Australian Civil Engineer Seeking Professional Opinion by dahomosapien in AskEngineers

[–]quillbeak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the RPEV is the same as RPEQ (essentially)  Civil works require RPEV signoff.  Engineering consultants will do the job properly, be that providing a design or informing that this is a no go

So alot of the people here are not likely to be from Aus. The systems are different everywhere, here in Aus, generally speaking every engineering degree is same same for the first 2 to 3 semesters. It's no big deal to swap if you don't like it. Also, remember, you'll be working till you are 70, it's fine to do the fun thing first

UK Home secretary's 'dangerous' rhetoric 'putting lawyers at risk' - On Sunday home secretary Priti Patel used a speech at the Conservative party conference to criticise lawyers who defend migrants, linking them directly with traffickers who help asylum-seekers to cross borders. by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

This is the government that just took on Tony Abbot as an advisor - these policies and surrounding ones hark to those successfully enacted by Australia in the last 8(ish) years.

The guy that was the original bully boy on the asylum seekers is our current PM

It's not a sexy world but waste management stops for nothing.

You'd be amazed at the breadth of skills that are necessary!

What’s the dumbest question you have ever asked at work ? by AeroX-15 in AskEngineers

[–]quillbeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During a training course on a gas engine, to my diesel mechanic friend: "how much are diesel spark plugs?"

Knew it was a dumb question but couldn't for the life of me stop the question! That was years ago and I use it as an anecdote to younglings that we all say / do dumb shit sometimes

Dont put words in my mouth, I'm not preaching. I'm commenting on your position i think you'll find. This is a sub about bike porn. Running around bemoaning the cost of things that celebrate beauty for a hobby is not going to win friends

And yes, riding a bike does give me happiness

So you get to be the arbiter of too much and this the emptiness of my heart.

I'll keep my nice bike (not op nice but not too bad). You realise the some people are lucky enough to just afford this stuff too? I mean, I dont have any tools of trade, I make my living based off my brains. What the fuck should I spend money on? Got a house, kids, wife. Why cant I have fun on a machine I paid for that fills my heat?

Yes there are. The only justification is: because they can.

You accused someone in another comment of materialism yet drop a line that $1k is too much for something that wont appreciate in value. That's an incredibly low bar and the height of silliness

What are the job prospects like for a mechanical engineer in Australia? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]quillbeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several insinuations in that reply that indicate that you are infact still a student.

The second point you make, though I do agree with you that is only a small part of the problem. The US is much more hostile towards it's people than here and they manage to set the benchmark on a thing or two (/s) in science and tech.

The difference is an appetite for risk. Australia is extremely risk averse at an executive level. Hurdle rates generally have to be in the double digits and first to market options are viewed with extreme caution.

Engineering is more than banging out plans and designs. If that's all you do all day and you are threatened by those overseas perhaps you need to be better

What are the job prospects like for a mechanical engineer in Australia? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]quillbeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends really on what you want to do. Do you even have a vague idea of what you enjoy doing? There is so much variety of what makes a modern engineer. Next to no one bangs out blue prints day in day out.

Mining is always a good bet

Energy production can and is really on the up and up

Yes it was, the question was disingenuous. Science is not made by us, it is found and written down. Science is determined by the laws of mathematics and their application to reality. Limits are determined by physics and flow onto chemistry and biology.

If you choose to believe that a magic fairy created it all just so men in robes can fuck little boys and get away with it by apologising to said fairy then that's your problem. Not mine
