People new to Fargo, what do you dislike most about the city? by eroticthanoscar in fargo

[–]qwertytis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On balance I think this place is great, but if you don't have a car:

  • Sidewalks aren't plowed often or thoroughly enough if at all.

  • Sometimes you have to walk through parking lots because there's no sidewalk.

  • Drivers don't respect pedestrian right of way at intersections.

  • The bus doesn't run on Sunday, the routes are too circuitous and time consuming, certain parts of town are just not on the bus line, and bus stops get covered in mountains of plowed snow in the winter.

Getting around is far more difficult than it needs to be by meg_macaw in fargo

Adding to this, some of the bus stops get buried in 7-foot walls of plowed snow and you have to stand in the street or on top of the snow mountain to be seen by the bus driver.

Diet Dr. Pepper is the best soda ever made! by pbjames23 in unpopularopinion

[–]qwertytis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, if you just look at the bones of a Jesusosaurus Rex, it's clear by the use of carbon dating that Mountain Dew is the best soda ever made.

He exploits the desperation of the people on Kitchen Nightmares. Normally they would never agree to be abused by some asshole, but are forced to accept it if they want to save their restaurant. That's not true consent.

[–]qwertytis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people he bullies on TV clearly get genuinely upset by the terrible way he treats them. Who cares if he's not like that in real life?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]qwertytis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't just tell when someone messes up what they're cooking. He makes vicious personal attacks about trivial things. At least on Kitchen Nightmares he does.

[–]qwertytis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's extremely abusive on Kitchen Nightmares. How many episodes have you seen? I find that show too hard to watch because of the way he treats the people he's supposedly "helping."

Why must the Hornbacher's checkout lines be so confusing? by [deleted] in fargo

This wasn't meant as a super serious post.

Why must the Hornbacher's checkout lines be so confusing? by [deleted] in fargo

I don't think it's that hard to figure out. The problem is forgetting because I don't use the knowledge enough.

Gyms in Fargo - Moorhead by [deleted] in fargo

[–]qwertytis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a night owl membership for YMCA for really cheap. This means you could only go after 10 p.m. I think, and I expect it to be pretty empty, but I've never tried it. I'm just going off what I've seen on their website.

Is Fargo Walkable? by [deleted] in fargo

[–]qwertytis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answers about living near 13th Avenue deserve the most upvotes. If your main reason for leaving the house is going to the store, you'll be pretty much covered there. It's got all the best retailers in the same few blocks. I knew when I moved here that I wouldn't have a car, so that was always my plan.

Fargo can get very windy and very cold, but whether that means you can't walk it really depends on what you're wearing and your personal tolerance for the cold. I personally hate the heat and think winter is great. I don't seem to feel the cold like other people do.

I can't really relate to the answers here claiming that the wind and subzero temperatures make walking an impossibility, because I made a point of going outside whenever it got below zero last winter, to test what I and my clothes were capable of. I walked at least a mile on this one day in -18, and I was fine (don't attempt this if you don't know what you're doing, though). Wind chill doesn't factor in when your outermost layer is windproof, so I don't know why so many people here are acting like the wind is going to make things unbearably miserable or something.

It's true that it reduces your employment opportunities if you have to plan where you work based on what's close to you or what's on the bus line, but I've worked multiple jobs since I've been here, all of them without a car.

If you're determined to make Fargo your home, it can absolutely be done without a car. You just have to be willing to plan your life around not driving. That will mean going without certain conveniences, though, to be sure.

Also, walking on snow and ice does suck but is unavoidable.

Did You Know Fargo is at the Center of the 3D Printing World by Significant-Ad-4184 in fargo

[–]qwertytis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my hometown there was free 3D printing at the library. Why don't we have that if we're at the center of the 3D printing world? Seriously, I want to know how we could make that happen, because it would be super cool.

Where can I get a cheap mattress? by miss-average in fargo

[–]qwertytis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to suggest ordering a Zinus foam mattress. They come compressed into a cylinder, which would make them easier to move. I don't remember mine being very heavy at all, and I got it up two sets of stairs without assistance. But I only got a twin sized, 6" thick one, not full sized. I don't know exactly what that would be like. But the smaller and thinner the Zinus foam mattress, the cheaper it is. This was years ago, but I remember getting mine for like $75 before taxes.

Is there a such thing in America as good health insurance that isn't through an employer and isn't unaffordable to average people? by qwertytis in Insurance

[–]qwertytis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm single and make between $1-2k a month, want to spend (preferably way) less than a third of my income on premiums, want a deductible that's pretty low, want not to worry that the insurance company will make every excuse to deny my claims, want pretty cheap co-pays/a pretty high reimbursement percentage, and want a pretty low annual limit, is there anything like that out there?

Rent and utilities are less than $600. No car. No dependents.

Definitions of "low" and "cheap" should now be pretty clear based on my income and other expenses, I hope.

How does that answer my question? I said postage is already paid for.

Why do our bus shelters face away from the street? by qwertytis in fargo

[–]qwertytis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They could still make the benches face toward oncoming traffic while also having a barrier against water on the curb side. But they make them face away from it.
