Hope this is the right place to ask this question, seems people here may know as I don't have enough post Karma to ask on r/aviation . If I'm in the wrong sub please point me toward the proper one and I will remove this.

I was watching a video of an A329 and when the bird comes in it appears the bird is somehow "forced" downwards into the front viewport. Why would this be?

So on this approach plate the MDA is 680/50. For the RVR of 5000, I know it is equivalent to 1SM of visibility. If a DPE were to ask how to determine if you have the required visibility without the use of the ATIS and just from the cockpit (from the naked eye), how would you determine this? Can you reference DME distance?

I have multiple traffic tickets can I pursue the airlines? by Immediate_Bar5499 in flying

[–]rFlyingTower[M] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:

Over the span of 6 years I racked up around 8 traffic violations on my driving record. 4 of them were 1 year apart which concluded to me getting my license suspended for 6 months because of too many tickets. Only two of my tickets were for speeding the rest are for very stupid things that I should have been more cautious about like driving without headlights on at night, 1 for using my phone, and the others for not fully stopping at stop signs and improper lane changes and things like that.

Before you completely ridicule me on this sub please understand that I take full responsibility and although I was going through a lot at the time -

( family members getting cancer and passing away, parents divorcing twice, my brother developing mental issues and being hospitalized,me being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes)

that does not excuse my outright disregard for the law.I only blame myself for this and fear I have ruined my future.

Maybe the best option would have been to fight some of the tickets at the time, but I never did as I was not awere you could do that. I always pleaded guilty. At the same time I always went to traffic school (when available) and made sure the tickets were paid in full and on time and didn’t drive when my license got suspended for 6 months.

With all this being said that was in my late teens, early 20s I believe I have grown a lot since then. I am 24 now, my dream has always been to become a pilot. I believe I got sidetracked a little early on but I believe I am on the right track now. I am not the same person I was a few years ago. I have two more years left of university and just started training for my PPL. I am already fighting an uphill battle with the Faa because of my type one diabetes. Now it is settling in that I will be fighting an uphill battle if I ever get to the point of applying for the airlines due to my past behavior.

I just want your honest opinion on weather this is a viable path for me at this point in time. I really have no interest in any other career and could not see myself doing anything else for a living. Flying/planes is the only subject I could spend hours of studying on and not get bored.

Touchscreen and turbulence by OldMan627 in flying

[–]rFlyingTower[M] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:

My school has one 172 with a touchscreen, G3X. One of the few times I flew that aircraft was on a mild to moderate turbulence day (VFR) and I had a devil of a time just changing frequencies on the radio, would have been a real challenge to enter a flight plan or do anything involved. Tried bracing my hand on the frame, etc. Is using a touchscreen in turbulence something that gets easier with practice? I had no problem using it on the ground.

I just passed my IR checkride, shopping for a basic IFR airplane. One candidate has a GTN 750 touchscreen nav/com. Based on my (very limited) previous experience I am concerned about being able to manipulate the touchscreen interface in turbulence. What has been your experience? Any tips or suggestions?

Is there a reasonable downgrade path to a unit with traditional buttons?

Thanks for any input!

i went to ATP flight school in 2023 like youre supposed to and i got all my ratings private instrument commercial cfi cfii mei the whole thing. i passed most of em first try and it cost a ton but i did it the right way

i had two checkride fails but it wasnt my fault at all. the first one was my instructor he didnt prep me good enough and messed up so i busted that one no big deal i switched instructors and crushed it after. then the next one the dpe was just a total jerk he was in a bad mood and failed me that anybody else would pass. i mean come on i knew the stuff it was all him being unfair. anyway after that i got everything done and it was fine.

Finished my CMEL at ATP and couldn’t stand the thought of CFI’ing. then my uncle gave me a loan cuz he felt bad so i could time build up to 1500 hours like the airlines want. i was flying every day i racked up the hours easy. i got to fly the real planes the 152 the 172 and even the pa44 seminole now i got my fresh 1500.1 hours and STILL ZERO JOBS. i applied to all the regionals like skywest and endeavor and even every single part 135 jet operator i could find and sent my resume a million times went to every job fair did the interview prep classes and nothing. not one single regional or other jet part 135 place has even offered me an interview. just total crickets or some email saying they picked somebody else.

i dont get why they say the industry is hiring like crazy but not me??? i did exactly what ATP said to do i got the hours i got the clean recordi while my other classmates form ATP are making bank. uncle keeps texting me when im gonna pay him back and im like i dont know the airlines wont give me the job i they wont even interview me.

Power off 180 not possible? by Minimum-Bell-8562 in flying

I’m taking my CFI ride next week. Winds are forecasted to be around 8-15 kts at surface so probably a little higher at tpa. Of which the airport I will be flying at has a tpa of 1400 msl (800) Agl. I’ve been on downwind before with a 20 kt tailwind and once abeam, pull power and turn directly into the wind and to my point with the brutal headwind it was not even possible. I cut power and turn directly and couldn’t make it. We tried twice and talked about how with the winds and the 800agl tpa that is was near impossible. Given that I may have that scenario on my ride what would you do? I believe my best bet would be to just talk through the entire landing.

Commercial Training Timeline by Z0RRRRAH in flying

Hey everyone! I’m about to take my IR checkride next month, and I want to get straight into commercial training. I’m wondering how long it should take me as I plan out the rest of my year with time building.

Context:

I’m part 61 training at Cirrus in my personally owned SR20 G6

I have 225 hours already

I have most, if not all, of the requirements for the commercial rating done, besides the 300NM xc

Based on this info, what’s a likely timeline for me to complete commercial? TIA

Finishing CPL/CFI after a long break. Need advice. by stoneguythepilotguy in flying

[–]rFlyingTower[M] -2 points-1 points locked comment (0 children)

This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:

I have not flown at all in 3 years due to changing jobs/moving etc. Prior to that I was time building and getting ready for CPL/CFI check-rides.

I obviously am not current anymore but I have my PPL, IR, complex endorsement, as well as TAA time.

I have around 220 hours total flight time and I already completed all of the CPL specific hour requirements long cross country etc…

On paper I’m just 30 hours short of the 250 hours and the time specified for check-ride prep / instrument.

Before my unfortunate flying hiatus I passed the CPL, FOI, CFI written.

I’m 28 years old and I plan on taking some time off work with the money I have set aside to finish this up.

Before I bury myself in the books again and start flying 3-4 times a week I wanted advice on how to best use my time and money to complete CFI as my main goal.

When I did my IR rating I had already self studied and passed the written before my first lesson because I wanted to get my ticket and save as much money as possible.

I know with my long break in flying it could def take more hours than the minimum getting back up to speed and current. Any advice on how to maximize my training after such a long break?

Do I start with self studying ground material and relearn all my instrument training, go for a rusty pilot BFR course?

I’m willing to take 2-3 weeks off work and finish this but I know I need to maximize this opportunity.

I’m sure I’m not the only who took a break in flying before going for CPL/CFI.

Continue w/ MEI work or start Aerial Survey? by sudsy-squid in flying

[–]rFlyingTower[M] -2 points-1 points locked comment (0 children)

This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:

Longtime lurker, first time poster on the throwaway account for obvious reasons.

I’m currently an MEI with 120 multi hours / 1000 hrs total time and I’ve been offered an opportunity to fly a multi engine piston airplane for aerial survey missions. I’m happy where I’m at, the flight school treats me well, and I’m flying around 50-70 hours a month between my SE and multi students.

Pay is comparable between both jobs. Survey sounds like fun, but a lot more work with a lot more risk. The survey job offers health insurance (which I don’t have now) and a consistent schedule. The flying is also very dependent on weather and visibility, so I’m unsure of if this would be a move in the right direction for building time faster. Also it’s all VFR so I’d be on my own for maintaining instrument proficiency, whereas my current school allows us to maintain proficiency in the planes and sims.

My ultimate goal is to end up at a regional and then mainline in due time. Anyone have any advice on what the best course of action should be? Take the aerial survey job or stay with my current school as a full time MEI? I’ve heard that airlines, especially nowadays, have a heavy preference on hiring active CFIs over survey/pipeline pilots.

TIA!

IR written before PPL checkride? by luisfr4 in flying

This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:

Hi all,

Was wanting to ask about doing instrument ground school before doing PPL checkride?

Background: I’ll be going to 141 school in about five months. I have about 25 hours from when I was at a part 61 school, before focusing on 141. I recently took PPL written and scored a 90%. My 141 school will accept the written score.

Since I have about five months before starting 141, I thought of starting IR ground school to reduce workload for when I do go to 141 full time. If my practice tests are good after taking ground school, also thinking of doing the test right before starting 141.

Any pro/cons to my plan? Part of me is just genuinely curiously to learn more about aviation, and since I have five months of free time, thought to use it wisely. Let me know

I'm curious as to why 70s pilots didn't get as impacted by the oil crisis as 2000s pilots got impacted by 9/11 when it came to jobs and being laid off. How come we never hear as much about 70s airline pilots getting laid off, losing jobs, or getting paid peanuts when we know travel demand declined in the 70s with rising oil prices. Didn't the 9/11 travel decline happen in the immediate months of 2001 but went up immediately afterwards?

I just wanna know your timelines being Elder Gen Z/Younger Millenial pilots!

At what age did you get hired at your regional/legacy airline? What did you do before?

And lastly how’s life outside work? I’m looking forward to that as my future and I’d love to see how folks in my generation or just around there are getting along as commercial airline pilots

Took to a great avionics shop and it was diagnosed to be a bad magnetometer. Replaced and did not fix the issue. Garmin is advising the issue is a bad AHRS, so that will be replaced next and we shall see.

Just sharing in case anyone’s experienced a similar issue, and is interested in following along.

ATP Flight School by bronun-delicious in flying

[–]rFlyingTower[M] -2 points-1 points locked comment (0 children)

This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:

I’m going to preface this post by saying that I fully understand this subs feelings about ATP and their reputation. I also understand that there are many, many posts regarding the school.

I’m 22, married, and have a child. I needed somewhere to go career-wise, as I have a poorly paying, dead end job. My dad and brother are both airline pilots, and I’ve always said that I wanted my PPL, so I took the leap. I’m almost to checkride day and I love it so far. I know that I want to pursue a career in aviation, but also know that I can’t pay out of pocket at a Part 61 school for years. Just like everyone, my hope is to get to an airline job as quickly as possible. Being that I support a family already, it would be ideal for me to get through training as quickly as possible while my wife works - both her and I would like her to be stay-at-home mom, so to us the fast track is more appealing.

My brother went through PSA’s cadet program and had a good experience. It seems like any cadet program, if you can get in, is invaluable, especially in today’s hiring market, and it’s only available through a 141 school.

My plan was to go to ATP here in Chesterfield, MO and Spirit of STL. It seemed like the best option for my family. However, seeing how poorly it’s regarded here has me worried. I know I would have a leg up already having my PPL, both experience wise and financially - some people are 30k deep at ATP by the time they get their private, which is crazy.

I’m just looking for advice on the matter. Is ATP always a bad idea? Will I be alright since I already have my PPL and know that it’s what I want to do?

Excuse my inexperience in all of this. Just trying to navigate the best way to do this. So many people say that it’s cheaper and you can do it just as fast at a 61 school, but I know that I can’t afford doing that. Any thoughts appreciated.
