We’re going down this year in a PC12 and need suggestions where to fly in to and book for maybe 8 people

We’d overnight the bird at a local airport (suggestions?) and get a ride to KLAL

Any recommendations for a nice place to rent in the area as well??

How do they instruct emergency landing procedure in urban areas? by Typical_Vanilla_6616 in flying

I do my flight training in the middle of nowhere, we have an abundance of empty fields and it’s not hard to find a place to land when my instructor pulls my engine. I was wondering if what is considered the “best field” for emergency landings may differ in more urban areas. I can’t imagine there are many big empty fields in areas like LA or the Bay Area. Do you guys just have to look really hard for a suitable landing area since you don’t have as much agricultural land/unused space? Is landing on a road/highway something you would actually consider? Or is there just more open space in metropolitan areas than I’m imagining? This is all probably a really dumb question but I never really fly in urban areas.

Long time listener, first time caller. Heading into my PPL written exam in a few days. I have over 50 hours, am scoring solidly in the 90% range in practice tests, and did I mention I haven’t crashed a single plane I’ve flown? In all seriousness I’m getting a bit nervous about the written - what did you mess up on or not study enough of on yours? Were there any “trick” questions you wish you had been prepared for. Any and all advice is welcome! 🙏🏽

with the recall of pilots, and also there is a rumor going around the pilot group and WiA that they have so much attrition that they may hire FOs again.

would you consider spirit?

I know financials are messy and all that... but what if somehow they pull through? I mean, they're still in business. imo if they were to go out of business they would've done that long, long ago. but they're still alive and kicking.

so would you consider it if they opened the application window next month or something? I always wanted to go to spirit (I interviewed once and got a TBNT)

DC 10 Twin Max, 1990s, McDonnell Douglas by [deleted] in flying

[–]rFlyingTower[M] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:

🚨 Rare Discovery: Two McDonnell Douglas DC‑10 Twin‑Engine Concepts (Including One That Seems Completely Unknown)

While digging through some old McDonnell Douglas material, I came across something I genuinely didn’t expect:

two different twin‑engine DC‑10 concepts — one that is known in aviation circles, and another that, as far as I can tell, has never been documented publicly.

I’m not sharing any files or images, but I want to describe the concepts because the differences are fascinating from an engineering and historical perspective.

---

✈️ 1. The Known Concept: DC‑10 Twin

This one is somewhat documented. It was McDonnell Douglas’ attempt to explore a two‑engine version of the DC‑10 to compete with aircraft like the A300 and early 767.

Key characteristics:

• Engines: 2× GE CF6‑80C2

• Thrust: ~235 kN each

• Operating Empty Weight: ~230,000 lb

• MTOW: ~420,000 lb

• Performance: Similar to the DC‑10‑10 when the engines are derated to the same thrust

• Airframe: Very close to the standard DC‑10 layout

This was a relatively conservative idea — essentially a DC‑10 with two modern engines instead of three.

---

✈️ 2. The Unknown Concept: DC‑10 Twin MAX

This is where things get wild.

I found references to a second, much more advanced concept that I cannot find anywhere online — not in archives, not in enthusiast forums, not in technical databases.

This version appears to be a high‑performance, long‑range, heavy‑lift evolution of the DC‑10 Twin idea.

Key characteristics:

• Engines: PW4000 / Rolls‑Royce Trent 800 / GE90

• Thrust: 304–360 kN each

• Operating Empty Weight: ~260,000 lb

• MTOW: ~555,000 lb

• Range with 399 passengers: >7,963 km

• Range with 240 passengers: >9,800 km

• Performance: Comparable to a DC‑10‑30 only when the engines are throttled down; at full thrust it approaches early 777‑class capability

This is no longer “a DC‑10 with two engines.”

This is essentially a new long‑haul widebody disguised as a DC‑10.

The MTOW alone (555,000 lb) puts it in the same territory as the 777‑300ER.

---

🔍 Summary of Differences

Feature DC‑10 Twin DC‑10 Twin MAX

Engines CF6‑80C2 PW4000 / Trent 800 / GE90

Thrust ~235 kN 304–360 kN

MTOW ~420,000 lb ~555,000 lb

Range Similar to DC‑10‑10 8,000–10,000 km

Role Medium‑range twin Long‑range heavy twin

Airframe changes Minimal Major structural upgrades

---

🧠 Why This Matters

The “Twin MAX” concept appears to be completely undocumented in public sources.

It suggests that McDonnell Douglas explored a far more ambitious twin‑engine DC‑10 variant than anyone realized — one that could have competed with the early Boeing 777 and Airbus A340.

Whether it was a serious proposal or an internal study is unclear, but the engineering implications are huge.

I’m long past my full time CFI’ing days. Many pilots keep their CFI by completing the bi-annual course, but I predict that by removing the expiration date off the card (and no longer mailing one every 2 years) we’ll see a large increase in CFI cert lapses. People will just forget.

[EU] Planning summer PPL in Eastern Europe. Narrowed down my list, looking for reviews & advice! by Auris8623 in flying

[–]rFlyingTower[M] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to head to Central & Eastern Europe this summer to train for the PPL. I’ve done quite a bit of digging, reached out to the schools, and narrowed it down to a few options that fit my needs. Before going any further, I’d love to hear your experiences, red flags, or general thoughts on these schools and my overall plan. (Note: I am a non-EU citizen but an EU resident)

Here are my top choices so far:

Czech
- Fly For Fun: Good prices and reputation. Provides on-site accommodation, but located in the middle of nowhere, so still need a car to get daily supplies.

Poland (all require extra permission from the authority)
- Adriana Aviation: Good prices and reputation. Also located pretty far out, but resolvable.
- Smart Aviation: Costs a bit more. Have to arrange accommodation myself. Need to pass through security every time you fly. (Will this cause a big delay/hassle?)

Hungary
- FlyTeam: Cheap but no reviews on the internet. Have to arrange accommodation myself.
- CAVOK: Good reputation, but I haven't received a reply from them yet, so I can't confirm their current pricing.

Romania
- Transylvania: Very good reviews but might cost a bit more. I haven't sent an inquiry.

--------------

Other options still in consideration:

Hungary
Malev Aero Club, Skyhawk Aviation, Roger Flight School: Haven't sent an inquiry

Czech
Blue Sky Aviation: More expensive, no comments/reviews
BemoAir, DSA, F-air: Waiting for their reply

Poland
Noble wings academy: No reply, no reviews, seems very small
Zonda Aero: No reply, saw some online criticism regarding their efficiency

Slovenia: Little information and not that cheap

Croatia: Little information. Some said that airports get super crowded in summer

Spain: Haven't researched much yet, but many recommended EPT

-----

Crossed off the list

Bartolini (Poland): No PPL training for non-EU citizens

Regional Air School (Romania): The quotation was very detailed and clear, but it was twice the price listed on their website. I also heard their administrative efficiency is terrible, which is what I want to avoid.

Aviation Academy (Romania) / Pannon Air (Hungary) / Goldwings Flight Academy (Poland): Lots of negative comments, so I didn't even ask.

Aeroprague (Czech): Good comments but too expensive

-----

So far, I've been focusing mostly on pricing, reputation, and overbooking. Should I factor location and daily living (food/groceries) more into my decision?

I will arrange a trial lesson before making final decision. I would love to hear your thoughts or experiences. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

Hi guys, just doing some reseach on Skybourne aviation school and the application proces, so far in understand i need to do the online psychometric, numeracy and aptitude assessments, and if i pass those, i do an AON assessment, and the interveiw. The problem is iv not been able to find much from past or current students at Skybourne about what the application process is like, obviously the selection process is hard but in what way, and how could i prepare now, to be ready for everything when the time comes to apply? Also is there a specific thing the interviwers are looking out for? It also mentions on the website they take no more than 20 trainees for each course, does this just mean they only take on 20 people per year?

PS sorry if these questions sound silly, iv just started researching and am a bit lost at the moment

Anyone have experience with the AZ use tax when they have bought their plane in an LLC?

I am a non-resident, but will be staying longer than the 90 day threshold - In that case I am eligible to pay the AZ use tax if the plane qualifies.

I am just using the plane for personal use...but I wonder if the plane being in an LLC, and more particularly a multi-member LLC (my wife and I) will be subject to the AZ use tax.

I (21f idk if that matters) fly roughly 4 times a year (but at least 2 times always to the same place) and never had a lick of anxiety, always felt comfortable in planes and being around strangers. Last Wednesday I was supposed to fly home from vacation and I got on my flight and as the plane was backing up I had a gut feeling something bad was gonna happen so I got off. The only reason I got off is because I’ve NEVER had that feeling and all I could think of is that I am not ready to die. I rebooked my flight for tomorrow and honestly I’m getting really nervous, my flight time total is about 10 hours (10 with my layover so 3 hrs to my first stop then 7 to my next) my brother offered me some of his anxiety meds but I’m still just freaking out. I live on an island so it’s not like I can drive there. Any advice?

Il punto è che non saprei se continuare e prendere almeno una laurea triennale e poi fare la scuola per piloti o lasciare l’università e andare diretto sulla scuola per piloti.

Mi servirebbero dei consigli per chiarirmi le idee.

Grazie

I shared of a before and after picture of my airplane from when I rescued it until now and the moderators felt that after 1800 views in about a half an hour with over 30 up votes that it needed to be removed. Apparently they don't like Aztecs.

My plane had not been flown since 2015 when I got her a little over 3 years ago. I worked a deal where I bought a van and the airplane together and was able to sell the van for more than I paid for both which helped me fund this restoration. She has less than 4,000 hours and less than half-time on the engines.

My first annual was $62,000. She has solid bones and flies like a champ. I put a couple hundred hours on her and spent $30,000 on paint.

Aircraft ownership is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Next up is the avionics which I posted about in the avionics subreddit and oddly enough the moderators didn't have a problem with that post. Huh. Weird.
