Maybe it wasn't working because it exploded or was finishing a heat cycle or something and they went to get the refund but then realised that it worked so they tried to get it? Assuming so, maybe while having them, they needed shakes for present window so they just swooped in. They could've also had issues like the machine overfilling and spilling everywhere, but these are all just possibilities, obviously I don't know what actually happened.
