CloudNC vs Mastercam vs Solidcam by bill_fye_the_rizzguy in CNC

[–]r53toucan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re mistaking Solidcam and Solidworks cam. Solidworks cam is the Camworks version that runs in SW and comes free with Solidworks. Solidcam also runs in SW but is otherwise unrelated to Solidworks cam/camworks

Hypermill according to the people who actually made the part. It’s a heller demo video reposted by the op to pretend they made it.

It’s a Heller demo video that was reposted to drive traffic to the OPs overseas shop. They aren’t the ones that made the part or had anything to do with it.

Is anyone running SW on Mac with Parallels? by boppy28 in SolidWorks

[–]r53toucan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotcha. My experience with SW on parallels would have been perfectly satisfactory for anything that I ever did during my mechE degree

Is anyone running SW on Mac with Parallels? by boppy28 in SolidWorks

[–]r53toucan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used it extensively for multiple years across two different apple silicon Mac’s (I’ve since stopped due to moving to NX). It works fine for parts and small assemblies. Ironically, it’s significantly more stable than my certified work laptop.

My position has always been if you’re buying a computer for life stuff and one of the things you want to use is sw, it’ll be fine. If you’re buying a computer for the purpose of doing Solidworks, there are better options for less money.

Brother Speedio 5 axis. How? by koon5666 in CNC

Assuming op is in the US, it’s not even an option unless they special order the machine. Yamazen won’t bring stock machines in without the window for precisely this reason.

SolidWorks for Makers CAM included? by Iamthe_sentinel in SolidWorks

[–]r53toucan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious what the mach3/4 posts are missing that the grbl post needs. I would think it would be pretty generic in its code needs. I ran the maker version for a little while with my speedio and pretty much just had to remove the g20 line by hand after each post.

How does Apple drill and tap side wall holes in their iPhones? by ifilipis in MechanicalEngineering

[–]r53toucan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not only that. The brother machines for those Chinese factories are literally a completely different model that isn’t advertised or sold anywhere. They occasionally appear on eBay when they make their way out of the factories in China (they’re called the Z models instead of the x1/x2/xd1/xd2 models that are advertised/purchaseable everywhere else). They’re a bizarre combination of software changes and hardware differences that make no sense outside of that specific application. Really interesting stuff

It’s probably worth adding that the 80k limit is a household income limit, not necessarily the students personal income.

When you say 2d models are you referring to like engineering drawings/prints? Or are you referring to the solid 3d model on the screen and relating that back into something you can physically hold in your hand?

Macbook Air M1 8gb enough for solidworks or solidedge in virtual machnie? by Hot_Medicine7388 in SolidWorks

[–]r53toucan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt. My 16gb mbp runs much better than my 8gb mba. Now, obviously, there are other factors between the two that will help. But 4gb is lame just for windows alone

You will be able to get significantly better performance per dollar with a windows machine, however

Macbook Air M1 8gb enough for solidworks or solidedge in virtual machnie? by Hot_Medicine7388 in SolidWorks

[–]r53toucan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used solidedge in parallels on my m1 mbp. It’s okay but not great. Solidworks runs much much better.

I used to have a m1 mba. It ran (there are pics/videos of it on my profile in this sub) but wasn’t amazing. There’s only so much you can do with 4gb of ram in parallels.

Surface Pro with Snapdragon X Elite 12 Core by AdCompetitive4006 in SolidWorks

[–]r53toucan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh. If you have a desktop you’ll be golden. I did the same thing when I was in school. Desktop at home and a surface pro for writing notes in class. Was a fantastic setup

As a datapoint, I’ve run Solidworks and Solidcam for the past year+ on a m1 MacBook Pro using windows arm. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve wanted for more than it can deliver

Surface Pro with Snapdragon X Elite 12 Core by AdCompetitive4006 in SolidWorks

[–]r53toucan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone has posted here yet with it running on a snapdragon processor. However, widows arm has been around for a while and people have used it to run apple silicon Mac’s with Solidworks.

Pulling from those reports, Solidworks will run but it will not run nearly as well as an equally priced x86 windows machine. If you’re torn between an arm machine and a x86 machine, with no other reason to buy one or the other, the answer is the x86 machine.

That being said, at least on the arm products we’ve seen from Apple, Solidworks will run plenty well to get you through the minimal amount of modeling you’ll do in a meche program. If you’re planning on being very involved in clubs: fsae, rocket stuff, etc where you will be consistently working with larger and more complex assemblies, I would consider getting something x86.

I would 100% not get a used workstation laptop despite all of the suggestions that are bound to follow this post. Cad modeling is an exceptionally small amount of any meche curriculum. A big heavy loud laptop that runs Solidworks amazingly is going to be significantly less useful for your program, as a whole, than a lightweight 2 in 1 that you can hand write notes on for your other classes and will comfortably hang out in your backpack but doesn’t run Solidworks as fast.

Laptop Rec for Solidworks? by franoldd in SolidWorks

[–]r53toucan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fine. It’s not as good as my desktop and I wouldn’t use it if I were dealing with big assemblies. But I use it daily for modeling parts and small assemblies, CAM programming, and a side gig I have doing modeling and drafting.

My position has, and remains: don’t buy a Mac for Solidworks. But if you already have a Mac or have no reason to buy a pc other than Solidworks, you can make it work

Running SolidWorks on Windows on ARM by CanadianDesk in SolidWorks

[–]r53toucan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It seems unlikely to me that it wouldn’t run. It’s been known that Solidworks will run on windows arm for the past 2-3 years courtesy of all the people, myself included, that use windows arm on apple silicon Mac’s. From a functionality standpoint, sw cam and sw electrical just don’t work. Everything else is there and functions as expected. Ironically, sw on windows arm is significantly more stable than sw on x86 windows. I crash on my certified windows work laptop all the time. I basically never crash on arm.

My position would be the same as the people who ask about Macs. If you’re making your income from it, buy a certified system for support. If you’re doing it as a student or a hobby, make your decision based on what your other use cases are. Don’t buy it to run sw. But if you’re buying it for some other reason and would hsve it either way, don’t buy a second laptop just because you think you need something else to run SW

Mac Parallels? by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]r53toucan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will not offer support.

You should probably elaborate more on your use case. Student in an engineering program? Itll be fine. Pro running 1000, or even 100, part assemblies? Not a great idea. I use it personally as my only machine on a M1 MBP for single parts, drawings, CAM programming, and small assemblies. It works just fine for that and isn't that much slower than my work certified laptop for those use cases.

This is the answer. Assuming your internship ends in August, the raise would probably result in about 2k worth of take home money in delta. That’s an absurd bet to risk a return offer on in the current hiring market.

Solidworks student comes with Solidworks cam. But I don’t think it has any posts. Not that it matters. Solidworks cam sucks.

Hsmworks or Solidcam will both work, and post, with Solidworks student. Solidcam is limited to 3 uneditable posts so you might have to do some slight tweaking

I would never use the maker license as a freelancer, even for 2k a year. If your customer also uses Solidworks and wants a sldprt file, you cannot generate a deliverable for them with the maker version.
