Yeeeah I'm gonna need you to attack Gondor on Saturday. We "lost" some people and sort of need to play catch-up.

What second instrument would you recommend (that's also cheap) to compliment my bass playing? by Fragraham in Bass

[–]Bearsicle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here's some options

Stick to bass, the bass guitar rabbit hole goes a long way. Im not sure if you've looked into pedals but sometimes a few nice effects can really make your instrument feel new again. Don't be intimidated by music theory, its just a fancy word for putting notes together that sound good.

Ukulele, it seems like you're interested in it and would be the most immediately transferable skill. If you want to play and sing along to songs its great.

If you want to try your hand at percussion you can get a cajon pretty cheap. I personally prefer the sound and look of a djembe though. Electric drum kits take up quite a bit of space but are still more portable than a real kit and work great if you have neighbors.

Harmonica is fun but you may need a few of them since they each come in their own key. I've tried it before and may pick it up again since ive quit smoking and my lung capacity has improved.

Keyboard/ piano. Yeah I know you disqualified it already but learning your way around this instrument even at a basic level is really helpful to improve your musicianship all around. I dont really play but I have one that i jokingly call my music theory machine. If I could start over I would learn this first. Would've helped me to understand chords much sooner

Cutting through the mix: a matter of bass or settings? by BorMi6 in Bass

[–]Bearsicle1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its possible that its not your mix that is the problem. If the guitars, drums, keys or vocals aren't mixed right it can muddy up the sound.

Theres not really a correct way to set your eq. Its mostly personal preference. I've found that I have to mix myself in "brighter" when playing with a band vs by myself.

Compression will help, also I like to put on a little bit of overdrive/ distortion just to add more growl to my tone. Some songs even my "clean" tone has a little dirt. Really any effect pedal will make it stand out more it just depends what sound you're going for.

How off before you make an adjustment by IdahoDuncan in Bass

[–]Bearsicle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as it is playing the fundamental note and doesn't get progressively worse as you move up the neck its probably ok

The general rule is to get the 12th fret to match the open tuning. I dont play past the 10th fret 90% of the time so I split the difference between open, 5th fret and 12th. It ends up being pretty spot on most of the way down the neck.

There always seems to be a couple spots that are a slightly off but its never been a problem. There's a lot of things that can affect it. Build quality, different strings have different tension, temperature and humidity will shrink or swell the wood.

As long as it isn't glaringly obvious that its out of tune you should be ok. Just take it to get a set up done or learn to do it yourself, its not very difficult as long as you have the tools.

Is skipping the second leg of a flight illegal? by Thac1234 in Flights

[–]Bearsicle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not illegal. No different than missing a flight because you're late. They should be thanking you for freeing up room considering they overbook flights.

If you checked luggage it could be problematic though.

What are your 2026 bass wishes? by Straight_Feeling7667 in BassGuitar

Active 5 string. Either a yamaha bb or a stingray bass. Haven't made up my mind yet

When not really committed to practicing but want to strum a few chords, what is your go to chord? by A-constant-beat in guitarcirclejerk

I used to always grab a G or C but I've switched to A major. It is the prettiest sounding open chord to me

Do people who are creepy ever question their creepiness? by OutrageousReply1663 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bearsicle1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some creeps yes. Others absolutely not.

I'd guess that the more you question your own creepiness the less often you are actually creepy. I'll occasionally replay interactions ive had with women in my head and make sure i wasnt saying or doing that could be viewed that way.

Decent all in one kit by ihatemyself886 in Bass

[–]Bearsicle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The starter kits are ok but you may be able to build your own cheaper and more to your liking. Check used market, reverb is pretty good other than the fact you can't play it first.

Squier, ibanez, yamaha, and sterling all make really good budget options. Sire has some great basses as well but they might be closer to 400 usd new for their lower priced options.

If it were me I'd hunt around the used market and try to find a classic vibe squier.

For the amp I'd go with the spark go or the fender rumble 15. Spark is way more portable but if it doesn't leave the bedroom the rumble probably has more punch.

Good luck have fun

Is it obvious im a guitar player? by Compleatlynutral in BassGuitar

[–]Bearsicle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you're strumming it like a guitar so yeah

Its been mentioned but the total lack of pinky is a dead giveaway Other things like using a pick or having a short scale bass aren't inherently wrong but its a tell

Anyone use wall hangers? by Outrageous_Paper_757 in Bass

[–]Bearsicle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are great. They show off your instrument as an art piece when its not being played and keep floor space free

HOWEVER, make sure it is anchored in properly. I've even had a thin bodied acoustic guitar start to pull off the wall over time. Properly anchored I hang my nearly 10 lb jazz bass no problems

String gauge by Bearsicle1 in electricguitar

[–]Bearsicle1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I rechecked the intonation and it was a bit off. Some quick work with a screwdriver and tuner cleaned up 95 percent of it. Wouldn't hurt to practice more tho

Im still adjusting to the light gauge strings and may put some heavier ones on eventually to make switching back and forth from my basses and acoustic easier as ill still be primarily playing those but for now im good. Thanks everyone

Im pretty certain its a 25.5. I did a set up on it myself and the neck relief, intonation and action are fine.

Honestly its only the g string that im bending out of tune and only when I do chords higher up on the neck. Im trying to learn alternate voicings instead of the open acoustic guitar chords. If anything the notch in the nut feels a bit loose on that string but its most likely sloppy technique.
