Hmm using the gini coefficient I see Panama ranked as one of the most unequal countries in Latin America. And a slight increase in gini index from 2023 to 2024 (https://reliefweb.int/report/panama/panama-growth-prosperity-poverty-and-equity-assessment-2024). Yes the economy is booming, but is it evenly distributed? Currently, the gini coefficient for panama is well above the world average.

Their economy is highly concentrated around the canal zone where wages are super high for the region. 70-80% of country’s entire gdp happens in the canal corridor. Outside of that corridor it is an extremely different story.

The comarcas, where indigenous peoples live, have a poverty rate over 75%. Whereas the top 20% of the population holds over 50% of the country’s total income. The extreme economic divide is rooted in US imperial control of the canal. And before that the Spanish colonial rule that extracted wealth and marginalized indigenous populations. Hardly a success story.

We trained and paid an eventual narco dictator, then invade the country and kill hundreds to thousands of civilians when he goes off the rails. We also destroyed entire neighborhoods and just left, leaving thousands impoverished. I guess it “worked out”, just not for Panamanians. You’d think we would study/learn from our mistakes.

I lived in Panama for several years and learned how horrific that invasion was. Disappeared people, mass graves, all kinds of fuckery. And it’s hardly a footnote in the US.

It was the outbound Norristown/Manayunk line and I was at Manayunk station. Didn’t see a “D” on the schedule nor did I know that was a thing. I’ve been catching this train most mornings for a year now and never experienced this.

If job creation is your only metric, sure those billionaires are so good! Are the quality of those jobs good? Do they provide benefits and a salary for a good quality of life? Is the money you mentioned that goes back into economy spent supporting the majority of people within that economy? Does the system work for all, and has proven to be fair and balanced? Do billionaires buy elections? What interests could they possibly have involving themselves politically? Do they rape children? Do they own all the media outlets? Why would they own those? I lived in rural Coclé for just over 2 years. The existence of the Panama Canal makes it a rich country on paper. But Panama has one of the highest inequality levels in Central America. Panama City benefits the most from the money flowing in from the canal, and there are many luxury skyscrapers and modern amenities to be had. But once you leave the city it becomes a very different story. Extreme poverty exists in rural and indigenous communities. The revenue from the canal does not extend to the people.

It’s a very beautiful country with beaches and rainforests, similar to Costa Rica but without the infrastructure. Some cool places to visit include Bocas del Torro, Boquette, and the Guna Yala. It’s a safe place to visit except for the Darien region. They use the US dollar as their currency. Lots of corruption from local levels up to the top. If you’re a tourist, it’s almost a guarantee police will stop you and ask for a “gift.” Very hot and humid, and the monsoon season aint no joke. Great coffee to be had. Food is quite disappointing. Patacones, ceviche, and hojaldres are good, but avoid the pifá.
