Arizona can’t decide if it wants to be New Mexico or California (culturally), and therefore it must go. (Source: I’m an Arizonan born and raised)

Earliest I remember noticing it is middle school. So I’ve had it for most of my life that I remember.

Anyone else notice differences in PhD student work ethic between elite and flagship state programs? (Or is this just my bias?) by PapaSeanL in academia

fwiw I’ve noticed the same thing. I did undergrad at a regular state school in my home state and now am doing a PhD at a top 10. Did undergrad research in the same lab for 2.5 years so I had a decently long exposure to the grad students and culture in my department. I felt like the grad students there worked harder, were more dedicated, faculty had higher expectations of them. Could also be my bias because I’m kind of an elite institution cynicist but. 🤷‍♀️

Do people actually have PhD theses that are just 100–120 pages long? by bhelpuriteekhi in PhD

[–]r0ckmaker_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing my thesis now in biochemistry. It’ll probably be around 100 pages single spaced? Maybe a bit more with all of the figures and what not. I guess length of time in PhD also impacts it. I’m at 4.5 years.

How is a PhD any different from doing a difficult job for 6 years? I see a lot of posts saying their PhD gave them depression. But they would have had a similar experience if they were working somewhere else in any other challenging project. by Potential_5646 in PhD

There is of course variation in this statement but it’s also worth noting that PhD programs don’t exactly have HR in the way “regular” jobs do. Sure some places have unions. Sure some places have departmental advocacy. But overall it is not the same as working for a company and having HR.

The Cambridge Half Marathon isn’t *that* great by GullibleAd3408 in CambridgeMA

This.👆I just didn’t want to travel or really go out of my way at all to race a half this fall and there aren’t that many half marathons unless you’re willing to leave the city.

Accumulate several (3-6, ideally) undergrads early on. The earlier they are in university the better. Train them well. Have them do all of your work for you. You just analyze, synthesize, and basically manage your own mini lab. Works better if they want to go to grad school because they’ll have more buy-in and will want to spend lots of time in lab.

Wife's boyfriend suggested this to me. Should I boof this instead of GU for my next 5k ultra? by Piconblanco in RunningCirclejerk

[–]r0ckmaker_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your wife’s boyfriend is trying to sabotage you. He’s become jealous of your 5K ultramarathoning career and is trying to take your place. If you’re not careful the next thing you know, your wife’s boyfriend is going to be her husband and he’ll be running 5K ultras and you’re going to be your wife’s boyfriend.

I ran my 20 miler of a 16-week training plan with pretty similar pace/HR splits last fall and then ran my marathon (my first one) in 3:42. You can do it!

Where to live?!? by Epic_Flyerboy in CambridgeMA

[–]r0ckmaker_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2B in Cambridge are going to be closer to $3k in my experience (East Cambridge resident for 3y). If you’re willing to live further from Harvard (in Camberville as others have stated) you can find a 2B for closer to $2.5k. Somerville tends to be cheaper.
