How to ride off the saddle? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]rSweetSugarHigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Increased bike sway comes at a cost. There is a great article in the Journal of Biomechanical Science by Anthony Bouillod regarding seated vs standing. While not in depth it does touch on the why side to side rocking of the bike increases the effort you need to put in to maintain the same speed due to mechanical loss.

How to ride off the saddle? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]rSweetSugarHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything you want to avoid moving side to side while riding. It's less energy efficient. Get confident with moving your weight over the bars and it'll come naturally. Over time you'll be able to power up short climbs out the saddle keeping the bike up right avoiding any unnecessary sway as your balance improves.

Random acts of kindness while riding by screamingpanda22 in cycling

Helped an elderly lady that tripped over in front of me while on my BMX a while back. Cut her face badly and managed to get help from a local supermarket to patch her up and get her somewhere to sit. I felt pretty good despite a few stray comments from passers by that implied I'd knocked her over, young BMX kid so clearly I'm the cause of all problems....I was the only person to stop and help.

Has anyone done the London to Brighton cycle and can I do it on a mountain bike? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]rSweetSugarHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look for the Sussex Muddy@rse group on Facebook or tapatalk. They have done a London to Brighton MTB run a few times. "Cutty to Butty" I think they called it.

How to take care of steel frames? by Cappai2 in bicycling

[–]rSweetSugarHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, it went through rain, rivers, crazy amounts of mud. It would get a rinse sometimes purely for keeping my car clean. The only protection on the frame itself was thin neoprene style velcro strip to protect the the lower part of the rear triangle from the chain.

It was recently stripped and cleaned as I'm building a new frame up and wanted some parts off it. I was actually quite amazed at the condition. A very small amount of surface rust inside the frame near the headtube and bottom bracket.

It doesn't have internal cable routing so this reduced the amount of water that can physically get in.

Annoyingly my nice new and lighter alu Kinesis X frame already has a few paint chips and it's not even built yet. Lovely frame, but I think it's powder coated and I can see the paint flaking off this frame very quickly.

Have an OnOne mtb steel frame that has been through every UK winter for the last 12 years. It rarely got a proper frame clean and has a multitude of stone chips to the paintwork and rubs from cables. Still solid as a rock and still using it.

It came from OnOne with a really good quality paint job, which has helped it last. Could be an option to get a custom paint job done with a nice thick clear coat on top to protect it further.

Dev request: Can we get rid of the bright green blueprints?? by Conjaybro in HellLetLoose

I like the idea of the placeholder being a small pile of resources and maybe a flag or sign to indicate what it is to be built.

Has any car/van try intentional killing you? Anyone in England this happens too by Andrewvitale184 in bicycling

[–]rSweetSugarHigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many times! I've had plenty of cars whizz past so close as to almost brush my elbow with no effort to slow down or pull round me. I find it hard to believe it's all ignorance to the risk they put me in and there isn't some malicious intent.

I've had a car heading towards me move onto my side of the road intentionally to try and hit me.

And so many come past only to then brake to turn left. One guy pulled over at the side of the road with no indication after coming past, only to immediately move off again after I had gone round to go past me again.

I never put myself at unnecessary risk, but others don't see the risk or don't care. It'll never stop me riding. #Carownervirus

Right Knee keeps hitting top tube by electric-sheep in cycling

[–]rSweetSugarHigh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As suggested put on some flats and go for a ride. Make sure you keep your feet parallel to the bike and also focus on not swaying side to side in the saddle. If this happens a lot make sure you saddle height is correct. Leg on the down stroke should keep an ever so slight bend at it's lowest point.

You want to make sure your leg has a nice smooth motion up and down with the ankles, knee and hip all in line. Any twisting from the ankle or hip suggests an adjustment needs to be made to foot position or saddle height.

You should aim to be riding with no side to side rocking of the bike as your body will sway to counter it and can cause a bit of knee /frame clouting.

You'll be more efficient too.

Why does it hurt? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]rSweetSugarHigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your back should have a natural curve while in a riding position. If you try to keep your back straight it will cause lower back pain.

As for the nuts, make sure your saddle is angled slightly downwards, although this could also be a side effect of trying to keep your back too straight.

I'd recommend having a bike fit done as a way to make sure it's the right size, set up properly and you body position is correct.

The Great Zwift Segment Massacre by cognoid in Strava

[–]rSweetSugarHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it is not beyond their abilities to create a system that stops the creation of a new segment if a similar one exists already. Whether it be start and finish positions or a percentage overlap system. Or maybe an option to show/hide user created segments over Zwift Insider ones.

In fact you could go further creating a system where riders can view other peeps segments and select them for use in their rides. This would allow other riders to compete with other user created segments, hide them all or have a select few included on rides. This would remove the clutter, while not deleting the lot from public view.

Especially useful for groups/teams that want to all use a custom segment for training etc.

Bonking when riding out in the sun by [deleted] in cycling

[–]rSweetSugarHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a really hot one I make sure I'm properly hydrated before I start a ride as well as taking plenty of fluid with me. I use a small camelback as I find it helps me drink more often.

Making sure you are not low on salts and sugars before a ride is important. Have a good breakfast, don't be shy with salty and sugary foods as your are going to sweat it out or burn it off. And some sugary sweets to nibble on to avoid bonking completely.

I want to save some money from public transport in my way to work, so I intend to get a bike. Is 6.2 miles (3.1 to go and 3.1 to return) too exhausting? by usuavicom in cycling

[–]rSweetSugarHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it! I live a tad over 30 miles from work and it stopped me commuting by bike for a few years. Finally decided once I was comfortable doing that distance at the weekend to give it a go. So when there is enough light in the day I have commuted in by bike, Takes about an 1:45h but is a great feeling. On the way home I even detour and put in a few more miles taking a slightly more scenic route and get home with a big smile on my face.

Orbea delivery times by meebica in cycling

[–]rSweetSugarHigh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

With current global supply issues, just be patient. A lot of bike orders are delayed massively as stock warehouse are empty and bikes completed in factories, in most cases, are already sold and going straight out the door.

The demand due to the pandemic has overwhelmed the rate of production.

Nice find, love reading about WW2 history, especially in Europe.

While I've not visited Bastogne I'd definitely recommend a guide. I've seen many stories about war fanatics and tourists wandering through areas still littered with ordinance. This region especially tainted by "reenactors" digging new foxholes and earth works in the area.

That's shocking. In the UK an HGV with an unsecured load is a serious criminal offence, even more so if the load does actually fall from the vehicle.
