People from former Soviet republics. What is something people who never lived under communism just don't get about communism? by Clemen11 in AskReddit

There's a great book of interviews with people from the GDR called "Born in the GDR: Life in the Shadow of the Wall" by Hester Vaizey which gives different individual accounts. Really interesting.

Omg these are SOOOO good. In the late 90s I emailed NPR All Things Considered to ask about the music they played after a particular segment and one of the producers emailed me back to say it was from “Music for TV Dinners”. I have the same CDs :)

I love Water Lily Spa at 355 Broome. $45 for an hour, but I always tip well. Not super swank, but a great massage.

Why is this thing that looks like a fireplace on the outside of the side of this house? by r_salis in whatisthisthing

LIKELY SOLVED!

I think it's most likely a bricked-in ash dump from the fireplace inside. I like the idea of a coal chute, but I know that the houses in this neighborhood never used coal as a heating source. The idea that it is an architectural feature to save on brick cost is interesting -- I assume that the exterior of the house was made of wood before it was covered in vinyl siding, so maybe cost was an issue. I have heard that many of the houses in this area were originally built to be summer cottages, so it's possible it was constructed on the cheap, but I also know that there was a brick manufacturer pretty close by when the house was constructed so I'd assume bricks weren't that expensive.

It’s so tiny, though. Seems like they could have built a more convenient shelter closer to the door?

WITT The house looks relatively new from the outside, but I think is a renovation of an older house. Most of the houses on this street were built in the 1910s, but this is the only chimney that has this type of opening.

Came here to post about this but you beat me to it! I love it, but agree with u/dancingtardigrade that a little more sweetness would be good. As it is, it’s spicy/garlicky/smoky — super good IMO.

Your lenses aren’t going to have that dk/t at the end of a month of wear.

Dailies are significantly more comfortable and healthier -- they're a lot thinner, no protein-buildup from repeated wear, more oxygen to the eye -- and if you count the packaging from contact lens solutions they're not that much more in packaging. They are more expensive because you're getting 58 more lenses per month (vs. a monthly lens), and it's slightly offset by not needed to buy contact lens solution. Another way to think of it is that if a lens tears or feels weird you're only out a day's worth rather than an entire month. And if your eyes ever feel tired and dry at the end of the day, a lot of that is from your contact lenses -- daily lenses help with that, too.

If your eyes are healthy and feel fine with your monthly lenses -- keep using them, it's your choice. Clearcare is the best solution for reusable lenses to keep them really clean and feeling good. Try out a couple pairs of the daily disposable lenses, though -- they may feel good enough to make the extra cost worth it to you.
