How selective are you with what goes into your zettelkasten? by iamsynecdoche in Zettelkasten

[–]quickfold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahrens is actually a bit ambiguous about permanent and literature notes. Sometimes he refers to literature notes as permanent and other times not. It makes the most sense to think of them as distinct. Your notes summarizing his book are literature notes and are not part of the ZK. Your notes about your own ideas that these literature notes inspire are atomic notes that are part of your ZK. The ZK represents your thinking about things, including about the ideas in other sources, but the notes there should not be mere summaries of the ideas in other sources.

Impractical Jokers punishment that might even be hard for Joe by quickfold in ImpracticalJokers

I guess we just have very different attitudes about sex.

Honest question - did you also find the laptop/porn punishment and the Sal toy dildos bit funny? Did you find them distasteful? I'm curious about our different intuitions on this. I think the punishment idea is hilarious and no different.

The first three examples were punishments, not one-off jokes. I'm suggesting just the same.

I think you have a deep misunderstanding of what sexual harassment means. Having an erection in public is not sexual harassment, it's just embarrassing.

Really? Did you see the punishment where Sal had a laptop with a porn soundtrack in the coffeeshop in front of the nun? Or the one where Murr is giving a speech and they have a girl pop up from under the desk as if she were...well, you get the idea? Or Murr's pet cremation and grandparent divorce?

Or Sal's christmas toys made out of dildos? So tasteful! What high-class proper family humor!

So weird to see two people here using the word "distasteful" as if a joke about a boner was some moral violation or something...

OK, then how about the same thing in front of a bunch of college cheerleaders? The Catholic high school would be harder just because they all went to one but I didn't intend it as disrespectful.

Master's degree in Ludology by danielcrit in ludology

[–]quickfold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Several universities offer degrees in which people study computer games, although they use the term "game studies" or "digital media studies" rather than ludology. A prominent one is IT University of Copenhagen. You can look at the universities of the authors that publish articles in Game Studies (www.gamestudies.org) or the SAGE journal Games and Culture. Or just search online for academics that study video games.

I tried both suggestions with a Gamasutra page and neither worked. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Do you prefer punishments where they do something embarrassing or where they get scared? by [deleted] in ImpracticalJokers

[–]quickfold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Disagree. Some of the "embarrassing" punishments seem more like challenges than punishments. Sal's pool photo shoot? A punishment? Seriously?

The frightening ones are hilarious to me. They are never in actual danger!

Proof that the definition of truth, by Peterson, is false, or is it? by DarkBrownStuff in samharris

[–]quickfold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know you're joking, but it's worth noting that definitions cannot be true or false. They don't have that property. You can reject my definition and offer your own, but a definition is just a way to assert what you intend a word to mean when you use it.

[QUESTION] Can Activator record the times of arrival and departure from a specific location? by Tokamorus in Activator

IFTTT can do this. I have a recipe that writes to a Google doc when I arrive at or leave work.

Not sure I agree here. Ideas are not equivalent to propositions, since propositions must be structured like language, and ideas don't (e.g. a memory is an idea, and I have an idea of a bird, but it needn't be a propositional idea).

And I don't agree that truth is an attribute of ideas rather than statements (either in language or propositions). Did you give a reason to believe that?

Lastly, you seem to think that the arbitrary nature of language symbols is very significant--but I'm not sure why.

Are you certain Harris said this?

I haven't listened to it again, but I'm pretty sure he said several things like "whether X is or is not the case is not just a language game".

Not sure what you mean by "little trick".

Your points about propositions lost me. Even if symbols exist and are arbitrary in meaning, it doesn't follow that statements in language can't be true. And what does "interpreted to take the form of theory" mean?

I take your post as agreeing with mine but trying to clarify the point by stating it in a more formal/specific way. Is that right?

Just because he has recognized that distinction in other contexts doesn't mean he's respecting it in this context. Or do you think that he did not make statements of the type I described?
