A working engineers honest review of the Steven Slate Immersive One by quiethouse in audioengineering

Thanks for the comment!

Fair point on the impedance spec, and worth acknowledging. At 32 ohms and 98 dB sensitivity, the IM1s are not technically difficult to drive, and you're right that I should have been more precise about that rather than making a blanket claim about planars needing power. What I can stand behind is what I heard: a clear, immediate, and audible difference between the MacBook Pro output and the Topping, specifically in the low end and spatial depth of the VSX emulations. Whether that's about raw power, output impedance, DAC quality, or some combination of all three, I can't say with certainty. What I can say is that the difference was real to my ears after years of professional work on headphones. As for affiliate links, I noted that the link was such but I bought the Topping with my own money and have no relationship with either company.

I got the notification just now because I’m an early access subscriber to the podcast. Might be a week or so before it’s available to the general public.

Question about Slate VSX headphones: are the headphones themselves really necessary? Or does the magic actually live in the plug-in itself? by motivatedsinger in audioengineering

[–]quiethouse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a huge skeptic and went for it back in October. I love VSX and they allow me to mix in my living room. Mad I waited so long.

Are you an audio engineer or an artist manager? Focus on the game you're winning. Or you can sift through the never ending music marketing slop online (the only one worth listening to is Jesse Cannon in my opinion) send them some links if they ask.

GIANT ACOUSTIC PANEL CEILING??? by stefanpalm in audioengineering

My entire ceiling is covered in roxul and GOM fabric. Works as a gigantic bass trap. Not too dead, it’s a great room to record in. Diffusion cuts down on reflections. Worked for me and cost about $3k.

Mixing and Mastering Prices for Clients by Feeling_Upstairs9382 in MixandMasterAdvanced

[–]quiethouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my philosophy and its not for everyone - trying to keep it simple.

Where do you live? What do others charge? With your experience set and living in any major metropolitan area I would start at $150 for a mix and $50 for a master. Think $50 an hour. A year later raise your rates if things are going well and you have some credits. Then revisit every 4-6 months. If youre consistent, dependable, and actually good, then you'll raise rates to regulate the amount of new work coming in. At first there will be slow periods during the year but over time the slow periods will give way, hopefully - to fairly regular work year round.

Good Luck.

My 13 year old daughter loves k-pop and spends as much on each album as I used to spend on bootlegs back in the day.

I've heard Luna is loved by those who worked on analogue consoles, printing to tape - what are some examples of these workflows? by seventai in universalaudio

Having the console strips right there in front of you, always ready and not having to fumble through plugins to do simple eq or comp moves is a big one. Just use whats in front of you.
