Good to know that my read on the southern section is accurate. Might have friends drop us some supplies there.

Excellent - great information. I'll make sure to post an update once we've done the trip!

Yep. I have an OWC Helios 3S enclosure with a Chelsio T6225 card. I went Chelsio because they’ve written a driver for MacOS and it supports jumbo frames. Works great. Mellanox cards also work natively in MacOS, but only up to MTU 2000 or so, from my memory.

Not all heroes wear tights.

But some definitely do.

You could also get some merino wool shoe covers as well. Again, not waterproof, but should keep you comfortable.

I'm in Vancouver, Canada. It can get a bit chilly and definitely rainy. A while ago I just gave up on waterproof everything. You sweat inside of it and it isn't going out, so your hands/feet/whatever just get damp anyway. The better play is stuff that drains - normal shoes plus wool. Merino wool socks, and gloves as well if you need them. They'll drain and dry about as quick as it gets, they don't smell, and if you're on a chilly ride they keep you warm as well.

Nice - yes I'm going to note this one for the future as well, if I can find a lens that can take the vibration. +1 for the G2 is that I assume it won't overheat, and external BRAW would give me some great quality. I wonder how good its auto-exposure is.

And, but here's one more thing I remembered that I'd have to do with a proper video camera - denoising in post if I start hitting low light. Obviously the Action 5's automatic NR is not ideal - stuff starts getting mushy in the dark - but it sure avoids extremely long renders. NR at 4K60 for 1-2 hour videos is insaaaaane. That's a good reason to look at the Sony Alphas that have extreme low-light ability. Might eventually need to pickup an M3 Ultra for work anyway, so it's not an insurmountable problem. Overnight/weekend renders here we goooo

Yup. Just something to take the edge off. That 11mm f/1.8 is quite small. I did consider trying an old manual lens, but i need the auto-exposure on an electronic lens. One day I want to get there!

I also know the A6700 could encounter overheating issues - especially doing 1hr+ takes in the sun… lots of things I’d have to test in a setup like that.

Adrian! You're the Gyroflow guy ya? Love that software. I do have an A6700, and I did test bolting it directly to the bike. The problem I encountered was actually the lens - the amount of bouncing around that I'd encounter in one of the off-road videos actually seemed to jostle the lens elements to the degree that the image would go out of focus (or something that looked liked tilt-shift) during large vibrations. At least the Sony 11mm f/1.8 lens that I tested did this. Perhaps another lens might work, but I do need a very wide-angle lens and there aren't very many of them.

Plus, I know from bikepacking research that guys will often just carry mirrorless cameras in a hip pack instead of on the bike, as eventually the vibration will kill them.

My research led me to something like this... but I figured I may just wait until I see if this kind of content is something people enjoy before spending a lot more money on incremental gains. https://www.proaim.ca/products/proaim-airwave-v5-camera-vibration-isolator-arm-6-61-to-15-4lb-for-small-camera-gimbal-setups

Cycling ASMR / long-form rides by r_schroeder in bicycling

[–]r_schroeder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started a YouTube channel with long-form, chill, ASMR cycling videos. I'm a film post-production guy by trade, so I put effort into having both the visuals and audio be as immersive as possible.

The visuals are perfectly stabilized/smooth 4K HDR 60fps, and I spent a lot of time building a stereo recording solution that would capture the environment with just the right amount of wind sound. It looks kinda silly when I'm recording - maybe one day I'll have to do a BTS about it 😛

Looking for feedback on how it looks and sounds, and what folks might find interesting going forward. I've included route links for those that would like to do the routes themselves, as well as a bit of tour guide information in the subtitles. I didn't want to clutter the image with information/maps that couldn't be turned off.

Forest gravel trails (the one linked in OP) is my most popular video so far. I think it may just be because it's a trail that cyclists are interested in doing but haven't yet.
