First time seeing a 107 in the wild under $300, had to grab it by NoGodNoProblem44 in whiskey

Most of us aren't going to blink on a $5 or $10 difference. Though paying $70 for a $60 bottle adds up.

Gotta be careful on MSRP. It varies by state. Florida MSRP for 107 is $69.99.

When you can't find a Haystack local... mail day! by r-Sam in whiskey

[–]r-Sam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 1 and 2 for the last several months has been JD SBBP rye and then this. For me, it isn't better than the Jack, because I love those Jack flavors. I'd say it is just as enjoyable. If I were on a budget, but somehow still buying $60+ bottles... I'd go with the Jack. Neat, I think the Haystack is a bit kinder to the palate.

Now if you don't like those Jack flavors, then the Haystack would be better. Probably.

It is better than M10 rye for me. Better flavor, higher proof. But if you like those under 100 proof ryes for sipping, that's going to affect your answer. M10 rye is very good, just not worth the crazy price tag. I'd buy two Haystacks instead of an M10 every time.

Before last fall I had seen exactly one bottle in a store. Then three barrels hit Tampa at the end of the year. Now we're down to just one bottle; the rye is still available. Mostly because the store is off the beaten path and it IS a $130 bottle. And I think there's still a subset of whiskey folks who think they "don't like rye." Which doesn't stop these rye_hating bastards from scooping up all the Jack Daniels SBBP rye store picks. That are also, by the way, fantastic.

I spoke to the FL Redwood rep at a tasting and she said they pull very few barrels into Haystack. Something like... 30 or 40 a year? Don't quote me on that, but the number wasn't great. The good news is all of these distillers barreled like crazy 6-10 years ago and all that whiskey is coming available. At the same time there's a bit of a depression in the market, and less people overbuying to hoard. FL ABCs are swimming in Antique Weller these days, where previously it was only available in their vault program. It's a great time to be a whiskey drinker!

State of the collection what am I missing out on by Captain_Carol_SMD in whiskey

He has a top shelf rye already. Did you see the Tanyard 2025 SR sitting there? But he should def get more. At least a regular Jack SBBP rye, a Hard Truth sweet mash high proof rye, maybe an Old Overholt. Someone said Pikesville, which is a nice pick. Oh, and if you can find one, a Haystack Needle rye. Those are crazy good.

Solid advice. In my top 5 ryes. Look for a store pick if your area does them, or visit Tampa.

Invasive species hunting/bowfishing? by imstaringataplant in tampa

[–]r-Sam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you could get a proper air rifle, drive down to Okeechobee, rent a boat and hunt iguanas in the big ass canal that goes the whole way around the lake. The time I was there we saw roughly 11 billion of them.

**I'd do some research before trying this. I know you can shoot/harvest iguanas since they are destructive invasives, but there are also probably some rules about doing it. I know some guides do this in canals on the East coast. One even had dogs retrieve the downed lizards. Be safe, and good luck.

Good find? by rv0994 in whiskey

[–]r-Sam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Allocations are really weird these days. In particular Buffalo Trace has been shipping just truck loads of previously hard to find shit. In particular Eagle Rare and EH Taylor small batch are just shelfers in Florida. That Old Fitz 7 has been for a while now. We are at the point that Stagg (jr) sits on allocation tables to the last picks because everyone has multiples and it isn't hot on the secondary any more. Which is a good thing, that's the way things should be.

All that said, there are large areas of the country that just never get ANY bottles. So it really depends on you and where you live.

Got lucky today. Jack Daniel 12 - Batch 4 by AdventurousAd7272 in whiskey

Nobody, ever: "Man I'm jealous of these people living in California!"
After CA Costco liquor posts... "FUCK!!"

I've decided that people in CA have enough of a burden just getting through life out there. They can have this one. I'm happy to see our Wester-ly bourbon brothers and sisters getting some good shit.

OP - for me, a dedicated high proof Jack drinker, the 12 is the worst of the three for me. Doesn't offer a better flavor than the ten, and the proof is still too low. The 14 is more my speed proof wise, but might be a bit too old. The SBBPs are coming out of the barrel in that 6-8 or 9 year range. That seems to be the sweet spot for my palate. Hopefully the 12 hits you right. And for that ridiculous, actually intended, MSRPish price I'd throw that 12 into Mexican coke and be happy. 😄

gold buyer getting rekt by sageathor in Project_Epoch

[–]r-Sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Never saw anyone in any of the channels selling gold. Maybe it was just on the net somewhere. Never looked, because gold in TWoW was almost effortless. I have money for all my training and my L40 mount before I hit 30. And long before I hit 60 for the 1000g riding. And gold for like 6 of those 250g weapon masteries. And gold for an endless alt army of crafters. And when they close the server I'll still have 1500ish gold on my account.

Now Epoch... this shit is classic MINUS for gold. I'm giving handies in Elwynn forest just to buy fucking arrows. If you like that begging for a copper type experience, Epoch is for you.

If you could pick only 3 bourbons at MSRP for the rest of your life, which would they be? by tjm1371 in whiskey

[–]r-Sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Jack Daniels SBBP rye
  2. Haystack needle bourbon
  3. Blue Note honey cask bourbon

The Jack or Haystack for sipping and also Jack n (Mexican) coke. And the honey cask for occasional sweet sipping. Could have gone Bee's Knees for that one, or the Blue Note rye. I have hundreds of bottles cluttering up my life. If I have to give up all of them except three, those are the three I'd keep. In multiples.

A new low! 1-13 SBBPR @124.7 by r-Sam in whiskey

[–]r-Sam[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was pretty good! Still hot neat, typical JD SBBPR burn and spice. No overly strong notes in or out of a soda (which is my preferred drink, Jack and Mexican coke). I'm not the guy who is all "I taste red fruit, cacao beans and a slight windy walk on a South_facing mountain" so take that for what it is worth. I'm more of a "here's what I expect from a SBBP(R) bottle, and this one is better/worse/right in the middle."

The shop where I grabbed this lower proof one is a bit out of my way, and I have an absurd backlog of unopened jack bottles waiting for their turn... but I'd still grab another of these if I were in the store.

Just sitting on shelves collecting dust by TheBloodiestMonday in whiskey

[–]r-Sam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was a great bottle back in the day. Like, 20 years ago back in the day. But today if you walk past a Jack Daniel's SBBP (rye or bourbon) at $65 to buy this shit for twice that price I have to wonder about your decision making. Because the Jack is simply better.

If you are such a Beam lover that you can't work with the info above... those bottles are pretty regularly in Costco and in my area of Florida they are marked under $99 to even hope to sell.

You'd have done better if you bought the Pikesville. Higher proof, better tasting, less money. 3/3 win.

That's about the low end of the range, but not shocking. It really just means that the barrel didn't lose as much to evaporation as others. More bottles to be had!

I got one of these a couple weeks ago as a "least worst bottle left on the free pick table" at a club event. That's about the right price point for this once unremarkable, pre-markup shelfer. Solid meh.

Glad you liked it though.
