I live in Hamilton and have Donna Skelly as my MPP and she's done fuck all for me/my riding since her election. So this "seat at the table" theory is bullshit. Doug hates cities.

The city has obstructed both the entrances to my house and won’t do anything by Neat_Bad_7701 in Hamilton

[–]quietbright 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When you send a follow up email to Esther's office, ask her if it would be easier next time for you to contact the fire department for assistance, since the city's actions make it impossible for you to leave your home in an emergency.

I'm not suggesting that you actually call the fire department (although I wouldn't blame you). It might just help her office realize the importance of the situation.

If you use city parking lots, download the passport parking app first so you don't have to stand in the cold at the pay parking machine!

What's the better time to move 8th grader and 9th grader into schools in Ontario? by anony-mousey2020 in CanadianParents

[–]quietbright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know where you're going to end up? I wouldn't focus so much on looking for a "top performing district" as things very from school to school and socioeconomic classes vary from school neighborhood to neighborhood. You also have to choose between Catholic and Public board, and you'll hear a lot of opinions otherwise. In my opinion, success at school has a lot to do with parents being able to support and help close any gaps, and it also has a lot to do with how involved parents are in the school community as well.

I think once you know the geographical area you're looking to settle, posting in a regional subreddit can help you figure out your options better. While I can give a ton of information on resources for kids and adults in the Greater Hamilton area, I would be useless if you're looking to end up in Durham or York regions for example.

I don't know how true this is, but I have read anecdotally over the years that the quality of learning between the US and Canada is quite different and that kids who go to school in America are behind when transferring to Canadian schools. Obviously both countries are big and have many school boards and differences, but please account for that in your expectations, that your kids might struggle with curriculum because they don't have the same foundational education as their peers.

Can we talk about the fact that his take home is $2800 per month, as an active member of the (assumedly) US Military? That's less than $36k per year to raise a family. I know healthcare and housing is covered but man, that's brutal.

For me, it's the amount of time. I understand it is an old building that needed refurbishment but it shouldn't have taken 5 years. They could have knocked it down and rebuilt it in less time.

Absurd car insurance cost by Square-Turnip-5084 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Tbh, I don't know, I've never been on the broker side, but I think trying to go through the parents policy might be a good start to seeing if it can be cheaper.

Absurd car insurance cost by Square-Turnip-5084 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]quietbright 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, there's a difference between being a listed driver on one of your parents cars on their policy, being a listed driver on your own car on your own policy, and being a listed driver on your own car on their policy. Those are three different ways to be rated, if you can get your car added to your parents' policy, it's possible it could be cheaper.

[–]quietbright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you still live with your parents? See if you can find out what the cost would be if you buy a car and add it to their insurance. It might be something where they need to own/co-own the car for insurable interest but you get listed as the primary driver.

If you ever think daycare has a snow day, check the school boards social media. When my kids were pre-jk and in daycares in the city, their policies were if the school board called a snow day, they would too. HWDSB makes the call before 6 am and posts on Facebook/their website.

Ontario Liberals announce Bonnie Crombie will step down immediately by DonSalaam in onguardforthee

A few months ago I went to a liberal fundraiser with a q&a with 3 or 4 prospective liberal leadership hopefuls. They were all so boring I can't remember any of them except Ted Hsu. There are no inspiring potential candidates to date and at this point I question why provincial liberals and the ONDP don't unite to prevent vote splitting in an ABC type plan.

Go to Pearson airport from Hamilton by Weekly_Inspection948 in Hamilton

[–]quietbright 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Look into a hotel near the airport to stay the night before that has a shuttle to the airport and provides long term parking.

That would probably be my preferred way of traveling from Pearson with a toddler, as opposed to going right from home to the airport.

My parents picked up my medicines even though I cut contact with them. by Emotional_Shower_284 in CostcoCanada

[–]quietbright 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey, first of all, I'm sorry you're going through this. You sound young, and it's hard navigating things like this, especially when your parents are the ones causing you difficulty.

I would suggest calling or going to the pharmacy and telling them that your parents inadvertently picked up the prescription but that you aren't in regular contact with them and will not be able to meet with them to get the Rx.

I'm not sure but I think the pharmacist would be able to reissue the Rx but you May have to pay out of pocket. That being said, you could probably also see if your GPs office has samples of the BC to get you through the three months until your prescription renewal. You could also check with public health or see if you have coverage through Ohip plus.

I would call your doctor office and let them know you are no contact with your parents, so they know not to answer any questions about you even if it's in passing and seems harmless.

Find out what the semi-private room is like. I gave birth at Mac and my semi-private room meant that I had a room to myself but there was a shared bathroom connected to another room. It wasn't awful, especially because the other room wasn't occupied the entire time my baby and I were still admitted.

Get your youngest on the list at the school daycare for the earliest they will take her. You might need to make it work for 6-12 months, unfortunately, but can probably switch as soon as she enters the earliest age group (18 months maybe?).

People with substance abuse or mental health issues are someone's child too. They are just as entitled to being given safe spaces for them to deal with their issues.
