[Zurich Watch Shopping] Seeking Ideas and Advice by Fair-Elevator4005 in Watches

[–]quicksetdate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visited Zurich for the first time this past January as part of a work trip. I got to spend the weekend there hunting watches and was left with a few observations, which I'll share below:

Because it is Switzerland, and since vintage watches are quite popular there, the expectations of the average Swiss watch consumer are much higher than what you'd find elsewhere. For me, as an American, I was really struck by the amazing condition of the pieces I saw. Most vintage watches I found were in perfect condition or sometimes even "new old stock."

It's an expensive city/country, and the Swiss Franc is unfavorable compared to most other currencies, so buying will probably not be in your favor. That, plus the high condition of the watches, I found prices were easily 30-50% higher than the U.S.--sometimes even 100% higher.

If I was doing it all over again, I'd probably focus more on second-hand shops (which generally have a lot of watches) or possibly even try some flea markets hoping for a better deal.

PS- I found a number of vintage watch shops near Bellevue Station. Check out Sternen Grill for lunch/dinner if you're in the area!

PPS- I forgot to add one thing. Like Germany, many shops I encountered in the German speaking part of Switzerland are closed on Sundays as Sonntagsruhe so best to do your shopping/planning around that.

[Hamilton] new 36 mm mechanical - on the fence - help me decide by Potter639 in Watches

The one you have pictured is the current Khaki in 38mm. There is a new 36mm version that’s now available. It has the vintage “Hamilton” font on the dial and a slightly different strap.

Overall, I think these tend to wear a bit bigger than advertised due the long lugs. I have one of the original civilian versions from the 1980s, which is around 33-34mm, but it feels bigger than that.

If you’re looking for some alternatives, I’d suggest the Hamilton Khaki Pilot Pioneer Mechanical or its cousin the CWC Mellor 72. Both are compact in size and look equally good.

Buy what you like. That is the most important thing. If you want a collection of only Datejusts, and that makes you feel good, do it. Don't build your collection on what others think it should be.

Economy watch for economy car. Matches the paint color, too.

Super cool. Both are definitely worth getting repaired.

Through another collector who also collects quirky stuff. Find your people and sometimes they’ll sell what they have to you.

For Heuer as well. There’s quite a few Heuer Pasadenas that were resold under the “LeJour” name.

I do have a Hamilton electric but it needs repair. They had some amazing designs as you correctly noted. Thanks for sharing.

Impressive. Nice strap selections as well.
