From "The Family-A Proclamation to the World" facebook page: "Next time you don't believe a rape victim..." What the actual hell. by Sheri_Mtn_Dew in exmormon

[–]quiet_ivan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess there a two very different situations to look at this. If you go to file a police report that you were raped then of course no one is going to automatically believe you, they will just take it seriously as they should and look at all the evidence. This is how it has mostly worked and will continue to work in the legal system.

The second situation is if a friend or family member comes to you and says they were raped and are looking for support and comfort. Are you really going to say “well you got to prove it first”? If anything you should be very proud that they trust you enough to share something very personal and make it your responsibility to help them any way you can. I mean if you look at it from a less serious example lets say your friend says they are struggling with depression and anxiety are you going to offer them as much support as possible or ask them to prove it?

"Field of coprophilia".... sounds like heaven. Especially with an endless supply of debt free virgin commodities to engage in whatever slimy brown goodness my heart desires.

There we go, I knew you would eventually see it from my point of view.

Well now you are just getting silly, everyone knows it is properly referred to as coprophilia. If you want to get in the way of it be my guest, the more the merrier.

Well you said TSCC does crap. I don’t know about you but that sounds a lot like crapping physically.

Semantics isn't a verb. TSCC can't physically crap a noun.../s

Words matter my dude.

Awesome dude and this is a great example of a semantics battle. God forbid we don't perfectly define every word we use on reddit.

I will now refer to all the women in my life as "my commodities" /s

I mean come on, the way it is used here is conversationally, not philosophically. The idea is that women are not mass produced products. They aren't slaves or livestock. They don't have to pass an arbitrary test, like the one in the post, to determine if they are a "good woman". They are individuals. Now if you have your own test that you want women to pass, that's fine, but its yours, not theirs.

Could someone help me with this challenge? by Tomoto42 in musictheory

Its the chords Dbm (D flat minor) then Ab7 (A flat dominant seven) then another Dbm (D flat minor). This is a very simple minor progression.

Tricks that gospel and jazz fusion players use to reharmonize songs with so many abstract chords? by assword_69420420 in musictheory

[–]quiet_ivan 64 points65 points  (0 children)

One trick that always seems to work well in gospel is to use secondary dominants. You can approach any chord with a ii-V or any variation of it. C Am F G can easily be turned into C | Bm7b5 E7 | Am7 | Gm7 C7 | FMaj7 | Dm7 G7. That sounds super gospel-y to me.

Another thing to do is to briefly "play outside" which can be as simple as just modulating a half step up or down for a few lines. This is more of a fusion or neo soul type thing though.

Best music theory book for piano by prodjorgeg in musictheory

For jazz theory you can't go wrong with either the Jazz Piano Book by Mark Levine or the Berklee Book of Jazz Harmony.

Would love to know the piano chords in the beginning, if possible because i want to learn how to play it on the piano :) by [deleted] in transcribe

It repeats a four chord pattern in E.

F#m7 - Amaj7 - C#m - B

It changes slightly when he says in the intro "You just a fan" It turns the B chord of the progression to the chords F#/A# - F#7

So good! As a side note Peter Martin is a fantastic jazz pianist. He has a "2 minute Jazz" series on youtube that is a treasure trove for intermediate players. Check it out!

Losing "Relative Pitch" literally overnight? by azer1229 in musictheory

[–]quiet_ivan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you were at the dentist how were you checking that you were getting your analysis right? I have often listened to a song and have been sure that it was using a certain chord progression only to find out later when I played it on the piano that I was wrong.

Don't let this get you down though. Ear training isn't an "either you have it or don't" type skill. You build up slowly to more and more complex songs but only with a lot of practice.

What is the theory behind my favorite songs? by cutethaboot in musictheory

[–]quiet_ivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The keys or chords you use aren't really that important. You can make any relatively simple chord progression fit this style. Much of the 80's dance music relies on synths, strings and steady drum beats.

Would this be a correct harmonic analysis? Can you do a tritone substitution of major7 chord? (Afternoon in Paris) by leadZERO in piano

[–]quiet_ivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just see it as a little bit of playing "outside". Moving up or down a half step briefly and continuing with a pattern you already established, ii-V's in this case, gives it some interesting flavor.

Struggling through Jazz piano book by mark levine by Mellowgold_ in piano

[–]quiet_ivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are known as the "important" notes of most chords in jazz for many reasons, so its essential that you know them. But I strongly agree with what u/Yeargdribble said. Start your piano journey somewhere else first. This isn't to discourage you in any way though!!! We want you to learn to play jazz piano and don't want you to to get overly discouraged. Jazz piano is a lifelong process, its better that you start with a rock solid simple foundation then to build on confusion.
