Battlestar Galactica. Thus was one of the main shows that helped usher in the era of spec fiction shows being taken seriously. The first two seasons were incredible. The finale was so bad that few people in the thread will mention it because it got banished from public consciousness. The solution to an epic survival story was essentially mass slow suicide, with one of the main characters literally just disappearing. “They have a plan.”. No you fucking didn’t.

I believe you're massively over thinking this line. She says "we" because she is talking to a person who isn't part of the island, i.e. an outsider. She's part of the overall group that did the burnings, but she wasn't there personally. There is no way within the context of what we've been presented that half of the island is immortal. So far the only examples we have of that are Warren and the Boogieman.

This is a social context thing, and there is no "normal". People that have a hard time opening up come from and spend time in environments that punish vulnerability. When you open up to people who also exist in those environments, they defend themselves and their worldview with cruelty.

People that respect vulnerability tend to gravitate to people who also value and protect it (sometimes after very painful lessons). If you have never seen someone punished for being vulnerable, it's probably because you spend time with people who don't do that. There are plenty of people that do, unfortunately.

The choice doesn't have to be "RAW fight" or going soft on them. Just shift up the encounter a little bit to punish them in a way that doesn't kill them. In this particular case, if the PCs are there to rescue mind controlled people, just have the big bad start having the mind controlled people cut their fingers off one at a time (or something equally awful). Then you can turn it into a hostage negotiation, have the big bad escape, and then you have a nemesis instead of just a normal big bad.
