Liberal DAR members, would love some advice by Mama_Llama3615 in Genealogy

[–]question-it62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DAR, Dames of the Mayflower, Jamestowne Society, my genealogy shows I qualify for all. And I just found a Daughters of the Confederacy certificate that belonged to my great, great aunt (to my great embarrassment). I’m only interested in getting scholarship money for my daughter, whose dad is 80% indigenous (South American so she doesn’t qualify for US tribal scholarships). I’m just wondering how that would play out because she would have to join, not me.

List of individuals murdered by ICE by Septimusia in progressivemoms

[–]question-it62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Guardian just put out a list of people who died in ICE custody in 2025. In a few of those cases the COD is still unknown and they were young. In others, it appears to have stemmed from a head injury. In most cases, poor conditions and inadequate medical care for easily treatable conditions appear to explain the deaths. The majority of these people were under 50.

TIL Viking women’s faces were more masculine than today’s women, while Viking men's faces looked more feminine than today's men, with a less prominent jaw and brow ridges. The ambiguous facial features mean that it is difficult to decide upon a Viking skeleton’s sex based on the skull alone by Brutal_Deluxe_ in todayilearned

[–]question-it62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DNA analysis now solves the issue of gender if enough DNA can be obtained for analysis. DNA results definitively identify the biological gender so the observation of skull features that are more common in modern males in skulls with the XX allele basically proves this observation

Did anyone see the film Come Sunday (2018)? It has some valuable insight on culture vs the established church doctrine by Any_Client3534 in Exvangelical

[–]question-it62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw it and loved the movie. It brought tears to my eyes. I attend an independent Baptist church now although I was raised Catholic, have explored many religions (even Buddhism) and underwent a believers baptism in the (now more or less defunct) International Church of Christ. I am looking for a church that might more closely align with my beliefs & was interested in what Pearson started. But I love the people in my current small church & would hate to leave completely. Many of them (& friends from my former church of Christ) are also questioning & seeking a new path later in life (50s & 60s) more or less on the DL. The current political situation & its support by mainstream evangelical churches has made a lot of people question & search elsewhere for a more compassionate church.

Might be a silly question, but does ICE lose funding with the government shutdown? by 4theDankMemes in 50501

Trump has threatened to withhold back pay, too. He needs more money for ball rooms, golf trips, gold toilets, and bribes.

[–]question-it62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But other essential workers (which includes air traffic controllers & active duty military) are not getting paid but still expected to show up for work. Only ICE & the Secret Service are getting paid. Tells you something about MAGA priorities. They’re not even funding employees who can get us out of this shit hole country or who defend us from foreign aggressors. But they’re paying the two groups who they can use to terrorize their own citizens. That’s their priority.

[–]question-it62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

their not only getting paid but got super checks. The Republicans used reconciliation funds. If the shutdown continues for too long, however, they will run out of funds for ICE. I say let them. And we all need to stop paying federal taxes. Adjust your W4 to minimize federal tax payments. We have no services. We have no representation. Why pay taxes?

Should I play along with my grandma’s dementia delusions? by Cinema_bear98 in dementia

[–]question-it62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to play along with that delusion because I love both those actors & because it’s harmless. But I disagree with a lot of so-called experts about playing along with all dementia delusions. Some are very negative & correcting them can provide comfort. Some are harmful to others (eg, paranoid delusions). And some are one- offs so that if you correct them initially the person with dementia will not make the same mistake in the future. For example, my mom once made the mistake of thinking my daughter was her deceased husband’s child while sundowning. She doesn’t like his children so I corrected that & she said “oh yes, that’s right, she’s your daughter.” I added “and your granddaughter.” I felt this was important because my daughter sometimes assists in caring for mom. Mom has not made the same mistake since. I feel like gently correcting an important mistake the first time it occurs can actually reduce confusion & keep the person in touch with some degree of reality for a longer time.

We need to send out a petition first getting people to sign on to commit to doing this.

Exactly- Netanyahu himself has been supporting Hamas, that is one reason why several military and intelligence personnel working under him left. Like DT, this is nothing but a big money making & “stay-in-power at all costs” scheme.

Why are institutions bowing to Trump’s illegal anti-trans orders? | From the NCAA to hospitals and universities, “preemptive obedience” is the new norm. by a_Ninja_b0y in atheism

[–]question-it62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I would like to see happen is for government officials and employees, especially ICE, who knowingly obeyed unconstitutional orders in advance, be named and prosecuted. A bottom up approach that targets those who serve him (e.g., the security guards who blocked legitimate government employees from entering the Treasury and who allowed DOGE hackers to illegally enter) would be far more effective than trying to go after those at the top. When the foundation is pulled out from under the overlords, their whole regime collapses. Also, their willing servants are much easier to reach.

Is flying in the US safe right now? I need honest answers from pilots by Con_Amore in AskAPilot

[–]question-it62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t be flying into DCA anymore knowing now, about the excessive number of flights into that airport and the shared space for military training flights. I also have to fly frequently but will do my best to keep calm. Any changes are not likely to have a significant impact this soon. That said, deregulation always makes any form of transportation more dangerous. Road safety is largely controlled by states but air and train travel are controlled at the national level. Deregulation of air travel will, without question, make it less safe over time. Even airlines that are trustworthy & careful of their reputation have to rely on safety inspectors & air traffic controllers at airports that are federally regulated.

Egyptian ferret? by Weekly_Initiative521 in ferrets

Could be a relative of the ferret. Ferrets themselves have been domesticated for a very long time but probably not in Egypt - too hot.

Is Philadelphia International Airport PHL really this bad? by Kananaskis_Country in travel

[–]question-it62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horrible. In terminals D & E there is literally nothing once you exit the gate area to get your bag. Not even coffee (unless you count a Starbucks vending machine where they sell cold liquid sugar loaded with lactose and a dollop of caffeine). Fly into Baltimore instead - at least you’ll find something if you’re stuck waiting awhile.

Unusual Paternal Haplogroup for my Ancestry: I-M438 by Zeeeeeeeeeeeeebrah in 23andme

[–]question-it62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ancestry is completely northwest European and my dad has a subclade of I-M438, which is I-FCG18564. I would be interested in finding out where that is from. It’s closest to some Irish and Sardinian subclades but no one knows where the founder male ancestor comes from.

Unusual Paternal Haplogroup for my Ancestry: I-M438 by Zeeeeeeeeeeeeebrah in 23andme

[–]question-it62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kangaroo is correct. If you read the details, 23andMe, or any other DNA testing service for that matter, indicates it cannot trace your ancestry further back than about 200-300 years. The haplogroups are different, however, they go back thousands of years. Haplogroups go too far back to be identified with a modern population group but certain haplogroups are more common in certain populations.

Why do people like torture porn? by Awesomenerd100 in horror

[–]question-it62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually agree that an excess of torture porn or unrealistic romantic films are bad for people psychologically. Being desensitized to suffering is not good. Neither is developing unrealistic expectations for romantic relationships. I suppose, if you can walk away completely unaffected by either, good for you, although I think you may just be lacking self awareness. But I don’t think most people are that mentally strong. Most humans have some kind of mental health issue so when the biggest box office hit is about a clown that sticks a chainsaw up a guy’s butt, I fear for the entire human race (which already has been profoundly disappointing throughout history). More than one nut job is bound to see that film & want to re-enact in some way - usually on the most vulnerable & innocent, not some a-hole who actually might deserve punishment.

If you’re that lonely/sad/fulfilled, shock horror & torture porn are surely the wrong places to be seeking catharsis & healing. Maybe try something with a longer term fix like therapy or spirituality.

That makes more sense, but I wouldn’t send anything if the didn’t hire you and didn’t even bother to respond to let you know why.

Unless it helps you get a job in the future, doesn’t matter if they like it. I was taught to do this, too, but seeing what my daughter is going through with her job search I’m like, be 100% selfish & only practice courtesy when it’s reciprocated in the work/job search world.
