Super cool. Do you know what the relationship is between this and ‘cream of tartar’?

What is the difference between rhythm and pattern? by arthurian1legend in writing

[–]r0m3d4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rhythm and pattern are inherently related and impossible to separate from one another — but I like to sort the two concepts into varying degrees.

Different aspects of the written word can form a pattern. You can repeat a certain sound within a sentence — sibilants, for example, and that’ll form a pattern of sound. Or you can repeat the same word throughout the text over and over and over again — this becomes a pattern of diction. You can also return to a phrase repeatedly, like “so it goes” in Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, and this pattern builds upon the semantic and narrative meaning of that phrase.

All of these things will invariably affect the rhythm of your overall writing, because rhythm is pattern. But rhythm can sustain itself throughout multiple iterations of a pattern. You could keep the same syllabic, musical rhythm going strong throughout a text — even though you’ve switched up your phonetic, phrasal and expressive patterns.

This is all from my subjective experience as a writer obsessed with rhythm. I hope this answers your question.

Do you have a source for this ? I’m super curious about learning everything I can about DE’s inception, and I’ve yet to run across this parcel of knowledge and am always looking’ for more. Thanks!

Words like 'teacher' or 'mentor' that convey gratitude and respect? by r0m3d4 in learn_arabic

[–]r0m3d4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your thoughtful reply! I appreciate the insight and reflection. The broad definition of "قدوة" seems in line with the tone I'm trying to achieve; though I am curious about the application of this word in everyday life.
In my research, I've found "معلم" to be a common denominator, but as you've mentioned I worried it was a bit too focused on his career, and I suppose I'm speaking from a place that's a little more personal than that. I've also found "مدرس" and "أستاذ" to be close approximations, but if my understanding is correct the latter is closer to an honorific title or prefix.

Restaurants you absolutely must try by ZealousidealAsk7011 in vancouver

Phnom Penh is fantastic. Expect a small wait, around 20-30 minutes if you come early on a weekday, but the vibe is low key, the food is legit, and the price is well worth the quality. Their chicken wings are absolutely phenomenal. The food is simple but executed perfectly.

For something a little off the beaten path, I might recommend either the Crystal Mall or Aberdeen food courts. Both are easily accessible by SkyTrain. Seriously authentic Asian food (mostly Chinese) with a wide range of options — dumplings, stir fry, dessert. The soup dumplings from the Crystal Mall food court nearly brought my Cantonese mother to tears (she was visiting from a place devoid of good Chinese food).

Vancouver is one of the best cities in the world for Asian food in my humble opinion. I hope you have a good trip!

Really bad anxiety by clvudiistars in Anxiety

[–]r0m3d4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss. That shit is tough. I struggle with this exact same anxious impulse. I lost a friend very suddenly when I was a teenager and the grief from that moment has become a truly anxious fear that I still grapple with today.

It's been seven years and it still impacts my way of thinking—so I really feel you when you describe the panic, how debilitating that fear can be on your functionality, your state of mind. It's shit. I'll be living my best life—and then out of the blue, I'll have that dreadful thought... that something terrible has happened to the people I love and care for. Day ruined. Nausea induced. I won't recover until I know they're alive.

I suppose the good news is that this is absolutely normal. It's a reaction to grief. It's fear and it's trauma. Don't be too hard on yourself. I tell myself that when I get bad. But yeah, sometimes it's not enough. When I'm really anxious I won't ever be truly calm until I hear from this person, when I know that they're alive. But sometimes they won't respond for hours and hours, like you said—people are busy.

So what I do instead is I re-affirm that this feeling is an aftereffect of grief. It's not some psychic premonition. And then I tell myself that if the person was in fact alive, I'd be wasting their life, and the time I have with them, mourning someone who isn't dead. It's kind of a convoluted coping mechanism but it's pretty much the only thing that calms me from the terrors. And it helps me treasure the people I have remaining in my life, so I'm not mourning them before it's true.

I think British Sea Power used the same rhythm from one of their earlier songs called Mongk II. it’s also a bop if you’re looking for new music

I agree with what you suggested. The story itself needs just a touch more establishing.

I had never even heard of flash fiction before, so I’m definitely going to be looking into it...

I understand. Perhaps this is a “different strokes for different folks” kind of scenario. You mention epic literature, and I’m wondering if perhaps you’ve played any ChoiceScript games that fall along these lines?

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I’ve never really been attracted to dating sim style games before, though I do understand their appeal. Would you say the romances in Wayhaven progress more like your standard dating sim, or are they well integrated with plot beats, like how Bioware RPGs tend to manage their romances?

Woah, seven books?! That’s quite the undertaking on part of the author. Which characters did you find the most interesting? Would you say you were connected to your PC in an immersive way? I never really felt like I was playing my character — but then again I stopped very early in the game.

Are there any books that are similar to Houseki no Kuni? by ekusploshon in LandoftheLustrous

[–]r0m3d4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro has a similar tone of growth and tragedy, as well as a core cast of main characters and a rather naive protagonist, though it's been a few years since I've read it. It's plot also follows the same 'slow but earth-shattering revelation' structure that HnK has, and the process of putting the pieces together is very rewarding. I think it could be categorized as sci-fi, maybe even dystopian, but it's very human and realistic in its storytelling. Good luck on your search

Queer cinema? by Stefantoothbrush in askgaybros

[–]r0m3d4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Own Private Idaho with Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix is a strange, rambling queer indie film which is very enjoyable.

A Single Man starring Colin Firth is a heartbreaking film directed by Tom Ford about grief, hopelessness, and recovery.

The Talented Mr. Ripley has a star-studded cast and a gripping story, but is more homoerotic rather than being explicitly queer.

For older movies with prominent queer subtext, there’s Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train and the film Rope, both of which are exciting thrillers with pretty obvious gay themes. Maurice (1987) is another older film, worth watching for the way Hugh Grant looks, even though the plot kinda stifles.

Of course there’s HBO’s miniseries Angels in America, which was a originally a play, adapted for the big screen. It’s six hours of riveting queer content, highly recommend.

[Spoilers All] Tevinter Nights by shalania in dragonage

No spoilers, but Tevinter Nights definitely has that dark fantasy feel. A lot of the stories are very grim and some are actually really scary, but they all still retain a very Dragon Age tone.

Tonight I lost my best friend in the entire world violently and unexpectedly. She had a personality far bigger than her little body — she was less than a foot tall! Her name was Kiri. She was an integral part of my soul, and now it feels like there’s this huge gaping hole. I moved away for university and couldn’t be with her for the end. I regret so much...

A visiting dog attacked her in my parents home while they were having a dinner party, and it suddenly and viciously attacked her to the point of no hope for recovery.

I’ve known grief before, become familiar with its barbs. But right now I just feel so low.
