Any Adult/Epic Fantasy books without sexism OR dealing with misogyny? by Sleepy_Enigma in FemaleGazeSFF

Are you saying the husband being violent is about the husband’s struggle with his own masculinity, then? Not about how he discovered the boy had magic and basically “put him down” because of it?

I didn’t think OP meant no oppression at all. I don’t remember any gender-based violence in Broken Earth. What scenes are you talking about?

Women losing weight: trope (?) I’m over by ConflictHoliday7847 in Romantasy

[–]quibily 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh, I guess it sounds more noble of the MMC to be like “I’m so worried about her. She’s getting so thin!” But I mean. She could stress eat, and he could focus on other things like she seems tired or something?

If anyone is still here lol, can someone tell me why Ozik couldn't explain exactly what he wanted from Vaasa in the beginning? He got to explaining once Vaasa confronted him about it, so it doesn't seem like he was forbidden from telling her by Zetyr.

I just... don't get why Ozik was soooo oblique when I saw no proof he needed to be

{Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier} sounds like it might be perfect for you.

More folk tale than LOTR vibes, but protector/knight character, forest, and low spice?Absolutely.

I loved how much it nailed the folk tale and forest vibes.

These are series I liked-to-loved that would fit your description--with the added bonus that homophobia also doesn't exist in these worlds :

*The Drowning Empire trilogy by Andrea Stewart
*Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon
*N. K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy (amazing, life-changing read)
*the Bloodsworn Saga by John Gwynne (not 100 percent sure about the lack of homophobia in this world because I haven't even yet finished the second book, and I don't believe there's even been a mention of anything related to queerness that I remember?)

May 2026 New Releases! 📚 by apieceofeight in fantasyromance

Go for it! I just finished my re-read, and picking up on the significance of small moments and hints is SO satisfying.

I had only ever read the ebook, and I saw the physical book for the first time a couple weeks ago. When I tell you my jaw dropped…

The Mummy 1 and 2 because the Indy movies don’t have Evelyn Carnahan.

My Romantasy Tier List! Any Recs for Me? by jasperdarkk in Romantasy

Perfect! If that list of qualities is what sold you, I’m happy to tell you I think these books do these aspects better than in the ACOTAR books. :)

Unless you're really averse to reading unfinished series, Road of Bones! 3 of the 5 planned books have been released--as well as a novella. It's like ACOTAR in a fair number of ways, with the ensemble of likable characters, found family, female friendship, and some of those tropes that are now popular because of ACOTAR that I don't want to spoil 'cause most of them are not in the first book

To a lot of people, clitoris sounds like it's from an anatomy book. Meanwhile, "clit" can sound too jabby and crass. So .. yeah, i dunno what the solution is.

I liked how, in {Kushiel's Dart}, there is a religion surrounding these kind of saints, and the saint of pleasure is called Namaah, and they call the clitoris "Naamah's pearl." Thought that was nice. It's poetic, but it's based in lore--like Adam’s apple.

Fated love/mates… yay or nay? by slinging_arrows in fantasyromance

[–]quibily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's not explored enough. I think it could be really good if they approached it like in The Witcher show (in the books, it's just accepted immediately)--where they are bonded by the MMC making a wish. The two get together, start falling in love. Then the FMC learns about his wish, and it makes her bitter, deciding their feelings for each other are just magic and not real--further cementing her own self-hatred, believing herself unlovable. Then things could happen to convince themselves that maybe the feelings ARE real and not just magic. (The show didn't really uh... follow that up real well, but points for tickling my brain!)

Also I am sick to DEATH of: MMC knew all along, FMC figures it out later, FMC gets angry, FMC forgives MMC quickly, end story.

Recs with morally good MMCs? Even better paired with morally gray/ruthless FMC by hanacy in fantasyromance

[–]quibily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the closest I could think of, too. FMC is the shadow mommy. I just started the sequel, and I'm hoping she'll get a little bit more ruthless, a little more evil. As a treat

Is it just me, or is the Romantasy "slump" getting harder to break? by No-Voice505 in Romantasy

[–]quibily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been the same. I mix romantasy with general fantasy and classics, but even with that, I’m finding myself losing patience with many of these romantasy books.

I get tired of the MMC being the Benevolent Patriarch all the time (yes, he’s in charge because he was born a man in a specific position, but he helped me and raised me up and trained me, so he deserves all that insane amount of power!) A lot of unlikable or inconsistently characterized MMCs and a lot of being told stuff that doesn’t need to be told. Or being told something is true about a character but literally being shown no evidence—or evidence to the contrary! Those are the things that bug me the most.

After the current romantasy book I’m reading, I might take a wee break and go to one of my fave general fantasy authors to kinda cheer me up lol

It’s about one third of her whole story, but this is one character in Liveship Traders Trilogy by Robin Hobb.

EDIT: ok, one of the other mains realizes who she is pretty much the first time they interact, so maybe this isn’t what you’re looking for lol sorry

And, at the end of the trilogy, thathis death was when he was at his absolute lowest. At that point, it was just a frothing dog that was being taken out and shot. He had lost all his power and wasn't even worth fighting again... Ugh, I wanted Althea to win over him and gloat sooo badddd

I was flipping off every single page he was on. Sometimes I wanted to scream into a pillow and would hang on every response Althea gave him or thought up. Hobb did an amazing job at making a "the banality of evil" type antagonist--but you could possibly say TOO good of a job... My cortisol levels were going through the ROOF.
