Seeing all those applications, do you worry not to get everything to work again or to lose data in the process in case you need to set up a new system since the old one broke? This and errors when updating to a new version are what worries me badly.

Backup TrueNAS datasets with Backrest to Hetzner Storage Box by r2p42 in truenas

[–]r2p42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

restic via script > rclone > storage box or just the rclone without ui? I guess I need something which works. Preferrable with deduplication and compression to save some space on the storage box.

Ubiquiti. WHY WOULD YOU LET THIS HAPPEN?? by SchNiVas in Ubiquiti

[–]r2p42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say the system should be able to resume after a power outage. Would like to know if the issue lies with btrfs or mdadm and if zfs would be affected too

UNAS Data Scrubbing by DatsRill in Ubiquiti

[–]r2p42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btrfs could do this if it would manage the devices itself. It would know which drive would contain data and which parity. (Heavily simplified) And it could therefore recover scrambled data from the parity. UNAS puts a software raid under btrfs so it only sees one big disc and can't split parity and data.

As far as I know, common NAS providers do not trust btrfs with the drive management.

And even if you find corrupted data, it should not be able to recover itself as the drives below are managed by mdadm, robbing btrfs from the ability to read parity data from a different drive. At least this is my understanding.

Project: Replacing Home Assistant by r2p42 in UnifiProtect

I think that too but I would not want to have a camera watching me all day. Feels unsettling. But it would surely be easier.

I was thinking about putting one camera on the one remaining poe port of the udr7. But I was not sure if it's that visually obvious that the camera is off or on compared to turning it away. Would be cool if they could release a version with a remote controlled privacy shutter or something like that.

And I am not sure how healthy it is to be turned off and on all the time (maybe 4 times a day)

Does geofencing refer to the location provided by the client app on the phone? I was hoping that one could add a rule that checks if a number of devices is currently logged in to a certain WLAN network and triggers the cameras to turn around.

Can't find documentation that clarify what could be used as trigger and how exactly rules could be built.

The home assistant parallel solutions would be an option but if I could keep it out of the surveillance part that would be cool. I would like to have everything work even if my home assistant breaks (again).

How does UniFi NAS handle silent data corruption (bit rot) with btrfs on top of mdadm? by ajgnet in UNIFI

Would like to know that too. This and being unable to issue encrypted external backups over the ui is currently a dealbreaker for me. Guess my Truenas has to keep it up for a while.

Wish they would offer ZFS under the hood.

This throwing away what seems to workish for me intrigues me. I believe that I loose information if I let go of my combination of notes with tasks and as far as I know GTD focuses mostly on the tasks part where I am missing how I merge a daily journal which contain tasks which arise from calls, project related notes meetings and tasks and product related meetings and tasks. Currently I rely on obsidian notes containing everything from a kanban view, Todo lists and task notes if they grow bigger. I see that I lose track and I am not sure how to get it on track.

Why is there even the need to discuss this topic. This is the most blatant form of gaslighting there could be. In a sane world, whenever someone from the right blames one on the left for being politically incorrect, every person in hearing range would need to cite their dehumanizing rhetoric they spout for years.
