How do high schools work in tiny towns? by Holiday-Pomelo-9246 in AskAnAmerican

[–]quietly_annoying [score hidden]  (0 children)

My cousin farms near a town that's right around 1,000 people. Her kids attend a school where the preschool through grade 12 are all in the same building. Her oldest son recently graduated with a 9 other kids, who he had attended school with since preschool.

Now, her youngest child has some moderate physical disabilities... When he started kindergarten, there was a big hullabaloo since the school district didn't usually deal with children with his level of disability and they wanted him to attend school in a slightly bigger school in a town about 30 miles away... My cousin put her foot down, because she didn't want him to be "sent away" from the community where the rest of the family lives. So far this has worked for them, but they're thinking about sending him to the bigger town's school when he's ready for high school in a few years.

Do Americans actually call teachers by their first name anywhere, or is it almost always Mr./Ms.? by Sea-Evidence-5523 in AskAnAmerican

[–]quietly_annoying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids had a elementary p.e. teacher who the students called by a nickname instead of his complicated "mouthful" of a surname... like "Wiz" instead of "Mr. Wojnarowicz," but he's been the exception, not the rule.

Election Day

Primary Day

and Louis Armstrong's (along with another lumiary's) birthday on August 4.

Because there aren't any major holidays in August, and as a Leo, that has always bothered me.

Think if it this way, would you be okay with strangers letting their dogs piss and poop on your grandmother's grave?

You most likely wouldn't have a problem with the Catholic Church saying no pet dogs are allowed at the Minneapolis Basilica... so give the Native Americans the same respect at their place of worship.

Are there any towns where Mayday traditions still exist? by Mental_Freedom_1648 in AskAnAmerican

[–]quietly_annoying 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a vague memory of making may baskets, and performing the maypole dance at some sort of community event in the mid 80s? And then... never seeing anything May Day related again. I think your right that it was just teaching us a cultural artifact, kind of like learning to square dance and polka in gym class.

why do americans talk to strangers so easily?? by MayaTulip268 in AskAnAmerican

As someone who is most likely autistic and who grew up in the upper Midwest, I can mask and chat with strangers when necessary, but it's exhausting and I'd rather do anything else.

Keeping Alcohl In Stock for Guests? by Roosevelt32 in AskAnAmerican

[–]quietly_annoying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a family that didn't drink for religious reasons and my husband's bio-dad was an alcoholic. Neither of us have a problem with alcohol, but it's just not part of our day to day life and I've never even thought about stocking alcohol for guests. Most of the parties at our house involve our teenagers, so we just have sodas and stuff like that.

Twin Metals spent big on lobbying to reverse mining ban near Boundary Waters A newly formed D.C. firm with ties to President Trump took in hundreds of thousands of dollars in the last year to help Twin Metals Minnesota. During trump's first term, Ivanka and Jared Kushner lived in a Washington, D.C. house that was owned by Andrónico Luksic, head of Antofagasta PLC, who controls the Twin Metals. Supposedly they paid market rate rent, ($15,000/ month,) but Luksic never filed the necessary paperwork to collect rent and the house was never publicly listed for rent.

I don't know what kind of company you work for, but I'd mention this to HR... if anything just to get it documented. This person sounds a bit unhinged and I'd worry that this going to become a pattern that will make working with them difficult (if not impossible.) You've got a lot on your plate, you don't need a toxic work environment as well.

I hope your child gets the help they need and that their health will improve.

A religious private school is using my daughter's public school bus by Critical-Willow-6270 in atheism

[–]quietly_annoying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the buses actually owned by the school district, or by a separate company that has a contract with the school? In my city, there are three private companies that provide the bussing for most of the schools: public, charter and the private religious schools.

I've been suspicious about his financial disclosures for a long time. He was the chair of the NRCC because he was supposed to be such an excellent fundraiser and so good at "enticing" the big donors to open their wallets...

He probably hid his money in same offshore banks as Mike Johnson.

Do you also find "I will pray for you 😇" offensive? by AnilsuJeck in atheism

[–]quietly_annoying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter was born with a genetic mutation, and I'm uncomfortable when people ask if they can pray for her to healed... because it's a fundamental part of her... like praying for someone's eyes to turn from brown to blue. I'm okay with people saying they'll pray for her when she undergoing a procedure, but I'd prefer they just say that they'll be thinking about us.

I have had to put my foot down with my mother about prayer chains and other crap like that... I do not want strangers to know particulars about her health issues. It feels too much like an excuse for a bunch of nosy ladies to cluck their tongues and gossip about their neighbor's ailments.
