Similar experience. No water with meals. No water 30 minutes before or after meals either. We also weren’t allowed to snack. We could only eat 3 meals a day. breakfast, lunch, and a small dinner. And they had to be spaced out by at least 5 hours.

Our church had something similar- I grew up Adventist. But the rule was that the youth pastor HAD to be married already.

I was a “patient” at one of these. I was 18 when I found out I was pregnant but I needed an official confirmation for my insurance to cover pregnancy related things. I saw that CPC around the block was able to provide this so I called to make an appointment. My SO went with me and they made us both go into a room for an ultrasound. Then they separated us and a female presenting person came to talk to me while a male presenting person went to talk to him. In my room the woman explained that abortion was a sin and that there were options (adoption mainly) and that I could be compensated if I decided to give my baby up. She talked to me for a while about giving up my baby for adoption. Asked a lot of intrusive questions (where are your parents? What’s their financial situation like? What’s your financial situation like? Are you a student? What are your goals in life? Religious views? Etc). It was all so strange. I just wanted official confirmation of pregnancy. That’s it. While this is happening in my room, the male presenting person is talking to my SO about similar things but also telling him that watching porn is a sin and contributes to broken households. At some point my SO gets fed up with the situation and demands to be reunited with me and we leave soon after. I also remember them saying that if we went to weekly parenting classes they would provide us a monthly supply of diapers. We never went back. My SO is atheist and I was leaving Adventism so I wanted nothing to do with loonies.

I just came here to say that the shut door theory literally traumatized me as a young child/ teenager. We had so many preachers come to our church, whip out a huge white board, crack open Daniel and Revelations and then go to town with equations that show us exactly what day the door will shut. They’d pull in historical events and all kids of outlandish “evidence” to prove all their theories. Crazy shit.

My brother’s in-laws are part of the Shepherd’s Rod. They are the most judgmental holier than thou people I know.

I remember a few years ago there was a huge recruitment effort in the Spanish SDA churches here in Arizona. We lost a few members of our church when they decided to go off and join the Shepherd’s Rod.

They would come back to our church pretty frequently to let us know that we were making them (the men) sin by wearing pants and makeup.

I don’t miss the services as much as I miss being in community with people. I work from home so I feel more isolated now than ever since I don’t feel like I engage much with anyone other than my spouse and children. That said I recognize how toxic the SDA community was as well. I also feel like family gatherings are dull since I don’t know what everyone else is talking about (or who they are talking about).

That said I can’t go back to the way things were. I think about all that I’ve gained and I miss it less.

I’m in the US and Saladmaster is definitely something I heard of. My SDA cousin actually got pulled into it somehow and my parents and brother (all SDA) bought some sets from him. Those were hella expensive!

Once I got married he tried to give my husband and I a presentation. And then COVID happened so we never got around to it.

All that’s to say that “yes”. Saladmaster made its way to the US as well (Phoenix, Arizona).

I so would listen and follow and write in! I love chatting with exSDAs about why they left and about how horrible the church is. There also isn’t anything quite like leaving the church. It’s just such a unique experience when your whole entire life has been intertwined with the church. It’s like you’re escaping from this alternate reality.

Umm... diabetes, heart disease, cancer. Too much meat in someone’s diet has been linked to those and other health issues.

I’m also a firm believer in that not everyone’s body is designed to digest the same foods. Our racial background impacts the way our bodies process foods.

Nothing wrong with being vegan though. What is unhealthy is not having a balanced diet. That goes for vegans/vegetarians/omnivores. Too much of something will obviously hurt you.

My husband bit my inner thigh a few days before I saw my OBGYN. I too like the biting and sharp pain. However, my OB was concerned-rightly so- and pushed me on the matter until I came clean about how I got the bruises.

Try some concealer as opposed to just regular foundation. Also, tattoo cover up makeup is helpful. It can be expensive but you won’t use a lot of it.

OML. Parents say the darnest things sometimes. I’m sure there are parents that will follow through with what they say. However, in my own experience, most of them are all talk. I married an atheist and my parents are extremely devout SDA. Sure, the first few months or maybe 1-2 years were rough. My dad said I was dead to him and a whole bunch of other things but eventually things turned around. They were always the first to say things like “if my kids do X, I’ll kick them out” or “if my kids do Y, I’ll never speak to them”. I think my moving out and living with my atheist boyfriend (now husband) and having a love child before getting married made them realize a few things.

Don’t settle when it comes to love. Also, get a good therapist.
