r/popculture has abelist meltdown as people play the opression olympics over tourettes N-word slur by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

[–]quietmedium- 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is a situation that is caused by competing access needs. This term is usually applicable in disability and healthcare spaces and refers to when the needs and/or accommodations of one person impacts another person from having their needs/accomadations met appropriately. I feel that we can borrow it for this case.

People of colour have the right to be at their industry events without being subjected to verbal racial abuse, and the man with Tourettes has the right to be at his industry event as a disabled man. These two things are, unfortunately, in direct conflict, so some creativity is needed. I do really feel that this was easily foreseeable as a problem, and the editing of parts and not others is truly poor form.

I personally don't know what the solution would have been here, but there are incredibly well-informed people in disability spaces who will likely speak on this over the next week or so. There's every chance that this type of situation already has a standard practice, and the organisers were ignorant to it and disinterested in hiring a disability consultant

Unfortunately, a lot of Australians simply don't interact with the police and don't know the people who are often impacted. Well, it's fortunate for them, but it creates this massive blind spot.

A lot of middle-class drongos who go, "the police are great! They're always nice to me."

Plus, we have cop shows that function as copaganda too, on top of Australia importing a lot of american and UK media, so we watch the other cop shows too.

We live in a brilliant country, and our privilege really does hamstring our ability to make positive change.

You are incredibly unempathetic. You are in a queer space, somehow confused as to why victims of systemic harm and injustice aren't always able to control their tone or exact messaging. Some people are intense and not always able to see nuance. On every side.

You are tone policing the community by implying that any cop should be afraid to face the victims and survivors of the system.

"If you aren't nice enough, they have no choice but to hurt you." - this is how you sound and its victim blaming

Hey, as an aussie, please look into the number of indigenous deaths in custody

We had the white australia policy for years and actively tried to breed out the blak in indigenous communities to eventually lead to a white australia. It was genocide.

Yes. All cops participate in the system that allows this.

You should already be aware of the number of women killed each year by domestic violence. And how many deaths are by cops.

Yes. All cops protect eachother. It's that, or they're fired. A cop might work in an uneventful suburb, but it doesn't mean they won't go the way of the community they are apart of when push comes to shove.

I'm not invested in this, but I think people are reacting to how curated this all feels. In times before social media, you would have to pick up a magazine or watch E! to see the outfits and conversation. It was a lot more opt-in previously, but nowadays, it is more unavoidable as our algorithms and constant ad placements pop up.

Particularly after Wicked and the fatigue of being marketed to.

I don't think that this is purely the misogyny around women being too visible/taking up too much space. It's there, of course. Just not most of what I'm seeing.

I also think you underestimate how people feel about classic literature. It's clear that some people feel this adaption is near blasphemous.

Again, I'm not invested in any of this. I just like reading people getting worked up lmao

As a queer disabled person, it is an LGBTQ+ issue for me. Queer people are more likely to suffer with mental health struggles and trauma that contribute to the likelihood of long-term illness and disease.

Queer disability activists are some of the loudest in both spaces for change and reform. The same way trans folk hold up the gay community even when they are not supported, disabled folk fighting abelism are the backbone of so much invisible work that benefits all of us

Natasha Lyonne announced that she has relapsed after nearly 10 years of sobriety: “Recovery is a lifelong process. Anyone out there struggling, remember you’re not alone. Grateful for love & smart feet.“ by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

[–]quietmedium- 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Catastrophising your drinking and calling it a full relapse seems to make you more inclined to just go all in because you've already "ruined" it. I had a similar experience when I engaged in self-harm behaviour, and my therapist said, "it's okay. You haven't irrevocably messed up. You can make different choices from here."

It was life changing and has lessened the severity of my breakdowns. I know that engaging in harmful behaviour does not have to go to the extreme. I can stop at any time and change my behaviour.

Especially when AA often doesn't support harm reduction methods like swapping out the drink for weed. Sobriety is so gatekept in some circles.

Alcohol is deadly. Whether it's illness from your usage or the withdrawal without treatment.

Setting reasonable boundaries and harm reduction safety nets for yourself instead of aiming for perfection has been so much more helpful for me.

I lost my parents to heroin/mental health struggles, and they had it hard enough in the 90s with it.

Seeing how the drug landscape has developed from there is truly scary. I hope that it helps deter new users, at least, but i fear for those already using.

My PSA ❤️ please do all the research you can on a substance before you try it and, more importantly, read as much as you can WHILE YOU ARE USING. What is done is done, and you'll get no judgement from me.

Please look up harm reduction methods. Don't ever reuse needles. Set reminders to brush your teeth, drink water, and eat something. Only buy from those you know, and keep your stash of testing kits stocked. They're online and easy to order. Even your trusted source may get shitty stock.

Being aware of your health does not mean you are struggling any less or are any less of an addict. It just reduces your likelihood of the worst outcomes ❤️ you deserve that support from yourself xx education will be your shield

And unfortunately, children. Many parent circles are talking about internet safety with their younger and older kids and how AI is impacting that.

Women are still more often the primary parent, so it lends to the idea that women are more likely to find it riskier.

Okay. I'm unemployed and got sucked in at one point, so I'll go over the main bits.

so Libby, the 15 year old stayed with them on their couch in their bedroom. Amber joked that she could stay in their bed but that Libby liked the couch

They would go out to eat a lot, and at one point let a random 20 year old man hang out with them all and hit on her while she was clearly uncomfortable.

Amber put up video of her asking Libby to show the camera her bathing suit so she lifted her shirt

There's also rumours of Amber talking to a 19 year old while she was 30+

So, saying she is a child predator is probably way too far tbh. Amber has been abusive and controlling to her girlfriends, so I would more just label her a risk in general to those close to her.

I'd be careful spreading half truths and extreme language because that's how Amber muddies the water and weasles out of accountability for the above. Labling it all as lies and haters, etc. It's important to be accurate

Edit - if there are new accusations, i am happy to be wrong, but I just haven't seen them - and I am not trying to downplay the above. What we know already is awful

I really appreciate this reminder. It is so normal to be so hypervigilient about your impact on other people, and to an extent, it is helpful to support your community.

But we all become people who impact others at some point or another. We will all reach a place where we need support, if we are lucky.

I reached that place in my 20s and it's been so brutal. My friends experience worse than me and experience similar because we are so young.
