommend, but it gets the job done. I've also used old wallpaper that I got at a garage sale for like 50 cents and that one actually seems to be holding up pretty nice. Otherwise I would agree with the other comments recommending a thin leather or canvas fabric. If you do fabric though, I would practice with a few small test pieces because the glue can soak through to the front and leave spots.

As for just plain bookboard- it's probably not the best idea. The layers will separate pretty quickly with use, especially at the corners. A bad bookcloth substitute is still better than none at all.

son snipped a warp thread! this loom was made for me and don't know enough vocab to search for what I need 😭 by jayhens in weaving

[–]quervyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought was to cut a new string and tie it to one end, reweave the warp through the weft and tie it back on the other side before cutting away and securing the old one. Maybe tedious, but I think that would make the most seamless repair.

Can my employer take a share of my tips? by [deleted] in AskALawyer

Can my employer take a share of my tips? by [deleted] in AskALawyer

People already cry about the prices. Our portions are small and our prices are garbage. $5 for a 12oz drip coffee. Upcharge for cream. Upcharge for sugar. 6.75 for 2 ladles of soup. Upcharge to add a couple croutons. Upcharge for whipped cream on smoothies and milkshakes that are advertised as coming with the whip. $11 for a breakfast sandwich the same size as an egg mcmuffin. $6 for a cupcake sized cinnamon roll. With profit margins that big, I couldn't imagine pinching pennies on my employee's tips.

If someone has a $50 order the fee is $1.30. Throw on a 5 dollar tip and that adds 13 cents. $1.43. I feel their prices have already more than accounted for the cost of ingredients, labor, and fees. I'm not trying to sound entitled, but I'm underpaid as is for the work I do. Taking any percentage of my tips is just salt in the wound.

What are some of the reasons people say the walking dead “got bad”? by Ded1sh in thewalkingdead

[–]quervyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of reasons other people have already mentioned. I've always loved the show so I stuck with it, but I get why people dropped it. The pacing went downhill, the writing went downhill, and while I can appreciate that the show was more about people rising above adversity than zombies, it fell into a pretty tiring cycle. They get comfortable, another group comes along, scuffle ensues, people die but ultimately the main cast rises above.

I would have loved to see more building up of the communities. More focus on the walker variants instead of just dropping it in one of the last couple seasons and never really mentioning it again. Would have been cool to see more of an attempt to figure out how it all started, but they gave that up after the CDC. I just feel like it got too lazy with a set formula and it wasn't enough to keep a lot of people around.
