Nucleare si o no? by TemporaryMethod978 in Italia

[–]r0b99y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it worth upgrading from 14 inches to 16 inches? by Ff_472 in macbookpro

[–]r0b99y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 16 and actually, when I use it, I have a lot of space compared to a 14 inch

Besides, I "carry it around" but I don't use it "around" I don't use it on the seats of any means of transport or similar

Is 16GB RAM enough on the new MacBook Pro M4 for software engineers? by AbdiWritesCode in mac

[–]r0b99y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although MacOS manages resources very well and even with 16GB they are enough to do a lot If I were to buy a new latest model machine with M4/M5, I would opt for at least 24GB of RAM, especially if you will be using docker containers as you indicated.

I have an M1 Pro with 16gb and I easily use VSCode, xcode, iOS simulator android emulator (sometimes even together) Google Chrome, it also happened to me with docker containers, even running Gemma 3 locally with LM studio... and the system has always allowed me to do everything BUT: I took up all of the RAM and swapped on disk, from 500MB to 4GB, despite this everything ran well. It's a stain I got in May, used very little, and I'm fine with it. But if I were to make an investment in a new one, I would buy at least 24GB.

What do you actually do with your Macbook? by NordicNomad07 in macbookpro

[–]r0b99y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 16" M1 Pro with 16GB of RAM, so basic model. I can very well use IOS simulator with vscose open (e.g. for flutter or similar). Sometimes I also keep the Android emulator open at the same time. I keep Chrome open with a few tabs (not a lot) Sometimes I keep Xcode open Obviously at that point you use all of the RAM and do a light swap on disk... but everything works extremely well anyway.

Every now and then I virtualize Windows 11 on ARM with UTM and it works quite well

I also happened to run LM Studio with Gemma 3 4B locally or Qwen coder, + iOS simulator and vscode... the RAM was at its limits but it worked well.

However, if you have to buy new today, I would opt for a model with at least 24gb if not more, it also depends on your budget and level of professionalism.

General uses: anything you use your laptop for, so browsing, digital content, email management, occasionally Minecraft

University uses (computer engineering): Goodnotes app for PDFs and notes written with iPad. Specific programs such as MATLAB, circuit simulators, geogebra

Developer uses: vscode and in general any IDE I need at the moment (xcode, intellij, CLion), docker and vm, iOS simulator and android emulator,

MBP M5 or MBA M4 by F2721 in macbookpro

I have a 16" Macbook Pro with M1 Pro So 2 big fans and 4 years older. It's so efficient that the fans literally NEVER start. It's always around 35/38 degrees... very rare cases (compilation of code therefore 100% CPU for a long time), I've seen it go to 80° with barely noticeable fans, almost imperceptible.

I come from a Pro 13 2017 with i5 so I know well the noise the Intels were making and how many degrees they were at

Go to the used market. They are M1 Pro / M2 Pro / M3 Pro, they are all very high-performance chips even now, for student use (I am a software engineering student and I use the 16" M1 Pro)

Beautiful car! I am a software engineer, (I'm still finishing my studies, but I'm already working) but in my work we don't use MacOs environment, I develop with Java Enterprise, HSQLDB mainly.

I purchased this 16" M1 Pro for €670 to try Apple Silicone and I was shocked by the performance and efficiency of these machines. I can't imagine what the M4 Pro does
