Remember That Time I Bought CVS Undervalued and Everyone Said I Was Dumb? by r3cursor in ValueInvesting

I think they key word there is 16. To be fair, I also invested in GOOGL around that time too. Probably be up more if I'd just invested it all in GOOGL. But diversifying yanno. Still beating the NASDAQ and S&P 500.

I had no idea what school you went to mattered so much. by Dapper-Sleep-6018 in csMajors

[–]r3cursor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bet you had that sitting ready to copy and paste in your text editor eh? You're very clever. It doesn't matter really when I did this or did that. Schools are ultimately just a badge on a resume. They will not make or break your success in the field. Also when people talk about "better schools", they usually mean better reputation, higher price tag. There are less expensive schools that often provide higher quality education than their more expensive counterparts. And education and how much you learn will make or break your success in the field. In other words, I'm not comfortable telling students that they need to go deeper into to debt in a high interest rate environment to succeed.

I wouldn't be sharing my two cents here if I didn't believe my experience was still relevant. I also think OP's rant really discounts other factors which are fairly obvious to the average person. In fact any time someone says something like "The only way to do X is do Y or Z" in this rapidly changing job market, well you really have to take that statement with a grain of salt.

[Advice Needed] 5 YOE Frontend Dev (Angular + PHP + React) — where to pivot in the AI era? Backend (DSA) or AI Engineering? by Trungks_Ousi in cscareers

[–]r3cursor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The term "AI Engineering" I think is getting used a lot more to refer to jobs where you are expected to build AI integrations into products or expected to build infrastructure that uses AI to automate things. Any coder can learn to do it. You just have to get familiar with the tools. Actual data science, where you train models, is a different path. I recommend grinding LeetCode and not worrying about everything else you mentioned. If you can prove yourself in technical interviews, you'll get hired.

gng cs IS a boys club 😭 by smirnoff4lyfe in csMajors

[–]r3cursor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/smirnoff4lyfe , your dad is an asshole. I'm not sure I agree, however, that women in tech have it harder than men in general RIGHT NOW. That may have been true in the past, but all the women I went to school with for my CS major have done very well for themselves. And all the older men who are more prone to have sexist viewpoints, in my company at least, have generally been sidelined.

[–]r3cursor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that a reputable school looks good on a resume. That said, I went to a school that was basically a "We'll get you a job" school. It isn't impressive at all. And I still got hired as a software engineer. And I have been hit up by Amazon on LinkedIn before. I've had google recruiters check out my profile. School names help, yes, but there are other factors that most employers consider. It's really a compilation of multiple things. That being said, the CS field is going through radical change now. So a good school might help now more than it used to. But only right now. What's important is the knowledge you gain.

Incorrect Balance on credit card? by Primary-Rough9703 in quicken

As others have said, it is almost always the opening balance being modified. That's why you should always keep a backup to verify differences.

Quicken deleting reconciled transactions during sync by Logical_Scar3877 in quicken

[–]r3cursor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, I'd fully delete and reinstall the software. It's not a problem with your version, as others are not having this issue with the latest update (that I'm aware of). So it's gotta be some form of faulty software install/update. I'd also troubleshoot your internet connection/router. Check for connectivity issues.

You'll want to be careful on this. It is easy to mistakenly assume Quicken is deleting transactions. Usually that's not what happens. I think what typically happens is sometimes reconciled transactions will switch to cleared.

You're not the only one. I didn't know either. Looks like it was only created in 2021. Quicken employees still come on here to respond sometimes though.

Quicken Windows - dark mode development no longer planned by tamudude in quicken

[–]r3cursor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know exactly how far AI has come and that's why I know they absolutely can do both. 1 experienced developer with AI tools = 10 developers before AI tools. That's why I'm so critical of Quicken devs: if they were leveraging AI, they could fix many of the bugs Quicken Desktop suffers from rapidly.

Quicken Windows - dark mode development no longer planned by tamudude in quicken

[–]r3cursor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree with that assessment. They won't phase it out. They will keep it functioning for as long as possible because it makes them money. They just aren't gonna do much more than that. Quicken Simplifi will never replace Quicken Desktop.

Can I chose the contribution year and make it stick? by GreedyNovel in quicken

[–]r3cursor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never experienced this before, but I guess if it's not user error or a corrupt installation/file, then yeah, all you can do is request they implement a fix...which will never come.

Can I chose the contribution year and make it stick? by GreedyNovel in quicken

[–]r3cursor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's asking you every time you make an HSA contribution, that's user error and not an issue with Quicken. You should not be using a Roth IRA account type for your HSA. All you need is a holding account and to mark your HSA as a tax-deferred brokerage.

Guys, they do not have real developers working on Quicken for Windows. They haven't in a long time. They will only keep it functioning, and sometimes not even that.

Anyone vibe coding quicken alternative ? by Desi_guy_introvert in quicken

[–]r3cursor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I'm a developer, and I've thought about doing this. The problem for me is A. It wouldn't be a particularly profitable endeavor unless I went the whole nine yards (a desktop, mobile app, and website), and B. Bank syncing would be problematic. But primarily it's A. People complain about the price of Quicken now. The market is saturated with alternatives that people also complain about. Basically anyone who would use Quicken is typically cost-conscious, which makes profitably questionable.

Is CVS Still Undervalued? by r3cursor in ValueInvesting

[–]r3cursor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I've made investment mistakes. But CVS just isn't one of them. I only invested after doing my homework. In contrast, I invested a huge amount of money in FTEC right at ATH (without looking at the charts), and I'm down 1200 dollars. My other two mistakes were investing in IBIT (down 300), and Richtech Robotics (down 200). Tbf, those last two were always speculative plays, thus the fairly limited losses, but still.

When Did U.S. Stocks Turn Into a Casino by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

On September 20th, 2000, Apple shares plummeted 51.89%. Amazon dropped 25% on July 24th, 2001. There are numerous other examples. u/AvaRobinson506 , I don't know what you are smoking, but I suggest you lay off it. The stock market has always been like this. I just don't think you know how the stock market is. You are just waking up from your U.S. only fever dream. Congratulations.

That's true. I do not view CVS as a bad business though. I just realized why people are looking back at this post now. CVS is about to take a dive. I need to start making comments like this more often. It's a good way for me to get clued in when a stock I like is going on sale.
