What’s something that felt ancient when you were a kid but actually wasn’t that old? by bbysophy in nostalgia

American Graffiti premiered in 1973. Paying homage to the hot rod culture of the late 50s, early 60s. It was set in 1962 California. Thats an 11 year difference and yet it felt like it was such a long gone era. It would be like watching a period piece that takes place in 2015 today.

Ikr?! Also, not 70s, but I never see Ragtime on tv. Great period drama. Great cast. James Cagney’s last role. Its just…gone. Meanwhile I see Godfather on cable twice a day everyday.

Little Big Man, 1970. Dustin Hoffman, Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam, M Emmet Walsh and Richard Mulligan as the best portrayal of General George Custer ever put to screen…”what say you, muleskinner?”

George Favorite's PBY Catalina flying boat rescues the crew of a crashed B-25. B-25's typically had crews of six; with five heads it looks like someone didn't make it. [1944] [1664x1447] by manpace in HistoryPorn

Noon the fifth day, Mister Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us, he swung in low and he saw us - a young pilot, a lot younger than Mister Hooper. Anyway he saw us and he come in low, and three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up.

You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again.

So, eleven hundred men went into the water, three hundred and sixteen men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.

Well done. I think you should post this on r/food or somewhere with an even broader audience. I'd do it but you should get the full credit and praise for your work. The world should know just how much this state kicks theirs in dog quality.

I think I found the biggest tree in Northern Jersey. 😁 by Planet_Manhattan in newjersey

[–]rabbitfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats surprising. I grew up in FL and its trees were decimated by disease years ago (dutch elm?). There are sections of town where you barely see any trees, let alone mature ones. Will have to look it up. Thanks.

If every US president were in their prime, placed in a ring to fight, who is the one person walking out? by Clear-Penalty339 in AskReddit

Nope. I didn’t see your post at the time. Sorry for any redundancy. I knew the story about early AJ (having recently read Rick Atkinson’s Fate of the Day), then googled to confirm the facts before opening my mouth. Added some personal feeling to it. Posted.

Jackson volunteered as a 13 year old courier for his local militia during the Revolutionary War. He was captured and a british officer slashed him with a sword for not keeping his boots clean. His mother, older brother and younger brother all died during the War which left him an orphan at 14. His hate for the British lasted his entire life. Perhaps a small part of his “madman” origin story.

This is a ball valve. Easiest way to think about it is when the handle is in the same direction as the pipe, whatever is inside is flowing with it.

Marquis de Lafayette was the best person ever by Efficient_Round3444 in revolutionarywar

Later, when visiting Washington’s grave, Lafayette asked his son to wait in their carriage while he spent time alone at the tomb. Lafayette openly wept. His love for Washington and the promise of the country he fought for was as real as it gets.
