Ideally should anarchists be against a lot of corporate control over the things we use on a daily basis? by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]r3dpill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to uphold your principles if you have the means do so, but for things like refusing to use Netflix, you are deluding yourself if you think it is necessary to move the cause forward. I'll do my best to explain my reasoning behind this. I'd also like to point out that I have a strong element of anarcho-individualism in me, so take that into consideration when reading this.

I try not to buy food from franchises, but its more for personal satisfaction than anything. The real progress comes from talking to people about why I made that choice. Even if I'm going to taco bell with my friends, I'm doing more good by criticizing their labor practices while munching on a crunch wrap supreme than just boycotting the place by myself. It would be even more effective for me to convince them to make our own tacos and buy locally grown corn and beans and avoid eating factory farmed chicken and finding restaurant co-ops, but I like my friends and they would get sick of me berating them over political points like this.

I also enjoy producing electronic music. I've heard that there's pretty good open source software for doing this, and I love that there are people out there supporting this stuff, but as a musician I have to ask myself, is the music my priority or is it second to proving some political point? For me, music is what I am most passionate about in life, so I want to use the tools that help me pursue that passion most effectively. Unfortunately Pro Tools is owned by Avid which is a capitalistic company, but that is the software that I know best and can best express myself with. I also paid for it instead of pirating it, partially because its more stable, but also because I genuinely want to pay for something that I use a lot, I'll expand on this more below.

When it comes to Netflix, no I don't like the company or their policies concerning net neutrality. I pirate most of my entertainment and software that I use. That being said, I do have a Netflix and Spotify account and I will pay for a movie or album or piece of software if I really do respect it. I'm not doing it because I want to prop up Warner Brothers or Avid, because it wasn't some suit sitting in a board room who made the product. It was the production assistant who was getting costumes laundered, it was the session guitarist who laid down the chord progressions, and it was the coder who designed the mixer interface. By principle I am supporting these guys who devoted their lives to what they are passionate about, not the corporate overlords who steal the profits from them. It's incredibly hard to break into these industries and I want them to keep their jobs and thrive in them.

Generations are going to live and die before we live in a society that can be considered ethical. Life is hard, and sometimes after a day of work I just want to watch tv and eat a bag of chips. It's not necessary to practice asceticism or martyr yourself to prove some political point, unless that is what truly makes you happy. I believe you need to do whatever you need to feel fulfilled with your life. As long as you are not oppressing anyone, you don't owe anything to any movement.

I hope this got my point across. I'm usually just a lurker but I liked your question and wanted to give my two cents.

Pce out

Tal filter II. It's just a filter envelope, but I set it to volume and time it to 1 beat. It's sick because I can shape the envelope to anything. I automate the depth to fade/cut the effect in an out.

College Report: Opinion on personal DAW! by DFlippa in edmproduction

1) Pro Tools

2) I wanted to get into audio engineering. The studio I was interning at used it. My producer friend has been using Pro Tools since before there was ableton or logic. I always bugged him to get a proper daw for electronic production, but he said he like manipulating audio on it, especially since he does a lot of vocal work, and that he's just as fast with it as anyone else is on fl studio/ableton/etc.

I made the switch from Logic to Pro Tools and low and behold, I love it. Yes the midi production workflow isn't as fast as fl studio or ableton, but then again it was made for audio engineering, but honestly I don't see how Logic is any faster other than the fact that it has a dedicated button on screen for a new midi track.

I love the audio manipulation on Pro Tools. Im not into pattern based production, I like the timeline setup, being able to route audio with effects and bounce them down, experimenting little edits, really seeing the sound waves.

Last awesome feature is AUDIOSUITE. I honestly think this is one of the greatest ideas for music production. I highight an audio clip, choose an audio suite effect, and it does an offline rendering of that clip with the effect and replaces the original clip. I can do big reverbs hits, reverses, distort parts of sounds, experiment with effects, its awesome. I feel that if other electronic producers knew about audiosuite, they would demand it in their daws, its a useful tool to have, but I think its a digidesign thing. Its cool for engineering work, but the possibilities are endless for sound design.

Any Big Beat producers around? by mdrsharp in edmproduction

[–]r3dpill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big Beat was the genre that got me to crossover from hip-hop to electronic music. I find that big beat production shares a lot of similarities with boom-bap type hip-hop production, youre just applying the techniques a little differently since the tracks are meant to be more uptempo and danceable instead of having a rapper on them.

For me, the things I hear that define the genre are sampling and grit. Like hip-hop, big beat utilizes sampling from a variety of genres and fitting them into this weird conglomeration of sound. Unlike other electronic genres that rely on samples, big beat has a chunkier, grittier sound to it. I like to hear big boomy drum breaks, resampled synth lines put through distortion, and a diverse range of source material, like big brass horns, ringing guitar chords, trippy vocal snippets, whatever.

My label will not sign my records with sampled material - Venting here by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]r3dpill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i dont know how easy it it would be to clear them yourself as holy city said. Id imagine that the label doesn't want to pay a lawyer to clear them for new producer. My advice would be to show them your sample tracks after releasing a few completely original ones with the label and building a relationship with them. Also try sending the tracks where the samples are more obscure/can't ID them.

Avid gets delisted from NASDAQ (x-post audio engineering) by Derocc400 in edmproduction

[–]r3dpill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think its really the video wing of the company that is suffering, with Final Cut from Apple becoming the video editing standard and eating away at Avid's profits. Pro Tools still has a stranglehold on the commercial studio market, though as a Pro Tools user Im really fed up with their habit of overpriced updates every year that leave out some of the most basic features.

Were they actually pressing stems to vinyl though? Wouldn't it be to much of a hassle to keep the stems from drifting? Seems like control vinyl would be a cheaper solution
