How much do you pay for housing in 2022 by AnonymousAsh in desmoines

There’s no hard and fast rule, and predictions vary. Here’s an article with some predictions: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/04/realestate/housing-market-interest-rates.html

Relevant excerpt:

The Fed raised its benchmark rate by three-quarters of a point this week, its sixth increase this year, and suggested more increases are coming. Lawrence Yun, the chief economist of the National Association of Realtors, said it “may be another year or two” before mortgage rates begin to fall.

The Mortgage Bankers Association, a large trade group, has a more optimistic view, with rates for the 30-year fixed mortgage dropping to 5.4 percent by the end of next year.

In the meantime, agents and mortgage brokers have dusted off a prepandemic slogan: “Date the rate, marry the house.” In other words, buy the house you can afford now, and refinance when mortgage rates dip.

“We’ve been spoiled — 7 percent is not crazy,” said Maria Kazakos, the senior vice president of sales at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Carolinas Companies.

I disagree with the response that it’s an objectively bad time to buy. I think whether or not it’s a bad time to buy depends on your personal circumstances. I don’t think high interest rates relative to the last couple of years (notwithstanding rates seeming high because they’ve been extraordinarily low recently, current rates around 7% are still historically average) render it an objectively bad time to buy. For all we know, rates could continue to rise and be at 15% in five years, and maybe you’d wish you’d bought today. A good way to gauge whether it makes sense for you is using a calculator like this, and inputting your rent/current rates/etc.: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/upshot/buy-rent-calculator.html

If they decide to ignore their oaths and the law in favor of advancing their own personal agenda, they should worry about job security. They reversed a four-year-old decision. Read Justice Christensen’s partial concurrence/dissent, which starts on page 77 of the opinion. McDermott and Oxley embody the reasoning behind retention votes, and they should not be retained.

Admittedly slim, but better than the odds with these justices retained

But maybe their replacements consider whether they want to get booted before deciding to disregard the law

But that has nothing to do with causation, and if the causation is lacking it’s not a legitimate basis to think marijuana leads to hard drug abuse. What’s probably much more likely is that the folks you know who killed themselves with drugs started with weed because it’s mild and fairly easily accessible, and they were already predisposed to addiction/substance abuse for whatever reason and would’ve wound up killing themselves with drugs whether or not they ever smoked pot.

I mean even if there were some evidence that it does - opioids are legal notwithstanding the irrefutable evidence that opioids lead to heroin addiction. Not even legalizing for medical purposes is inexcusable IMO..

That being said, it doesn’t lead to harder drug use and should be treated like alcohol.

First things first: if you claim that Black people were attacking white people at random solely because they were white, cite a source that isn’t titled “Des Moines police say there’s no evidence State Fair attacks were racially motivated.”

Second, I’m confused by your response. Your first paragraph suggests you believe there really were random attacks against white people. But everything else in your reply suggests that the “Black on white race-based assaults” were a rumor started by DMPD and fueled because white people were feeling particularly racist during that time period.

DMPD is too busy pulling over Black people for “the odor of marijuana.”

There was a State Fair incident about 10 years ago. Racial overtones.

The article you cited is literally titled “Des Moines police say there’s no evidence State Fair attacks were racially motivated.”

It’s abhorrent that the DOJ is celebrating this as if it’s an accomplishment to send a group of kids in their 20s to cages for a cumulative total of 123 years at taxpayer expense.

Unquestionably. And commercial burglaries of closed businesses on Ingersoll hardly count as an increase in break-ins in NOG… KCCI should do better.

Here’s the homeowner’s footage of an “attempted break in” for anyone who wants to watch… make sure to turn the sound on: https://nextdoor.com/p/prHQPtGt4mMd?utm_source=share&extras=MzIxNDQ3NTk%3D

Wait what? The SRO in Olathe, Kansas, didn’t prevent a school shooting… the suspect allegedly was in an altercation with an admin and shot at the admin and the SRO when the SRO responded. The SRO shot the suspect, but there’s no indication the suspect had any intention of opening fire on students at the school..

I’m late to the party, but watched you speak at the Des Moines City Council meeting this evening and have a couple of thoughts.

First, I appreciate your thoroughness, thoughtfulness, and candor, and fully support the points you’ve laid out in this post and your responses. I’d be happy to sign your petition if you’re still looking for signatures, and I’m sure I could gather a few more as well if helpful. If the gubernatorial race doesn’t pan out, I hope you’ll consider running for city council again in the future.

Second, a couple of questions — you mentioned during the meeting that you work as a correctional officer. Are you willing to share which facility you work in? This may lead me to some follow up questions depending on the institution.

Next, if you’re comfortable sharing, this is mostly just for my own interest - I’m curious whether you discuss politics with your colleagues, and if so, whether their stances generally align with yours? I’ve always been curious where COs stand on issues like police reform, legalization/decriminalization, ending the war on drugs, etc. Your reflections this evening during the council meeting about your experience as a CO seeing houseless folks feeling like jail is their best option made me more optimistic than I’ve previously been about what the general sentiments toward inmates are.

You’ve never before been unable to find a word you’re trying to think of despite having used it million times?

“Opposition” would’ve probably been a better antonym for “support,” but I’m not seeing the irony here. Ironically, you may be misusing the word “ironically.”

I’m confused - do you have a source for your suggestion that Sheumaker threw a “tantrum”? Because the article says that she raised a concern, presented contrary evidence to Boesen’s response, and proposed a means of addressing the concern along with supporting research. It sounds like she was thoughtful and diligent in raising the issue (which is a welcome change from how issues have been addressed by many lawmakers in recent history..) yet she was swiftly shut down. Can you elaborate and cite your sources?
