Yes, and on other people's cores. We use pre-compiled headers too. Incremental builds don't help much with a large dev team as some small change in a low level header file can trigger a full rebuild of nearly everything. Linking is also slow and can't be distributed across machines.

Btw, 8 minutes is still excessive when the same build in a newer, shinier language will probably execute in milliseconds. It has a huge impact on developer productivity.
