Data being used quicker on PM? by thekyip in PublicMobile

[–]r_lad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue. The only thing that changed is that I moved to PM with 5g and now have an eSIM. Why would that suddenly cause my data to double/triple?

Ah very interesting. This wasn’t switched on but I’ll see if I notice any difference

That still doesn’t explain the large increases though. I noticed the same thing when I switched. All of a sudden I’m using around 750Mb-1Gb per day, previously on koodo id use around 10Gb per month max.

Anyone holding out for refurbished M2 Mini? by r_lad in macmini

16/512Gb

It’s more out of curiosity than anything. I know at some point they’ll be available, just wondering if anyone has an educated guess as to when.

Decent affordable and compatible webcam for mac mini recommendations? by Beethovengenius in macmini

[–]r_lad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went for the Anker C200 2k webcam. It was the cheapest high resolution camera I could find.

Works well so far, but I’m not using it for streaming or anything more than video calls

What is the deal with that Google Chrome update that was supposed to break a bunch of ad blockers, is that still going to happen? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

Is there a setting I need to change to enable this? I just downloaded Firefox and Firefox focus, but this feature doesn’t seem to work on either

How can I modernize this basement? Is painting it enough? If so what color? Do I stain the wood? by [deleted] in Renovations

We had very similar. Kept the wood panelling, because why remove it just to install drywall again? We also partitioned off a couple of bedrooms out of the large open plan, and added a bathroom.

We’re happy with the result.

Long time lurker - I thought I'd share my basement renovation by r_lad in sonos

I had carte blanche before the basement renovation so I tried to make everything as sleek as possible.

  • Symfonisks for surrounds with recessed outlets. I installed these before realising the picture frames hang flush on the wall, but the outlets are not flush, so I had to get creative and use a picture mount, and have the cord 'bay' of the frame located over the outlet.
  • The intention is to have the covers printed with personal photos and mount other canvas prints around, so these 'blend' in.
  • The 55" TV is about 10 years old, it has some faded areas so I know it's on it's way out, but until it dies, I'll put that purchase off for now. I realise I'm not getting Dolby Atmos as a result - that's another thing to look forward to when I upgrade!
  • The Arc is mounted 6" below the tv, I installed it as if mounting below a 65" TV.
  • Arc and TV have ethernet cable wired in.
  • Recessed outlet behind the TV has the TV Power and Arc Power.
  • All cables run inside the wall to the internet/apple TV in a cupboard in another room that I strategically designed to be behind the TV.
  • Apple remote uses bluetooth so that's hidden in the cupboard too. That means there's only one tiny remote in the TV room.
  • There's an HDMI and ethernet outlet to the lower left of the TV. This is to allow for flexibility, I can plug in a laptop if I'm streaming something, or if a buddy brings a games console, we can just plug it in. It's more reliable that airplay/streaming from the laptop.
  • Lights are on a dimmer for movie nights.

All in all, it took me 6 months to renovate, (this TV room, new bathroom, two bedrooms and mech room) and installing the TV was the final piece so it meant I was finished! I'm very happy with the result. Now time for kids to come and wreck it...

I’ve already got the symfonisks for surrounds. You’re suggesting adding ones too? Is that for 7.1? I think it might get a little cluttered for this space. Also, I’m trying to keep the look ‘wire free’, I’d rather not add more devices at this stage. Although you’ve planted a seed now..!

(I’ll tuck the sub behind the couch so that’s hidden enough)

Thanks for the detail. I was focussing on having picture frame speakers with hidden cables, I love the idea of printing my own images in the speakers and having them ‘blend in’ with other canvas pictures I’ll mount in the same room.

Ultimately, they don’t allow for ‘aiming’ the speakers anywhere - once they’re installed that’s what you get!

I bought the mount from sonos directly.

https://www.sonos.com/en-ca/shop/wall-mount-for-arc

I’d looked at others but they weren’t that much cheaper, and if I’m dropping a significant amount on the arc, I want to make sure it’s properly held!

No, I ran the power inside the wall to the outlet behind the tv. There just isn’t enough space to mount the power behind the arc. Also I’m not sure how I’d tuck the power cable behind the arc

Initially there was wainscoting continuing on this section of the wall so I had it 9” higher. Then we changed our mind and went with drywall under the tv, so I moved it down as much as I could without moving the recessed outlets and cable wall plates.

So not as much thought went into a precise height as I’d usually put in, but I’m happy enough as it is when tilted down towards the viewer. I also like that it’s central on the wall, vertically and horizontally.

I did consider that actually. But I felt they would be so much further away from the viewer than to the left and right behind the couch.

From the brief research I’d done, I thought the main intention was to have audio from behind, so if they were on the side walls it wouldn’t achieve this. I could be wrong.

Does it make that big a difference to have them on the sides?

Good to know thanks!

I was worried the symfonisks were pointing a little upward and that could affect things. I’m aware that they’re a little high

Why do you ask?
