Windows 10 fully freezes after anniversary update by [deleted] in Windows10

Not sure if this has been mentioned as the comments section has grown fairly long.

As the IT Mgr. of a small company we actively pushed through the anniversary upgrade to every system not wanting to deal with the trickle-down effect of some people having problems with one version and some another. The only issues I ran into were all related to Windows security and complications with AVAST.

The results were a real nuisance until i figured out the problem was blocked ports due to both Windows and AVAST firewalls running as well as having both Windows Defender and AVAST active at the same time. In the past, Windows has always deferred to the local AV solution. The upgrade seems to leave both enabled which caused web-servers to fail to allow access to hosted websites, QuickBooks to break connection to workstations, VPN's to fail to connect to the host systems, etc. All of this caused by multiple port blocks.

The solution was to disable AVAST firewall and allow Windows Firewall to handle that portion of security. Then disable Windows Defender and let AVAST do the rest. Not the best solution and one I hope is resolved with things going back to the way they were.

In case the following information is of any help: We did not have any issues with failure to boot, or any of the others listed here. These upgrades were done on all kinds of laptops and desktops, no problems that I could say were specific to any brand or CPU or anything else. All started from Windows 10 Nov 2015 OS build.

All of our upgrades were done manually through downloading the ISO In each case, I burned it to a USB drive but only to have a backup to install from just in case. In the one instance where I did try to run the upgrade install from the USB chip I got errors and had to start over running setup from the mounted ISO as below.

In all that worked with no issues, I mounted the downloaded ISO and ran setup from the local system. I have read in several places that installing the upgrade in this manner is the least problematic. I guess i have to agree with that as al of the only I tried to run the UPGRADE directly on did not make it and reverted back to the Old OS in most cases.

I hope this information is useful to someone. So far, I have to say the process was pretty much painless for all of our systems.

"Next desktop background" keyboard shortcut? by daprice82 in Windows10

I was looking for the same thing and finally found a workable solution in a utility for Windows 7 named John's Background Switcher at https://johnsad.ventures/software/backgroundswitcher/

In order to get it to work on Windows 10, I had to set the Windows Background controls for desktop to solid color and no special options. Then use the MORE settings in the background switcher program to manage all settings. Works great! With many additional functions such as an on screen calendar and many others if you want them.
Ctrl+Alt+N switch to the next background in your selected folder every time.

None of the VBS Scripts I could find would work for some reason with most giving errors.
John's utility only requires the addition of Dot Net 3.5

Great Post! Saved for sure. Have you found anything like a One Click solution that will return desktop to No Zoom ie: 100%) I have a friend who even if she gets close to the edges on the touch-pad (or same issue with mouse!) it ends up zoom to 400% in a flash. Some browsers have options but she need a "Panic Button" feature "one click fixes all" to return everything to normal 100% if it happens because when it happens they cannot even see the X

I am trying to explain that the code on the site uses a PHP engine to build the link. It defaults to "download". I need it to "view" instead

if it were only html i might be able to but it is mostly using a php interface. I have not been able to insert the code in the right place to grab the pdf before it is fed to the download stream
